On the history of gout: paleopathological evidence from the Medici family of Florence.

OBJECTIVES: Throughout history, gout has been referred to as the "disease of the kings", and has been clearly associated with the lifestyle of the aristocratic social classes. According to the written sources, several members of the famous Medici family of Florence suffered from an arthritic disease that contemporary physicians called "gout". A paleopathological study carried out on the skeletal remains of some members of the family, exhumed from their tombs in the Church of San Lorenzo in Florence, offered a unique opportunity to directly investigate the evidence of the arthritic diseases aff

Pestilence, riots, lynchings and desecration of corpses. The sleep of reason produces monsters.

Vampirism has been a component of Central European and Balkan folklore since the Middle Ages and was often believed to be responsible for the transmission of serious infectious diseases such as plague and tuberculosis/consumption. Vampirism was believed to be spread within the same family or village and if the rite of the so-called second burial after death was not performed. The practice of "second burial" entailed exhumation of the body and the removal of the shroud from the mouth of the corpse, and a search for evidence if the corpse had chewed the cloth. If the shroud was chewed, a handful

A complex military repatriation cold case assisted by craniofacial superimposition.

In 1950, partially skeletonized remains of a U.S. serviceman were recovered near the Pusan Perimeter, South Korea during the Korean War. Following initial analysis (no identification), the remains were returned to the U.S.A. and interred at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Hawaii. In 2011, an exhumation was conducted for renewed accounting/repatriation analysis. Historical loss information indicated the skeleton may belong to one of 29 individuals. Twenty-eight of these individuals were excluded by DNA, dental records, induction chest radiographs, and/or biological profiles. DNA,

Geogenic greenhouse gas emissions and shale weathering: lessons learned from an alpine "eternal flame".

Natural hydrocarbon gas seeps have been reported over a wide range of geological settings, and their contribution to atmospheric concentrations of potent greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4) may be considerable. Potential gas sources in sedimentary environments include organic-rich source rocks such as peats, coalbeds, and shale clays. The origins of natural methane seepages occurring in the French Subalpine Chains are poorly constrained and only little information is available on the mechanisms behind the gas release by weathering of organic-rich shales, notably when overprinted by recent tectonism. Recurrent familial case of early childhood sudden death: Complex post mortem genetic investigations.

INTRODUCTION: Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC) needs to be fully assessed considering its impact on the family, parents and siblings. Inborn Errors of Metabolism (IEM) such as Medium-Chain Acyl-CoA Dehydrogenase Deficiency (MCADD) should be taken into consideration when SUDC occurres. Our aim is to present a family with two successive SUDC and to discuss the post-mortem genetics investigations revealing an IEM implication. CASES REPORT: A complete autopsy with genetic testing was performed when the proband, a 4-year-old girl, died. A few years previously, her older brother had die

The role of buoyancy in the fate of ultra-high-pressure eclogite.

Eclogite facies metamorphism of the lithosphere forms dense mineral assemblages at high- (1.6-2.4 GPa) to ultra-high-pressure (>2.4-12 GPa: UHP) conditions that drive slab-pull forces during its subduction to lower mantle conditions. The relative densities of mantle and lithospheric components places theoretical limits for the re-exposure, and peak conditions expected, of subducted lithosphere. Exposed eclogite terranes dominated by rock denser than the upper mantle are problematic, as are interpretations of UHP conditions in buoyant rock types. Their subduction and exposure require processes

Undetected patricide: Inaccuracy of cause of death determination without an autopsy.

Patricide (killing the father) is uncommon form of homicide. Usually the assaults occur at home in the absence of witnesses and adult sons are frequently involved. Homicides in a domestic context usually do not tend to recurrence, because the motivation for the crime ends with the death of the parent. However, this is not what was observed in the present case study dealing with the death of a 70 years old white man originally misclassified as accident and discovered three years later only after an additional homicide in a family context of a 60 years old white lady. Multiple stab wounds to the

The millennial dynamics of malaria in the mediterranean basin: documenting Plasmodium spp. on the medieval island of Corsica.

INTRODUCTION: The lack of well-preserved material upon which to base the paleo-microbiological detection of Plasmodium parasites has prevented extensive documentation of past outbreaks of malaria in Europe. By trapping intact erythrocytes at the time of death, dental pulp has been shown to be a suitable tissue for documenting ancient intraerythrocytic pathogens such as Plasmodium parasites. METHODS: Total DNA and proteins extracted from 23 dental pulp specimens collected from individuals exhumed from the 9th to 13th century archaeological site in Mariana, Corsica, were analyzed using open-min

A likely geological record of deep tremor and slow slip events from a subducted continental broken formation.

Fluids in subduction zones play a key role in controlling seismic activity, drastically affecting the rheology of rocks, triggering mineral reactions, and lowering the effective stress. Fluctuating pore pressure is one important parameter for the switch between brittle and ductile deformation, thus impacting seismogenesis. Episodic tremor and slow slip events (ETS) have been proposed as a common feature of the geophysical signature of subduction zones. Their geological record, however, remains scanty. Only the detailed and further characterization of exhumed fossil geological settings can help

Diclofenac Concentrations in Post-Mortem Specimens-Distribution, Case Reports, and Validated Method (UHPLC-QqQ-MS/MS) for Its Determination.

The aim of the research was to establish a sensitive method for the quantification of diclofenac in postmortem samples. The developed method was applied in six cases: three fetuses in which the use of abortion pills by their mothers was suspected, one case of duodenal ulcer perforation, one case of traffic accident with fatal outcome, and one acute renal failure in which the distribution of diclofenac was examined. The analyses were performed using liquid-liquid extraction of postmortem samples and the quantification of diclofenac via ultra-high performance liquid chromatography, coupled with

Excavation of mass graves with Serbian context: Complexity of the political milieu.

This paper will discuss the complexity of the investigation of mass graves in today's Serbia (part of ex Yugoslavia), belonging primarily to WWII with an exception of one mass grave from WWI, through the prism of historical events behind it. By interpreting historical and political circumstances, we will show why and on what occasions mass graves, as cultural-historical monuments and symbols of the sufferings of Serbs, Jews, Romani, and other nations or ethnic groups, remained outside the focus of expert teams. Also, through examples of explored sites related to WWII (Višnjica, Topola, Kraguje

A great enigma of the Italian Renaissance: paleopathological study on the death of Giovanni dalle Bande Nere (1498-1526) and historical relevance of a leg amputation.

BACKGROUND: The Medici project consisted in archeological and paleopathological researches on some members of the great dynasty of the Italian Renaissance. The remains of Giovanni de' Medici, so-called "dalle Bande Nere" (Forlì 1498- Mantua 1526) have not been investigated yet. The enigma of the fatal injury and leg amputation of the famous Captain excited curiosity of paleopathologists, medical scientists and Italian Society of Orthopedic and Traumatology which contributed to realize the project of exhumation and study of his skeletal remains. The aim of the study is to report the first anthr

The closing kinship window: a continuous identification framework centred on kinship for historical and postconflict mass graves.

Historical and post-conflict mass grave programmes increasingly recover genetic profiles from skeletal remains, yet final identification may remain limited when family reference collection, post-mortem analysis, matching and re-analysis are organised as separate projects. This evidence-informed framework development study presents the Kinship-Centred Continuous Identification Framework for settings in which the possible victim set is open or uncertain. Framework development is defined as the integration of established evidence and operational standards into a time-ordered system with explicit

Forensic Anthropology in Investigations of Crimes Against Humanity: Global Dimensions and the Mid-19th-Century Ajnala (India) Massacre.

Heinous crimes and brutalities have decimated humanity throughout human history. In modern times, forensic anthropologists have helped to reconstruct the nature and mechanism, intent and purpose, manner, and circumstances of various inhumane instances of genocides and violent crimes. Anthropologists endeavor to bring closure and comfort to bereaved families by disseminating information about the location, exhumation, and identification of the remains of victims. The methodological armamentarium and scope of forensic anthropology have developed much beyond the realms of the traditional biologic

Facial approximation of Tycho Brahe's partial skull based on estimated data with TIVMI-AFA3D.

The virtual approach in physical and forensic anthropology is increasingly used to further analyze human remains, but also to propose new didactic means for visualization and dissemination of scientific results. Computerized facial approximation (FA) offers an alternative to manual methods, but usually requires a complete facial skeleton to allow for the estimation of the facial appearance of an individual. This paper presents the case of Tycho Brahe, Danish astronomer born during the XVIth century, whose remains were reanalyzed at the occasion of a short exhumation in 2010. Cranial remains of

Intravital skin ulcer in a late 18th century Spanish child mummy: evidence for septicemic death?

During excavation campaigns carried out in north-eastern Spain (Aragonese), a well -preserved late 18th century infant mummy was exhumed from the topsoil of El Piquete church (Quinto, Zaragoza). At morphological macroscopical observation, a penetrating lesion lateral to the right knee was identified. The lesion was covered by linen bindings with a circumscribed brownish discoloration. Investigations were carried out with a special focus on the lower tight lesion in order to ascertain whether it had occurred intra-vitam, perimortem or post-mortem. A CT scan was performed to establish the age at

Anatomical and Computed Tomography Study of the Mandible of the Patagonian Huemul (Hippocamelus bisulcus): Ecological and Clinical Insights.

Given the high prevalence of skeletal and mandibular diseases in the Patagonian Huemul, comprehensive anatomical studies are essential to understand the impact of nutritional deficiencies and support conservation efforts. The aim of this study is to provide a detailed anatomical characterisation of three exhumed mandibles of Patagonian huemul (Hippocamelus bisulcus) through three-dimensional reconstructions obtained from computed tomography data and semi-automatic segmentation, documenting their distinctive features. The findings revealed distinctive features in the mandible, consistent with t

The source of the Black Death in fourteenth-century central Eurasia.

The origin of the medieval Black Death pandemic (AD 1346-1353) has been a topic of continuous investigation because of the pandemic's extensive demographic impact and long-lasting consequences1,2. Until now, the most debated archaeological evidence potentially associated with the pandemic's initiation derives from cemeteries located near Lake Issyk-Kul of modern-day Kyrgyzstan1,3-9. These sites are thought to have housed victims of a fourteenth-century epidemic as tombstone inscriptions directly dated to 1338-1339 state 'pestilence' as the cause of death for the buried individuals9. Here we re

Natural or intended mummification? Specific case of a child mummy.

The aim of this work was to document and analyze an exceptionally preserved mummified body of a six-year-old boy found in a family tomb in Skalná, Czech Republic. The boy died of scarlet fever in 1887, and was buried under ground in a cemetery in an unknown coffin shortly after death. His parents exhumed his cadaver and entombed it in the family crypt in two tin coffins a year later. This secondary burial and violent opening of the coffins in the end of the World War II leaving the body exposed to external climatic conditions led to its natural (spontaneous) dry mummification. The computed tom

Assessing the Parasitic Burden in a Late Antique Florentine Emergency Burial Site.

Excavation (2008-2014) carried out under the Uffizi Gallery (Florence, Italy) led to the discovery of 75 individuals, mostly buried in multiple graves. Based on Roman minted coins, the graves were preliminarily dated between the second half of the 4th and the beginning of the 5th centuries CE. Taphonomy showed that this was an emergency burial site associated with a catastrophic event, possibly an epidemic of unknown etiology with high mortality rates. In this perspective, paleoparasitological investigations were performed on 18 individuals exhumed from 9 multiple graves to assess the burden o
