[Changes in facial nerve function, morphology and neurotrophic factor III expression following three types of facial nerve injury].

OBJECTIVE: To study the changes in facial nerve function, morphology and neurotrophic factor III (NT-3) expression following three types of facial nerve injury. METHOD: Changes in facial nerve function (in terms of blink reflex (BF), vibrissae movement (VM) and position of nasal tip) were assessed in 45 rats in response to three types of facial nerve injury: partial section of the extratemporal segment (group one), partial section of the facial canal segment (group two) and complete transection of the facial canal segment lesion (group three). All facial nerves specimen were then cut into two

Long-term subjective and objective outcome after primary repair of traumatic facial nerve injuries.

Although traumatic facial nerve paralysis is a severe handicap, there are no follow-up studies evaluating outcome after primary repair of traumatic facial nerve injuries. From May 1988 to August 2005, 27 patients (mean age, 27 years) were operated for traumatic facial nerve lesions (mean number of affected branches, 2.2). End-to-end facial nerve repair was always performed. All patients were invited to our outpatient clinic for standardized questionnaires (Facial Disability Index, Short Form-36 Health Survey), physical examination (Sunnybrook Facial Grading System), and clinical photographs. [Progress of the Mechanism of Acupuncture to Promote Repair of Facial Nerve Injury].

Facial nerve injury results in facial muscle movement disorders that interferes with patient's life. Acupuncture is an effective therapy for facial nerve injury, but its mechanism has not been clarified. The evidence supports that acupuncture can accelerate the repair of facial nerve injury by adjusting the electric wave of patient's facial muscle, improving facial blood circulation, and promoting the expression of cell and protein molecule.

[Facial nerve injury in neurosurgery: a rehabilitation potential of botulinum therapy].

Surgical treatment of posterior cranial fossa and cerebellopontine angle tumors is associated with a risk of facial nerve dysfunction. The causes for facial muscle paresis include nerve compression by the tumor, destruction of the nerve structure by the tumor growing from nerve fibers, nerve injury during surgical removal of the tumor, etc. The first 3 months after facial nerve injury are a potential therapeutic window for the use of botulinum toxin type A (BTA). During this period, the drug is introduced both in the healthy side to improve the facial symmetry at rest and during mimetic moveme

[Traumatic facial nerve injury in rabbits: a quantitative pathologic study].

Six kinds of facial nerve injury in 136 facial nerves of 68 rabbits were studied by quantitative pathology. The ratio of intrafascicular axon crossing and the ratio of intrafascicular area can reflect the extent of the lesions for non-cut injury (exposure, compression, stretch and crush) effectively. However, the ratio of mesial to distal intrafascicular area should be combined for the evaluation of cut injury (division and anastomosis). The mean optical density (F1), axon area (F13), and homogeneous degree (F49) can reflect quantitatively the form and extent of the single axon lesion and its

[Chronic facial pain due to nerve injury. Deafferentation pain].

Patients presenting chronic facial pain are very common. After profound examination a significant cause for this pain often cannot be found. Some patients are suffering from this pain due to injury of a sensible nerve and then it is called deafferentation pain. This somatic disorder can give different complaints. Pain can develop as a result of formation of neuromas 'cross-talking' of nerves and alterations in the central nerve system. It seems to be difficult to make clinical features to diagnose deafferentation pain and differentiate it from pain disorders where the psychic suffering seems t

Total facial nerve injury during mandibular distraction osteogenesis.

INTRODUCTION: Over the last 10-15 years, usage of internal mandibular distraction systems has increased in the pediatric population, particularly for craniofacial syndromes. Mandibular distraction osteogenesis (MDO) has been shown to be effective in avoiding tracheostomy or achieving early decannulation in patients with micro-retrognathic mandibles in hemifacial microsomia or Pierre Robin sequence. As the frequency of the application of MDO has increased, so has the awareness and management of subsequent complications from the procedure. In this study, we discuss a complication involving pares
