Territorially Stratified Modeling for Sustainable Management of Free-Roaming Cat Populations in Spain: A National Approach to Urban and Rural Environmental Planning.

This study presents the scientific and methodological foundation of Spain's first national framework for the ethical management of community cat populations: the Action Plan for the Management of Community Cat Colonies (PACF), launched in 2025 under the mandate of Law 7/2023. This pioneering legislation introduces a standardized, nationwide obligation for trap-neuter-return (TNR)-based management of free-roaming cats, defined as animals living freely, territorially attached, and with limited socialization toward humans. The PACF aims to support municipalities in implementing this mandate throu

Toxic aluminium and heavy metals in groundwater of middle Russia: health risk assessment.

Two approaches are distinguished in modern ecological monitoring. The first one is physicochemical analysis of environmental objects with respect to maximum allowable concentrations (MACs) of chemical substances, which is performed by standards methods in accordance with state regulations. The second approach (biological monitoring) is based on the methodology of biotesting and bio indication. The task of this work is to create biotests for estimation of Al and other metals toxicity in ground water and to compare these results with physicochemical analysis dates. Risk assessment for heavy meta

Diel cycles in calcite production and dissolution in a eutrophic basin.

Calcite production is understood largely as a longer-term phenomenon (e.g., seasonal whitings) that can occur in hardwater lakes, and is significant ecologically because it can slow the rate of eutrophication by reducing, through adsorption, the availability of nutrients to primary producers. In this study we show that rapid changes in concentration of dissolved CO2 by photosynthesis and respiration within a eutrophic basin generated strong day-to-night cycles in calcite production and dissolution. Diel cycles in calcite production and dissolution were large enough that they could drive second

A hybrid water quality prediction model based on variational mode decomposition and bidirectional gated recursive unit.

Water quality predicted accuracy is beneficial to river ecological management and water pollution prevention. Owing to water quality data has the characteristics of nonlinearity and instability, it is difficult to predict the change of water quality. This paper proposes a hybrid water quality prediction model based on variational mode decomposition optimized by the sparrow search algorithm (SSA-VMD) and bidirectional gated recursive unit (BiGRU). First, the sparrow search algorithm selects fuzzy entropy (FE) as the fitness function to optimize the two parameters of VMD, which improves the adap

Optimizing lakeside buffers and extending ecological redlines to key rivers: A multi-scale buffer and causal identification for diagnosing water quality drivers in a plateau lake, China.

Elucidating the spatiotemporal evolution of water quality and its driving mechanisms is essential for the sustainable management of basin water resources in plateau lakes. Taking Dianchi Lake-a typical plateau lake in the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, China-as the study area, monthly water quality data from 10 monitoring sites (2001-2019) were analyzed. A single-factor assessment combined with an optimized Water Quality Index (WQI) was used to characterize spatiotemporal variability. To systematically investigate the complex driving mechanisms involving natural (vegetation, hydrology, climate) and a

Electrodermal activity in bipolar disorder: Differences between mood episodes and clinical remission using a wearable device in a real-world clinical setting.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) lacks objective measures for illness activity and treatment response. Electrodermal activity (EDA) is a quantitative measure of autonomic function, which is altered in manic and depressive episodes. We aimed to explore differences in EDA (1) inter-individually: between patients with BD on acute mood episodes, euthymic states and healthy controls (HC), and (2) intra-individually: longitudinally within patients during acute mood episodes of BD and after clinical remission. METHODS: A longitudinal observational study. EDA was recorded using a research-grade wear

Local extinction of a parasite of Magellanic penguins? The effect of a warming hotspot on a 'cold' trematode.

It is often postulated that natural systems are expected to suffer an increasing risk of infectious disease outbreaks as climate change accelerates. In the northern Argentine Sea, the rise of ocean temperature has produced a tropicalization of demersal megafauna since 2013. This rapidly warming hotspot provides an excellent model to test whether fish parasites have increased, declined, or remained stable in the region. Cardiocephaloides physalis a parasite of penguins Spheniscus magellanicus as adult and suspected to parasitize anchovies Engraulis anchoita as larvae is here used to compare the

Magnetic solid-phase extraction for simultaneous enrichment of five types 20 antibiotics based on sulfonic acid-modified hierarchical porous covalent organic framework materials.

Monitoring antibiotic residues in environmental waters is essential for ecological‑risk assessment and public‑health protection. However, simultaneous enrichment of multiple classes of antibiotics is hindered by their distinct physicochemical features, including varied molecular sizes, surface charges and functional groups. In this work, density‑functional‑theory (DFT) calculations guided the rational ligand‑structure design of sulfonic‑acid‑functionalized covalent organic frameworks. The magnetic composite Fe₃O₄@ETTBC‑BD‑SO₃H was synthesized, fully characterized, and employed for magnetic sol

Disruption of gonadal steroidogenesis and reproductive function in Gambusia affinis after chronic exposure to environmentally relevant and sublethal concentrations of carbamazepine.

Pharmaceutical contaminants are increasingly recognized as critical pollutants in aquatic ecosystems, with antiepileptic drugs such as carbamazepine (CBZ) frequently detected at environmentally relevant concentrations. This study evaluated the reproductive and endocrine-disrupting effects of CBZ in male and female Gambusia affinis. Fish were exposed to environmentally relevant (13 ng L-1) and sublethal concentrations (2.4 and 4.8 mg L-1) for 60 days. Reproductive indices, including gonadosomatic index, sperm quality parameters, fecundity, oocyte diameter, and histopathology, were assessed alon

Finding beaked whales in the Foz do Amazonas basin: Visual and acoustic records of a deep diving cetacean.

Beaked whales, deep-diving cetaceans from the family Ziphiidae, exhibit cryptic behaviors, and data on these species in Brazilian waters are limited to strandings and isolated sightings. This study characterizes the occurrence and acoustic behavior of beaked whales in the Foz do Amazonas Basin using combined visual and passive acoustic monitoring along the Brazilian Equatorial Margin. Audio files were analyzed to identify clicks with frequency-modulated pulses, a diagnostic characteristic of beaked whales. The PAMpal package in R was used to calculate acoustic parameters, including peak freque

Understanding the diversity in catabolic potential of microorganisms for the development of bioremediation strategies.

Molecular ecological approaches have detected diverse microorganisms that occur in response to pollution and bioremediation; however, most of these organisms have not been isolated, and their physiological traits are poorly understood. One important objective in current bioremediation studies would therefore be an assessment of the physiology and functions of the diverse microbial population at a polluted site. Among the parameters relating to the diversity of the microbial catabolic potential, e.g., substrate specificity, inducer specificity, number of catabolic routes and kinetics of catabol

Climate and tree seed production predict the abundance of the European Lyme disease vector over a 15-year period.

BACKGROUND: To predict the risk of tick-borne disease, it is critical to understand the ecological factors that determine the abundance of ticks. In Europe, the sheep tick (Ixodes ricinus) transmits a number of important diseases including Lyme borreliosis. The aim of this long-term study was to determine the abiotic and biotic factors driving the annual abundance of I. ricinus at a location in Switzerland where Lyme borreliosis is endemic. METHODS: Over a 15-year period (2004 to 2018), we monitored the abundance of I. ricinus ticks on a monthly basis at three different elevations on Chaumont

A Sustainable Natural-Rubber IoT Smart Insole for Remote Body-Load Monitoring: An Observational Gait Comparison in Flexible Flatfoot.

Flexible flatfoot (pes planus) alters lower-limb biomechanics and plantar-pressure distribution, raising the risk of pain and injury. Laboratory gait analysis with optical motion capture and force plates is the reference standard but is costly, space-constrained, and ecologically limited. We present the design, fabrication, and validation of a low-cost, sustainable smart insole for Internet-of-Things (IoT) remote body-load monitoring. The device pairs a dual-layer natural-rubber body-a silica-filled sponge-rubber upper for comfort and a carbon-black-reinforced solid outsole for durability-with
