Economic costs attributable to modifiable risk factors: an analysis of 24 million urban residents in China.

BACKGROUND: Estimating the economic burden of modifiable risk factors is crucial for allocating scarce healthcare resources to improve population health. We quantified the economic burden attributable to modifiable risk factors in an urban area of China. METHODS: Our Shanghai Municipal Health Commission dataset covered 2.2 million inpatient admissions for adults (age ≥ 20) in public and private hospitals in 2015 (1,327,187 admissions) and 2020 (837,482 admissions). We used a prevalence-based cost-of-illness approach by applying population attributable fraction (PAF) estimates for each modifia

Socio-economic conditions and other anthropogenic factors influencing tick-borne encephalitis incidence in the Czech Republic.

Laboratory confirmed cases of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) have been reported in the Czech Republic since 1971. Peaks of incidence occurred at 2 to 5-year intervals. The incidence in the eighties was generally lower than in seventies. In the nineties there was a sharp increase in incidence that peaked in 1995 (7.2/100,000). TBE cases occur from April to November with maximum incidence in July. During the last decade the second peak of incidence occurred in most years in September and/or October. In the last decade, an extension of the TBE season towards the spring and autumn periods has been

The influence of socio-economic factors on Helicobacter pylori infection rates of students in rural Zambia.

OBJECTIVES: Although prevalence of disease in sub-Saharan Africa is often quite high and attracts much research, relatively little is known about less critical maladies. We examined Helicobacter pylori infected students in rural Zambia. We attempted to determine if any socio-economic or co-occurring diseases were correlated to H. pylori infection. Understanding the context in which H. pylori infections occur may increase our understanding of this organism. DESIGN: We conducted a screening survey with diagnostic tests of primary and secondary school students to determine rates of H. pylori inf

Do socio-economic risk factors predict the incidence and maintenance of psychiatric disorder in primary care?

In a prospective cohort study of consecutive primary care attenders in south London, the estimated prevalence of non-psychotic psychiatric disorder was 45.6%, using the Revised Clinical Interview Schedule (CIS-R). The estimated 12-month incidence rate was 15.7%. Extremely high stability was found in CIS-R scores over 12 months (r = 0.65) and 68.8% of cases at baseline were also cases 12 months later. A clear difference emerged in the types of risk factor which were associated with the incidence and maintenance of disorder in the study population: while socio-economic variables, especially low

Radiographic evaluation, risk factors, and socio-economic impact of metapodial and phalangeal lameness in dairy cows.

INTRODUCTION: Lameness is a major welfare and economic concern in the dairy industry, yet lesions of the metapodial (canon bones) and phalanges remain relatively under-recognized compared with claw horn disorders. This study investigated the prevalence, radiographic characteristics, risk factors, and socio-economic impact of metapodial and phalangeal lameness in dairy cows. METHODS: Over 12 months, a cross-sectional study was conducted on 1,050 Holstein-Friesian cows from three commercial farms with different flooring systems: concrete (n = 300), earthen (n = 350), and sand (n = 400). Impact of natural and socio-economic factors on varicella incidence in children in Shanghai, 2013-2022.

BACKGROUND: Since varicella is already known to be a globally distributed disease, the focus should be more on its transmissibility or disease burden. The incidence of varicella is affected by natural and socio-economic factors. However, it is unclear how these factors synergetically impact the dynamics of varicella transmission and control. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of varicella cases in children aged 0-17 years from 2013 to 2022 in Jiading District, Shanghai, China. First, we evaluated demographic characteristics, epidemiological trends of varicella. And then, we explor

Socio-economic factors associated with open defecation among agricultural households: a cross-sectional study in Haiti.

BACKGROUND: Open defecation (OD) is recognised as an important public health challenge in low-income and middle-income countries. Although agriculture is the main occupation in these countries, few if any study on OD has focused on agricultural households. In order to enhance the prevention of OD and contribute to a better understanding of this health-threatening behaviour, this paper analyses the socio-economic factors associated with OD practice among agricultural households in Haiti. METHODS: The study used primary data from 1269 households selected in 5 out of 10 geographic departments of

Economic vulnerability, violence, and sexual risk factors for HIV among female sex workers in Tijuana, Mexico.

Economic vulnerability is often reported to underlie involvement in sex work among female sex workers (FSW), but may also create urgency in women's work, limiting women's negotiating power with clients and in turn, increasing their vulnerability for violence and HIV. This study assessed economic vulnerability in relation to violence and sexual risk behaviors for HIV among a sample of FSW in Tijuana, Mexico. FSW at least 18 years of age were recruited through venue-based sampling for a survey (n = 228) and in-depth interviews (n = 50) to investigate HIV risk factors in this region. Using crude

Evaluation of biological and socio-economic factors related to persistence of African swine fever in Sardinia.

Despite the implementation of several eradication programmes, African swine fever (ASF), a viral disease in pigs caused by a DNA virus (ASFV), has been present in Sardinia (Italy) since 1978. Several studies have been carried out on the epidemiology of ASF in Sardinia, aimed at attaining a better understanding of the role of the risk factors related to ASFV persistence, but those studies did not address the social aspects involved. This work sought to bridge this gap, identifying the main social risk factors associated with ASF persistence. With this aim, this study takes into account not only

Socio-economic factors in the differential upsurge of tick-borne encephalitis in Central and Eastern Europe.

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), the most serious widespread vector-borne disease of humans in Europe, increased from 2- to 30-fold in many Central and Eastern European countries from 1992 to 1993, coinciding with independence from Soviet rule. Unemployment and low income have been shown in Latvia to be statistically associated with high-risk behaviour involving harvest of wild foods from tick-infested forests, and also with not being vaccinated against TBE. Archival data for 1970--2005 record major changes in the agricultural and industrial sectors, and consequent changes in the abiotic and bio
