BACKGROUND: The amygdala is a central node in the brain network that processes aversive emotions and is extensively innervated by dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine [5-HT]) neurons. Alterations in DRN 5-HT1A receptor availability cause phenotypes characterized by fearful behavior in preclinical models. However, it is unknown whether 5-HT1A receptor availability is linked specifically to the processing of aversive emotions in humans or whether it modulates connectivity in brain networks involved in emotion processing. To answer this question, we investigated the relations

OBJECTIVE: To explore the cross-sectional associations among emotional regulation strategies, emotional labor, and job burnout among clinical nurses in a single-center setting, and to examine whether cognitive reappraisal moderates the association between surface acting and job burnout, thereby providing a basis for subsequent multi-center longitudinal studies and nursing management research.
METHODS: A single-center, convenience-sampled cross-sectional correlational study was conducted, enrolling 210 clinical nurses from a tertiary hospital in Jiangsu Province, China. Measures included a dem

Emotion regulation strategies influence how individuals experience and express emotions. Previous work suggests that self-distancing can reduce negative emotional responses, whereas self-immersion can amplify them. This study quantified how these emotion regulation strategies, applied during exposure to negative and neutral videos, shaped self-rated emotional experience across valence, arousal and intensity dimensions, influenced the free production of emotion-descriptive labels and altered measures of respiratory and cardiovascular physiology. A total of 45 participants took part in a task du

Parkinson's disease (PD), a range of neuropsychiatric symptoms, including anhedonia, depression, emotional control, and cognitive deficits, may manifest. This study aims to investigate the impact of anhedonia, emotional regulation, and emotional expression on PD. The research included 68 PD patients and 60 healthy controls. Both groups were assessed using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Emotional Expression Scale (EES), the Short Form of the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS), and the Clinician-Administered Snaith-Hamilton Pleasure Scale (SHAPS), all administered

Individuals' beliefs about the malleability of emotions have been theorised to play a role in their psychological distress by influencing emotion regulation processes, such as the use of emotion regulation strategies. We conducted a meta-analysis to test this idea across studies with a focus on the relationships between emotion malleability beliefs and five distinct emotion regulation strategies: cognitive reappraisal, suppression, avoidance, rumination, and acceptance. Further, using two-stage meta-analytic structural equation modelling (TSSEM), we examined whether the emotion regulation stra

Emotion dysregulation (ED) describes a difficulty with the modulation of which emotions are felt, as well as when and how these emotions are experienced or expressed. It is a focal overarching symptom in many severe and prevalent neuropsychiatric diseases, including bipolar disorders (BD), attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and borderline personality disorder (BPD). In all these disorders, ED can manifest through symptoms of depression, anxiety, or affective lability. Considering the many symptomatic similarities between BD, ADHD, and BPD, a transdiagnostic approach is a promisin

Misophonia is a newly described condition characterized by sensory and emotional reactivity (e.g., anxiety, anger, disgust) to repetitive, pattern-based sounds (e.g., throat clearing, chewing, slurping). Individuals with misophonia report significant functional impairment and interpersonal distress. Growing research indicates ineffective coping and emotional functioning broadly (e.g., affective lability, difficulties with emotion regulation) are central to the clinical presentation and severity of misophonia. Preliminary evidence suggests an association between negative emotionality and defici

BACKGROUND: Irritability and anxiety frequently co-occur in pediatric populations. Studies separately looking at the neural correlates of these symptoms have identified engagement of similar neural systems - particularly those implicated in emotional processing. Both irritability and anxiety can be considered negative valence emotional states that might relate to emotion dysregulation. However, previous work has not examined the neural responding during the performance of an emotion regulation task as a function of interaction between irritability and anxiety simultaneously.

Adolescents learn about emotions through interacting with parents and friends, though there is limited longitudinal research on this topic. This study examined longitudinal patterns in parent and friend emotion socialization and adolescent emotion regulation. Eighty-seven adolescents reported on parent and friend emotion socialization. Parents reported on adolescent emotion regulation. Parents' responses were stable over time and across gender. Friends of girls reciprocated negative emotions more and were less punitive over time, whereas friends of boys increased in comforting and decreased in

Beliefs that individuals hold about whether emotions are malleable or fixed, also referred to as emotion malleability beliefs, may play a crucial role in individuals' emotional experiences and their engagement in changing their emotions. The current review integrates affective science and clinical science perspectives to provide a comprehensive review of how emotion malleability beliefs relate to emotionality, emotion regulation, and specific clinical disorders and treatment. Specifically, we discuss how holding more malleable views of emotion could be associated with more active emotion regul

BACKGROUND: The development of socio-emotional competencies is essential for school readiness. Children with behavioural, emotional or social difficulties, upon entering the school, are often at an increased risk of poorer academic and health outcomes. Whilst children largely learn early emotion regulation skills and self-regulation through parental observation and modelling, a known benefit of mindful parenting, an understanding of how mindful parenting and child emotional regulation relate to one another during these important early years of schooling remains limited. This study aimed to det

Increased vulnerability in elderly men to their partner's loss by death, and also due to dementia, is discussed through the lens of attachment theory. This vulnerability stems from compromised emotional regulation, reward processing, and limited social support. For this reason, dementia-related ambiguous loss is particularly challenging for them because it requires complex emotional adjustment, adding to caregiving and household duties.

Virtual reality (VR) nature therapies show promise for emotion regulation, but optimal combinations of settings remain unclear. This within-subjects study examined how cultural familiarity (Hong Kong marine vs. German forest sceneries) and interaction mode (sitting vs. standing) affect mood, embodiment, nature connectedness, and VR presence in 31 participants (mean age 22.5 years, SD 2.1; 18 female, 13 male; no prior VR experience reported by 74%). Using immersive 360-degree VR natural sceneries, we assessed outcomes via standardized scales before and after exposure. Results revealed significa

OBJECTIVE: Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a rare disease that presents with recurrent attacks that can be triggered by stress or other emotions. The emotional impact of HAE is well-documented, although mainly via self-reported questionnaires. In this study, we used physiological measures to investigate stress regulation in patients with HAE and compared them to patients with immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), a disease that also progresses with attacks but without emotional triggers. METHODS: Twenty-six adult patients with HAE or ITP (13 each) were included in the study. Patients were asked to per

PURPOSE: Children with surgically corrected nonsyndromic craniosynostosis have been previously found to have neurocognitive and behavioral difficulties. Children with metopic synostosis have been described to have more difficulties than children with sagittal synostosis. This study aims to characterize the behavioral differences between children with metopic and sagittal synostosis.
METHODS: Children with metopic and sagittal synostosis were recruited at school age. Parents completed four separated behavioral assessments: Conners-3 (evaluation of ADHD), Social Responsiveness Scale-2 (SRS-2: e

Schizophrenia (SZ) patients exhibit deficits in emotion regulation that affect their daily functioning. There is evidence that the prefrontal cortex plays an important role in emotion regulation. However, it remains unclear how this brain region is involved in emotion regulation deficits in SZ, and how such deficits impact performance on cognitively demanding tasks. We examined how happy and fearful emotional distractors impact performance on working memory (WM) tasks of varying difficulty (0-back, 2-back), and brain activity using fMRI. Participants were 20 patients with SZ and 20 healthy con

A narrative review of the major evidence concerning the relationship between emotional regulation and depression was conducted. The literature demonstrates a mediating role of emotional regulation in the development of depression and physical illness. Literature suggests in fact that the employment of adaptive emotional regulation strategies (e.g., reappraisal) causes a reduction of stress-elicited emotions leading to physical disorders. Conversely, dysfunctional emotional regulation strategies and, in particular, rumination and emotion suppression appear to be influential in the pathogenesis

People use different strategies to regulate their emotions, and these emotion regulation patterns have important implications for mental health. For over two decades, the most widely used tool for assessing emotion regulation has been the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, a 10-item measure of cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression. Here, we introduce a new 30-item version-the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire-30 (ERQ-30). Built on the conceptual foundation of the process model of emotion regulation, the ERQ-30 aims to advance emotion regulation assessments by capturing a more comprehe

INTRODUCTION: Investigations on emotion regulation strategies (ERS) primarily focus on the influence of instructed emotion regulation (ER) on outcomes. However, recent work has shown that selection of ERS is dependent on, e.g., situational demands and personal resources.
METHODS: In this current investigation, we used an online diary to investigate ERS used by free choice and their association with ER-success, stress and rumination. We identified four factors of ERS: cognitive perspective change, cognitive-behavioral problem-solving, suppression-distraction and body-social ERS. Associations o
