Better to keep a negative self-perception than ask for feedback? - How depressive symptoms are associated with the desire for social feedback.

BACKGROUND: We investigated whether depressive symptom severity is associated with incongruence between how people perceive themselves (self-perception) and how they expect others to perceive them (meta-perception). We also examined whether these discrepancies explain feedback-seeking. We hypothesized that elevated depressive symptoms are related to low preference for positive and self-incongruent feedback and high preference for negative and self-congruent feedback. METHOD: In study 1 (N = 149), we presented 20 positive and 20 negative traits. For each trait, participants rated their self- a

Probabilistic classification learning with corrective feedback is selectively impaired in early Huntington's disease--evidence for the role of the striatum in learning with feedback.

In general, declarative learning is associated with the activation of the medial temporal lobes (MTL), while the basal ganglia (BG) are considered the substrate for procedural learning. More recently it has been demonstrated the distinction of these systems may not be as absolute as previously thought and that not only the explicit or implicit nature of the memory task alone is important for the distinction of MTL or BG systems. Nevertheless, patients with BG dysfunction - such as patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) or Huntington's disease (HD) - are considered to be impaired at implicit le

Distinct influence of inter- versus intra-trial feedback on the brain response to subsequent feedback: Evidence from event-related potentials.

Substantial evidence indicates that feedback processing not only varies with the valence of feedback, but is also highly dependent on contextual factors. Even so, the influence of prior outcome history on current outcome evaluation is far from clear. To investigate this issue, we conducted two event-related potential (ERP) experiments using a modified gambling task whereby each trial was associated with two consequences. In experiment 1, two instances of feedback indicated participant performance on two dimensions of a single decision, within a trial. In experiment 2, participants made two dec

OsGSK2-OsBSK3 feedback loop controls rice BR signaling.

Brassinosteroids (BRs) are essential plant hormones that regulate growth and development, including leaf angle regulation and grain size determination. Maintaining appropriate BR signaling requires precise coordination between pathway activation and attenuation. BR signaling is initiated by OsBRI1 activation, which triggers a phosphorylation cascade that ultimately inhibits OsGSK2 kinase activity, releasing OsBZR1 from repression and activating downstream responses. However, whether additional regulatory mechanisms fine-tune BR signaling remains unclear. Here, we identify OsBSK3 as a direct su

Identifying the principal mechanism of star formation feedback.

Feedback from massive stars regulates the formation of next-generation stars and planets and thus shapes the evolution of galaxies, yet observational evidence capable of determining which mechanism dominates the feedback process has long been lacking. Here, we present a large-scale HI survey toward Orion A. With an unprecedented sensitivity and superior resolution, FAST (Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope) reveals a well-defined heart-shaped expanding HI bubble, enshrouding the well-known "Veil" bubble of ionized gas. The photoionization-driven and wind-driven gas expands at

Propeller-Based Handheld Force-Feedback Device for Navigation.

This article presents an evaluation of CrazyJoystick, a propeller-based handheld force-feedback device, for spatial navigation tasks in real-world and virtual reality environments. Building upon prior work validating the device's on-demand aerial deployment and directional cue discriminability, we investigated whether propeller-based kinesthetic torque cues can support effective wayfinding during continuous locomotion. We developed navigation-specific algorithms that generate egocentric directional cues using hierarchical decision logic optimized for dynamic heading corrections. Two user studi

Feedback Regulation of Pancreatic Juice Secretion in Pigs.

Pancreatic exocrine secretion is regulated by the physicochemical properties and nutrient composition of gastric and intestinal chyme. The present study examined integrative feedback mechanisms involved in the physiological control of pancreatic secretion, with particular emphasis on interactions between pancreatic juice, bile, and gut-derived regulatory and metabolic signals. A chronic porcine model enabling selective withdrawal and controlled reintroduction of pancreatic juice and bile into defined intestinal segments was employed. Duodenal and ileal exposure to pancreatic juice suppressed p

Psychophysical Evaluation of A Mechanotactile Haptic Feedback Device.

Sensory feedback enhances the intuitive operation of upper limb prostheses. However, most modern commercial prosthetic devices lack sensory feedback mechanisms due to the difficulty of integration and added complexity. Mechanotactile haptic feedback provides a non-invasive and low-cost alternative to traditional electromechanical haptic feedback modalities. While mechanotactile haptic feedback systems have been studied for their mechanical behaviour, their practical integration in prosthetic devices and associated human factors still remain to be investigated. Therefore, in this paper, we perf

Nonlinear dynamics in pulse-modulated feedback drug dosing.

Pulse-modulated feedback is utilized in drug dosing to mimic sustained over a longer period of time manual discrete dose administration, the latter is in contrast with continuous drug infusion. The intermittent mode of dosing calls for a hybrid (continuous-discrete) modeling of the closed-loop system, where the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of the drug are captured by differential equations whereas the control law is described by difference equations. Hybrid dynamics are highly nonlinear which complicates formal design of pulse-modulated feedback. This paper demonstrates complex nonlin

Neural response to social feedback and internalizing dimensions.

BACKGROUND: A growing literature has examined the reward positivity (RewP), an event-related potential indicator of reward sensitivity, to social feedback. Research has indicated that a larger RewP to social rejection is associated with multiple internalizing problems, including anxiety, depression, and borderline personality. However, it is not clear whether the similar relationships are due to higher-order transdiagnostic dimensions of psychopathology. METHODS: A total of 222 participants, 18 to 35 years (mean [M] = 23.06, standard deviation [SD] = 3.82; 86% assigned sex female), who were o

Statistical evaluation of tongue capability with visual feedback.

BACKGROUND: Analysis of tongue movement would benefit from a reference showcasing healthy tongue capability. We aimed to develop a reference of tongue capability and evaluated the role of visual feedback on the expression of movement. METHODS: Using a wireless tracking intraoral wearable device, we composed probability distributions of the tongue tip as subjects were asked to explore the entire sensing surface area. Half of the 32 subjects received live visual feedback of the location of the center of the tongue tip contact. RESULTS: We observed that the visual feedback group was 51.0% more

Cerebro-cerebellar networks facilitate learning through feedback decoupling.

Behavioural feedback is critical for learning in the cerebral cortex. However, such feedback is often not readily available. How the cerebral cortex learns efficiently despite the sparse nature of feedback remains unclear. Inspired by recent deep learning algorithms, we introduce a systems-level computational model of cerebro-cerebellar interactions. In this model a cerebral recurrent network receives feedback predictions from a cerebellar network, thereby decoupling learning in cerebral networks from future feedback. When trained in a simple sensorimotor task the model shows faster learning a

Glucocorticoid feedback paradox: a homage to Mary Dallman.

As the end product of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, the glucocorticoid hormones cortisol and corticosterone coordinate circadian activities, stress-coping, and adaptation to change. For this purpose, the hormone promotes energy metabolism and controls defense reactions in the body and brain. This life-sustaining action exerted by glucocorticoids occurs in concert with the autonomic nervous and immune systems, transmitters, growth factors/cytokines, and neuropeptides. The current contribution will focus on the glucocorticoid feedback paradox in the HPA-axis: the phenomenon that

ZNF384-ZEB1 feedback loop regulates breast cancer metastasis.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer has become the most frequently diagnosed cancer worldwide. Increasing evidence indicated that zinc finger proteins (ZNFs), the largest family of transcription factors, contribute to cancer development and progression. Although ZNF384 is overexpressed in several types of human cancer, the role of ZNF384 in breast cancer remains unknown. Therefore, our research focused on ZNF384 regulation of the malignant phenotype of breast cancer and the underlying molecular mechanisms. METHODS: CCK-8 and colony formation assays were used to evaluate cell proliferation. Transwell an

[Feedback from a COVID-19 acute geriatric unit].

Following the outbreak of coronavirus disease, many experience feedbacks have been set up, at the level of departments, hospitals or crisis units. In a geriatric ward, this helped to understand what had happened to each of the caregiver and to the community. In the event of a new wave, this will allow them to anticipate. This period strengthened the sense of belonging and the interest in the well-being of the care receiver.

Negative feedback control of neuronal activity by microglia.

Microglia, the brain's resident macrophages, help to regulate brain function by removing dying neurons, pruning non-functional synapses, and producing ligands that support neuronal survival1. Here we show that microglia are also critical modulators of neuronal activity and associated behavioural responses in mice. Microglia respond to neuronal activation by suppressing neuronal activity, and ablation of microglia amplifies and synchronizes the activity of neurons, leading to seizures. Suppression of neuronal activation by microglia occurs in a highly region-specific fashion and depends on the

Feedback-Controlled Release of Alendronate from Composite Microparticles.

Extended bone fractures or fractures coexisting with bone disorders can lead to non-unions where surgical intervention is required. Composite drug delivery systems are being used increasingly more in order to treat such defects locally. Alendronate (ALD), a bisphosphonate extensively used in clinical practice to treat conditions, such as osteoporosis, has been shown to assist bone fracture healing through its antiresorptive capacity. This study reports the development of a polymeric composite system for the in situ delivery of ALD, which possesses enhanced encapsulation efficiency (EE%) and de

Video feedback for families of hearing impaired children.

In order to improve speech-language development in children with hearing impairment, in addition to speech-language therapy, the family should be the modifying agent for a satisfactory therapeutic response. Studies that analyze the effectiveness of speech-language pathology (SLP) intervention programs through video feedback are important, given the positive effects of this tool on the modification of behaviors with families of children with disabilities. Therefore, it is believed that video feedback interventions contribute improve the communicative interactions between the families and childr

Deficient Response to Altered Auditory Feedback in Dyslexia.

Although dyslexia is characterized by a deficit in phonological representations, the nature of this deficit is debated. Previously, it was shown that adults with dyslexia respond differently to online manipulations of auditory feedback. In the present study, we found that individual differences in reading and reading-related skills within a group of 30 children (10-13 years old) with dyslexia were associated with the response to altered feedback. The fractional anisotropy of the arcuate fasciculus/superior longitudinal fasciculus was not directly related to the response to altered feedback. Th
