Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in e-waste dust.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been used in many applications, including electronic products, but little is known about the presence of PFAS in e-waste facilities, especially in North America. In this study, we investigated 87 legacy and novel PFAS in indoor dust samples (n = 19) from two Canadian e-waste dismantling facilities. PFAS were detected in all samples in the range of 364-6090 ng g-1 for Σ64PFAS with a median of 1150 ng g-1. Polyfluoroalkyl phosphate esters (PAPs) were generally the most abundant group of compounds detected and ultrashort PFAS were detected in dust f

PBDEs and dechlorane plus contamination in community e-waste recycling: Environmental and health implications in Northeastern Thailand.

Electronic waste (e-waste) poses significant environmental and health risks in Thailand due to both domestic production and international imports. A notable portion of this waste is processed in small-scale, community-based workshops, often located in poorer regions, where safety regulations are improperly enforced or entirely ignored. This study focuses on the Kalasin province in Northern Thailand, a region with numerous such workshops, where no comprehensive analysis of exposure to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and dechlorane plus (DP) has been conducted. The study's objective was t

A facile crush-and-sieve treatment for recycling end-of-life photovoltaics.

The shift towards renewable energy mix has resulted in an exponential growth of the photovoltaic (PV) industry over the past few decades. Parallelly, new recycling technology developments are required to address the incoming volume of waste as they gradually approach their end-of-life (EoL) to realize the concept of a circular economy. Typical recycling processes involve high-temperature burning for separation and release of the PV cells for metal recovery processes. However, this thermal process generates gaseous by-products that cause serious health and environmental issues. Eschewing the ne

Facile and Cost-Effective Approach for Copper Recovery from Waste Printed Circuit Boards via a Sequential Mechanochemical/Leaching/Recrystallization Process.

The recovery of copper (Cu0) from waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) is a great challenge as a result of its heterogeneous structural properties, with a mixture of metals, epoxy resin, and fiberglass. In this study, a three-step sequential process, including mechanochemical processing, water leaching, and recrystallization, for Cu0 recovery from WPCB powder is reported. Potassium persulfate (K2S2O8), instead of acid/alkali reagents, was employed as the sole reagent in the cupric sulfate (CuSO4) regeneration process. Complete oxidation of Cu0 in the WPCBs to copper oxide (CuO) and CuSO4 was f

Removal of nickel and cadmium from battery waste by a chemical method using ferric sulphate.

The removal of nickel (Ni) and cadmium (Cd) from spent batteries was studied by the chemical method. A novel leaching system using ferric sulphate hydrate was introduced to dissolve heavy metals in batteries. Ni-Cd batteries are classified as hazardous waste because Ni and Cd are suspected carcinogens. More efficient technologies are required to recover metals from spent batteries to minimize capital outlay, environmental impact and to respond to increased demand. The results obtained demonstrate that optimal conditions, including pH, concentration of ferric sulphate, shaking speed and tempera

Gold Recovery from E-Waste by Food-Waste Amyloid Aerogels.

Demand for gold recovery from e-waste grows steadily due to its pervasive use in the most diverse technical applications. Current methods of gold recovery are resource-intensive, necessitating the development of more efficient extraction materials. This study explores protein amyloid nanofibrils (AF) derived from whey, a dairy industry side-stream, as a novel adsorbent for gold recovery from e-waste. To do so, AF aerogels are prepared and assessed against gold adsorption capacity and selectivity over other metals present in waste electrical and electronic equipment (e-waste). The results demon

Paper waste and carbon emissions from oral contraceptive leaflets.

Oral contraceptives (OC) are the most used form of contraception among women in the U.S. and Europe. Like other medications, their packaging must include patient information leaflets. This study quantifies the environmental impact of paper waste generated by these leaflets. We conducted an observational analysis, measuring the weight of leaflets, pills, and packaging components across various OC brands. Significant variations in leaflet weights were observed. On average, leaflets accounted for 55% of the package weight, while pills and blister dispensers represented only 32%. The mean weight o

Origins and carriers of Sb, As, Cd, Cl, Cr, Co, Pb, Hg, and Ni in mixed solid waste - A literature-based evaluation.

Antimony, arsenic, cadmium, chlorine, chromium, cobalt, lead, mercury, nickel and their compounds are commonly used in the industrial production of various goods. At the end of the product life cycle, these elements enter the waste system as constituents of the products. Mixed municipal and commercial wastes are landfilled, biologically treated, incinerated, and/or processed in mechanical treatment plants to yield solid recovered fuel (SRF). In all these cases, inorganic contaminants that are present in the input waste material play a significant role. In mechanical waste treatment, materials

Unraveling synergistic control in green Leaching: A double exponential kinetic model for efficient and sustainable indium recovery from E-waste using deep eutectic solvents.

The rapid development of the electronics industry caused an exponential increase in waste liquid crystal displays (LCDs). Waste LCDs release indium tin oxide (ITO, In2O3·SnO2), which is cytotoxic and poses a significant burden on the environment. Deep eutectic solvents, characterized by their high saturated vapor pressure and tunable composition, were regarded as sustainable green solvents and could serve as efficient and environmentally friendly leaching agents for ITO. This study systematically investigated the leaching mechanism of indium tin oxide in a specific DES (oxalic acid dihydrate:

Exhaust constituent emission factors of printed circuit board pyrolysis processes and its exhaust control.

The printed circuit board (PCB) is an important part of electrical and electronic equipment, and its disposal and the recovery of useful materials from waste PCBs (WPCBs) are key issues for waste electrical and electronic equipment. Waste PCB compositions and their pyrolysis characteristics were analyzed in this study. In addition, the volatile organic compound (VOC) exhaust was controlled by an iron-impregnated alumina oxide catalyst. Results indicated that carbon and oxygen were the dominant components (hundreds mg/g) of the raw materials, and other elements such as nitrogen, bromine, and co

Human exposure to BTEX emitted from a typical e-waste recycling industrial park: External and internal exposure levels, sources, and probabilistic risk implications.

Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) can be released during extensive activities associated with the disposal of electronic waste (e-waste), which might pose deleterious health effects on workers. In this study, pollution profiles of BTEX in air and their urinary excretive profiles in occupational workers were investigated in a typical e-waste recycling industrial park. The results showed that the workers in the park were generally exposed to high levels of BTEX. The median levels of urinary metabolites were approximately 6-orders of magnitude higher than those of unmetabolized BT

Gold biorecovery from e-waste: An improved strategy through spent medium leaching with pH modification.

Rapid technological advancement and relatively short life time of electronic goods have resulted in an alarming growth rate of electronic waste which often contains significant quantities of toxic and precious metals. Compared to conventional recovery methods, bioleaching is an environmentally friendly process for metal extraction. Gold was bioleached from electronic scrap materials (ESM) via gold-cyanide complexation using cyanide produced from pure and mixed cultures of cyanogenic bacteria Chromobacterium violaceum, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Pseudomonas fluorescens. As ESM was toxic to the

Women, e-waste, and technological solutions to climate change.

In this paper, we argue that a crossover class of climate change solutions (which we term "technological solutions") may disproportionately and adversely impact some populations over others. We begin by situating our discussion in the wider climate discourse, particularly with regard to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the Basel Convention. We then suggest that many of the most attractive technological solutions to climate change, such as solar energy and electric car batteries, will likely add to the rapidly growing stream of electronic waste ("e-waste"). This e-waste may have nega

Human exposure to PBDEs in e-waste areas: A review.

Polybrominated biphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are commonly added to electronic products for flame-retardation effects, and are attracting more and more attentions due to their potential toxicity, durability and bioaccumulation. This study conducts a sysmtematic review to understand the human exposure to PBDEs from e-waste recycling, especially exploring the exposure pathways and human burden of PBDEs as well as investigating the temporal trend of PBDEs exposure worldwide. The results show that the particular foods (contaminated fish, poultry, meat and breast milk) ingestion, indoor dust ingestion and

Atmospheric occurrences of nitrated and hydroxylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from typical e-waste dismantling sites.

Primitive electronic waste (e-waste) dismantling activities have been shown to be an important emissions source for a variety of toxic organic compounds, including carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Previous studies have found that some nitrated PAHs (NPAHs) are more toxic than their parent PAHs, however, little attention has been paid to the formation of PAH derivatives during e-waste processing and there is a lack of comprehensive data from field observations. In this study, the spatial distribution, temporal trends and atmospheric fate of NPAHs and hydroxylated PAHs (OH-P

Testing the existence of waste Kuznets curve hypothesis in 45 emerging economies: Evidence from an e-waste panel data survey.

This study examines the Waste Kuznets Curve (WKC) hypothesis by integrating it with the Tapio decoupling model to explore the relationship between economic development and e-waste imports in 45 emerging economies from 2002 to 2022. The empirical results show that (1) the relationship between economic growth and e-waste imports exhibits an inverted U-shaped curve, with decoupling achieved when GDP per capita exceeds the WKC turning point of $10,755.23; (2) Emerging economies are categorized into six quadrants based on their e-waste decoupling status: high-income non-decoupling, low-income non-d

Scalable and Consolidated Microbial Platform for Rare Earth Element Leaching and Recovery from Waste Sources.

Chemical methods for the extraction and refinement of technologically critical rare earth elements (REEs) are energy-intensive, hazardous, and environmentally destructive. Current biobased extraction systems rely on extremophilic organisms and generate many of the same detrimental effects as chemical methodologies. The mesophilic methylotrophic bacterium Methylobacterium extorquens AM1 was previously shown to grow using electronic waste by naturally acquiring REEs to power methanol metabolism. Here we show that growth using electronic waste as a sole REE source is scalable up to 10 L with cons

Catalytic effect and mechanism of in-situ metals on pyrolysis of FR4 printed circuit boards: Insights from kinetics and products.

Pyrolysis is a promising method for the recovery of waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs), but few researches have noticed the influence of in-situ metals. This study conducted a series of comparisons between metal-free leftover pieces (LP) and intact boards (IB), including pyrolysis characteristics, volatile emission, kinetics, and thermodynamic parameters. The thermo-gravimetry (TG) analyses indicated that both the samples presented predominant mass loss in narrow temperature intervals, and characteristic pyrolysis temperatures of IB were approximately 15 °C lower than those of LP.
