Beyond Horizontal Expansion: Structural, Educational, and Leadership Pathways to Nursing Professional Empowerment.

The horizontal growth of nursing education globally over recent decades has not been matched by a corresponding vertical breakthrough in professional autonomy. Nurses remain structurally subordinated within clinical governance, resource allocation, and institutional decision-making. This discursive paper argues that this gap persists because three mutually reinforcing mechanisms remain intact: historically entrenched institutional path dependence, operational deficits in competency-based evaluation frameworks, and persistent gaps in how leadership translates structural and educational reforms

Reading and reforming breast self-examination discourse: claiming missed opportunities for empowerment.

For close to 45 years breast self-examination (BSE) has had nearly uncontested support as depicted in mass media accounts. Just recently, however, a number of breast cancer activists have spoken out against the practice. They claim that BSE is oppressive and fosters victim blaming, which simply is not in the best interests of women. Judging by the media reports I reviewed, these activists may have a valid point. The discourse of the popular media articles that constitutes the issue of BSE for the average woman blames women for not doing their part to reduce high breast cancer mortality statist

A latent class analysis of cognitive empowerment and ethnic identity: An examination of heterogeneity between profile groups on dimensions of emotional psychological empowerment and social justice orientation among urban youth of color.

Psychological empowerment (PE) encompasses key aspects of youth development and civic engagement. Empowerment scholarship has largely focused on the intrapersonal or emotional component of PE, which considers perceptions of control and self-efficacy, specifically in the sociopolitical sphere. Fewer studies have assessed the interactional or cognitive component of PE. Even less have examined the empirical association aspects of PE, including cognitive empowerment, with conceptually related variables, such as ethnic identity. Those studies that are present have shown that the association between

Promoting patient empowerment in chronic care: A scoping review of key facilitating factors.

OBJECTIVES: Chronic conditions represent a growing global health challenge, requiring ongoing management in which patients play an active role. Although patient empowerment is increasingly recognized as important, practical insights on how to support it remain limited. This scoping review aims to identify key factors promoting patient empowerment in managing chronic conditions. METHODS: A literature search was conducted in Medline, Embase, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), and Scopus in March 2025. Studies were included if they described factors, strategies, i

Promoting Health Through Empowerment: Pilot Evaluation of a Youth Participatory Action Research Program.

Youth participatory action research (YPAR) elevates youth as change agents in their schools and communities. The YPAR studies have demonstrated impact on psychological empowerment and civic engagement, both thought to lead to improved health. This exploratory evaluation assessed physical and emotional health among youth in a YPAR program. We implemented an eight-session YPAR program across four neighborhoods in Pittsburgh, PA. Surveys were administered at baseline, end-of-program (EOP), and 1 year from baseline (T3) to measure changes in the following: psychological empowerment, civic engageme

Dispositional characteristics, relational well-being and perceived life satisfaction and empowerment of elders.

OBJECTIVES: The broad purpose of this research is to identify the key modifiable variables most related to elders' life satisfaction and empowerment in order to improve the efficacy of interventions projects. Our study aims to integrate the theoretical perspectives of personality and community psychology focusing both on dispositional characteristics and relational well-being of elders, investigating triads, composed by an elder, a paid caregiver and the most involved relative. This study explores the impact of (1) some socio-demographic characteristics of elders, (2) some modifiable dispositi

Women's empowerment and fertility decline among the Pare of Kilimanjaro region, Northern Tanzania.

This research was designed to explore the connection between the empowerment of women and fertility outcomes, through an ethnographic study, a community-based survey and in-depth interviews. The purpose of the work is to test the relationship between a fertility decline and the status of women in a rural area of Kilimanjaro Region, Tanzania. Our major hypothesis was that the decline in fertility in the Kilimanjaro Region-given that the preconditions proposed by Caldwell, Orubuloye, and Caldwell (1992) have been satisfied-is due to the empowerment of women, particularly to gender equity within

Patient empowerment via 'pushed' delivery of Personalised Healthcare educational content over the internet.

We present an Internet-based Personalised Healthcare Information (PHI) dissemination system. Information personalisation is guided by the individual's current health profile as recorded in his/her EMR. A PHI package is composed by intelligently selecting and synthesizing various topic-specific documents, each corresponding to some health parameter noted in the EMR. To ensure medical consistency, constraint satisfaction techniques are employed during the information selection phase. The resultant PHI package--covering both long-term and immediate health-maintenance requirements--can be pro-acti

Equity-Driven and Community Empowerment-Focused Social Prescribing: Lessons From the Front Lines.

Social prescribing offers an individual- and community-centred approach to addressing social isolation and a broader range of social risks to health and health inequities. The emerging Canadian model of social prescribing puts equity and community at its centre. To support the critical development of such programs, we offer lessons from three key areas of implementation: shifting the culture of health teams, instilling a core focus on equity and building practical support for health teams ready to engage in this work. The wider development of equity- and community-focused social prescribing pr

Predictive Relationships Among Nurses' Perceptions of Shared Governance, Psychological Empowerment, and Turnover Intentions.

BACKGROUND: A significant shortage of experienced nurses poses a major challenge in health care. Although evidence indicates that shared governance, a hallmark of Magnet organizations, supports nurse retention, gaps remain in understanding how psychological empowerment influences this relationship. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate predictive pathways among nurses' perceptions of shared governance, psychological empowerment, and turnover intention, with psychological empowerment examined as a mediating mechanism. METHODS: A total of 313 nurses from an integrated care sy

From reproductive violence to empowerment: reconquering power in assisted reproduction - a qualitative study.

People who use medically assisted reproduction (MAR) outside the legal and/or medical framework are generally on the margins of the dominant procreative norm, making them particularly vulnerable to a wide range of reproductive violence such as legal restriction to medical care, discrimination or mistreatment. The aim of this study was to explore experiences of reproductive violence among people living in France who sought MAR either abroad or without medical assistance. Semi-structured interviews were conducted between 2022 and 2023. Almost half of the interviewees (n = 28/69) had been confron

Exploring Empowerment in Group Antenatal Care: Insights from an Insider and Outsider Perspective.

Background: Empowerment during pregnancy is linked to improved maternal and infant health outcomes and greater maternal well-being. Group Antenatal Care (GANC), a participant-centered model of care, promotes empowerment, active engagement, and the deconstruction of hierarchy between participants and care providers. It combines health assessment, interactive learning, and community building. While empowerment is a core concept of GANC, the ways it manifests and the elements that facilitate it remain unclear. Method: We conducted a generic qualitative study across four organizations in Brussels,
