BACKGROUND: Subdural empyema is a rare, rapidly progressive intracranial infection that may follow sinusitis, craniofacial trauma, or contiguous facial infection. Early findings may be subtle, and delayed recognition in the emergency department can result in neurologic deterioration.
CASE REPORT: A 16-year-old male presented approximately 2 hours after minor blunt frontal trauma after striking his forehead against a car hood. Because he vomited twice, cranial computed tomography (CT) was performed and showed no visible fracture, acute intracranial pathology, or paranasal sinus opacification.

BACKGROUND: Subdural empyema is a neurosurgical emergency traditionally managed with craniotomy and prolonged intravenous antibiotic therapy. Minimally invasive approaches may represent an alternative in selected cases, particularly when combined with timely diagnosis and targeted antimicrobial treatment.
PATIENTS: We report two cases of subdural empyema treated with minimally invasive burr-hole evacuation.
CASE 1: A 22-year-old man with developmental anomalies and postischemic stroke history presented with intermittent high fever for 2 weeks. Rapid neurological deterioration over 24 hours l

Infratentorial subdural empyema is a neurosurgical emergency that is associated with an alarmingly high morbidity and mortality if appropriate management is delayed. It is an important differential to consider when confronted with a patient with a reduced Glasgow Coma Scale, focal neurology and symptoms of raised intracranial pressure in the presence of a head and neck infection. It is also important that the primary team managing these patients is aware of the many pathogens that may be involved, including Escherichia coli. Early recognition, prompt diagnosis, timely involvement of the approp

A 63-year-old male with a preexisting chronic subdural hematoma presented with progressive confusion and left hemiparesis as well as high fever. Subdural empyema was strongly suspected. At surgery, the empyema was encapsulated by definite inner and outer membranes. Cultures isolated from the subdural fluid and from an abscess of his left thigh yielded methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. A pulsed-field gel electrophoresis showed these two strains were genetically identical. Hematogenous infection of a preexisting subdural hematoma is an extremely rare cause of subdural empyema.

We report a fatal subdural empyema caused by Campylobacter rectus in a 66-year-old female who developed acute onset of confusion, dysarthria, and paresis in her left extremities. A CT scan showed hypodensity in a crescentic formation with a mild mid-line shift. She had a bruise on her forehead caused by a fall several days before admission, which initially raised subdural hematoma (SDH) diagnosis, and a burr hole procedure was planned. However, her condition deteriorated on the admission night, and she died before dawn. An autopsy revealed that she had subdural empyema (SDE) caused by Campylob

Infratentorial empyema is a rare medical emergency typically presenting secondary to a middle ear infection. Nonspecific symptoms, limited access to radiological facilities, and imaging artifacts render this pathology prone to misdiagnosis and delayed intervention. An 11-year-old girl presented to the emergency department with a high fever, cervicalgia, and a two-week history of frontal headache. Computed tomography revealed parapharyngeal abscess and polysinusitis. Pus drained from the parapharyngeal abscess showed Staphylococcus capitis and Streptococcus intermedius. Treatment with intraveno

Staphylococcus aureus is a global bacterial pathogen. It is an uncommon pathogen causing central nervous system infections, accounting for <1% cases of bacterial meningitis. Sinusitis, trauma and presence of an intracranial device have been reported as risk factors for developing meningitis and brain abscesses. A previously healthy 5-month-old female infant presented to a hospital in North-Eastern India in February 2018 with Staphylococcus aureus sepsis and meningitis and was subsequently detected to have developed bilateral subdural empyema on computed tomography scan of the brain. Giant frontal mucocele (GFM) is an extremely rare cause of frontal lobe syndrome. Subdural empyema (SDE) is an uncommon complication of paranasal sinisutis, for which craniotomy and decompressive craniotomy are the most effective surgical procedures. A 54-year-old man was brought unconscious to the emergency room where recurrent generalized seizures occurred. Heroine abuse, HCV-related hepatitis, prolonged antibiotic therapy for treatment of purulent rhinorrhea, along with recent personality changes were reported. High white blood cell count, pansinusitis, GFM, SDE and cerebritis were document

Intracranial infections, especially subdural empyema, due to salmonella are rare. Subdural empyema caused by Salmonella paratyphi A has been documented only once earlier in the literature. Hence, we report a case of subdural empyema and osteomyelitis of cranial vault due to S. paratyphi A. A 42- year-old male presented with headache and purulent discharge from right parietal burr hole wound site. Patient gave a history of head injury two years ago. He underwent burr hole evacuation of chronic subdural haematoma, excision of outer membrane and right parietal craniectomy. The cultures grew S. pa

BACKGROUND: Osteomas of the paranasal sinuses are benign, slow-growing bone tumours with preferred localization in the frontal sinus. They often remain asymptomatic and are found by chance in x-ray examination. Clinical manifestations include headache and orbital complications.
CASE REPORT: We describe the case of a 54-year-old male patient who, based on an osteoma of the frontal sinus, developed an acute frontal sinusitis complicated by subdural empyema. Therapy consisted of two operative interventions.
CONCLUSIONS: Aetiogenesis of paranasal osteomas is still unclear. Inspite of their slow

OBJECTIVE: To present a new technique for the management of subdural empyema to promote resolution and prevent recurrence.
BACKGROUND: Classic treatment for subdural empyema (SDE) has consisted of antibiotics and surgical treatment with either craniotomy or burrholes. There are still several complications that persist after current treatment, including relatively high rates of morbidity and mortality. In this case report, we present a technique that utilises a novel irrigating-draining catheter to provide a minimally invasive approach for empyema resolution with continuous antibiotic irrigati

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Subdural empyema (SE) following chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) surgery is an uncommon but serious complication. The best treatment approach, typically a choice between craniotomy and burr hole surgery, is still debated. This case report introduces an innovative method using burr hole surgery with double-tube irrigation, a potentially effective alternative to the more invasive craniotomy.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 81-year-old male, 48 days post-CSDH surgery, developed SE with Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection. The initial treatment with burr hole

Sinogenic subdural empyema is a rare and life-threatening complication of bacterial sinusitis. Non-specific symptoms tend to make early diagnosis and management challenging. We report the case of a previously healthy 16-year-old male who presented with a one-week history of upper respiratory symptoms and headache followed by a rapidly progressive neurologic deterioration. Multifocal subdural empyema was confirmed via multiparametric MRI. Cultures taken during neurosurgical intervention identified a polymicrobial etiology, including Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococc

BACKGROUND/AIM: Although chemotherapy for colorectal cancer has advanced remarkably, long-term chemotherapy can lead to a variety of infections. However, if chemotherapy must be discontinued to control infection, there is a risk of progression of colorectal cancer. Intracranial subdural empyema is a life-threatening intracranial infection. The condition requires 6-8 weeks of antibiotic therapy, and the patient must discontinue chemotherapy during treatment. We herein present a case of intracranial subdural empyema during long-term chemotherapy for metastatic rectal cancer.

Subdural empyema can be precipitated by a range of pathogens. Common clinical symptoms include fever, headache, seizures, and changed mental status. Yet, cerebral infections caused by Salmonella are relatively uncommon as it is rare for Salmonella to invade the central nervous system. We present the first reported case of Salmonella enterica serovar Dublin causing subdural empyema in an 83-year-old female, which was successfully managed with surgical burr hole and drainage in addition to prolonged targeted antimicrobial therapy consisting of 2 g of intravenous Ceftriaxone twice daily for a tot

It has long been believed that spinal subdural empyemas (SDEs) with neurological symptoms result in death if operative intervention is not performed. We present a case of addressing an extensive spinal SDE with a minimally invasive procedure: a bedside lumbar drain. Our patient is a 67-year-old man with medical history significant for type I diabetes who presented 2 weeks after a right shoulder steroid injection with septic arthritis. An MRI was obtained for back pain which revealed spinal SDE from the cervical to lumbosacral spine. Given patient's acute sepsis, haemodynamic instability, and e
