Uses of sodium fluoride varnish in dental practice.

Fluoride varnish is developed to prolong the contact time between fluoride and tooth surface, so that the tooth becomes more resistant to caries attack. The active ingredient of fluoride varnish is usually 5% sodium fluoride, (22,600 ppm fluoride). Studies have found that fairly insoluble globules of calcium fluoride-like material formed on the tooth surface after topical fluoride application. These globules act as a reservoir of fluoride in the mouth for a prolonged period of time. Systematic reviews corroborate evidence for the efficacy of fluoride varnish in the prevention of dental caries.

Influence of Time Interval, Temperature, and Storage Condition on Fluoride Release and Recharge from Silorane-Based Restorative Materials.

Objectives: The fluoride-releasing properties of restorative materials are crucial for the prevention of secondary caries as these can act as fluoride reservoirs. Hence, the present study aimed to investigate, assess, and compare the impact of time, temperature, and storage conditions on the fluoride release of silorane-based composites (SBCs) and methacrylate-based composites (MBCs), and also evaluate the variation in their reuptake of fluoride (after recharge). Methods: SBC and MBC test samples of 10 mm × 2 mm dimensions were prepared and tested for fluoride release and recharge in distilled

IMPACT OF FLUORIDE ON DENTAL HEALTH QUALITY.

INTRODUCTION: Fluoride is natural element that strengthens teeth and prevents their decay. Experts believe that the best way to prevent cavities is the use of fluoride from multiple sources. Studies even show that in some cases, fluoride can stop already started damage of the teeth. In children younger than 6 years fluoride is incorporated into the enamel of permanent teeth, making the teeth more resistant to the action of bacterial and acids in food. GOAL: The aim of this study is to determine the effects of improving the health status of teeth after six months treatment with the use of topi

Effects of CO2 laser on fluoride uptake in enamel.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of CO(2) laser on fluoride uptake in the loosely- and firmly-bound forms in enamel. METHODS: Five human molars were cut into halves before being treated with 2.0% NaF topical gel. Each half had three windows on the enamel surface, including one control and two experimental windows irradiated by two laser therapies. One half of each tooth was treated with 1 M KOH solution to remove the loosely-bound fluoride (calcium fluoride). A tooth section was obtained from each window and the relative fluorine concentration was analyze

Sjögren's syndrome: current therapies remain inadequate for a common disease.

Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is a systematic autoimmune disease characterised by dysfunction of the lacrimal and salivary glands. This dryness leads to the symptoms of dry eyes and keratoconjunctivitis sicca, which is painful and may predispose patients to ocular infections. Also, SS patients develop dry mouth, which is uncomfortable and associated with progressive dental disease. SS is divided into secondary SS (where the dryness symptoms are associated with another well defined autoimmune disorder such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, or scleroderma) and primary SS (where th

Glass inserts. A new dimension in restorative dentistry.

Pediatric restorative dentistry has traditionally involved the placement of a stainless steel crown following a pulpotomy in primary molars. The increased exposure to systemic and topical fluorides has significantly decreased smooth surface caries, yet occlusal pit and fissure caries remains a problem. Occlusal caries involving the pulp of primary molars, leaving the supporting walls intact, may be restored conservatively with the use of glass inserts. The glass inserts provide the major volume of the restoration, therefore a minimal amount of posterior composite resin is necessary. The glass

Alkali-soluble and insoluble fluoride in erupted and unerupted sound enamel of human third molars in vivo.

The amounts of firmly and loosely bound fluoride were determined in sound enamel of unerupted and erupted teeth which had been exposed in vivo for 1-16 yr to brushing at least once a day, and occasionally to mouth rinsing and the application of sealers. Enamel was sampled by an acid-etch procedure, and the fluoride levels were measured with an adapted fluoride ion-selective electrode. Unerupted enamel was etched significantly (p less than 0.05) deeper than erupted enamel up to a depth of at least 8 microns. Significant differences (p less than 0.05) were found between the mean enamel fluoride

Root caries: some clinical aspects.

This paper has discussed some aspects of root surface caries which are of special relevance to the clinician. Epidemiological studies have suggested that root caries is not inevitable after gingival recession, but a small number of patients show a propensity for development of new lesions. Several risk factors have been identified. Thorough prophylaxis is essential for accurate diagnosis of root caries lesions, and radiographs can identify lesions which would otherwise be difficult to detect. The activity of any particular lesion can only be evaluated by observation at successive examinations.

Relationship of total fluoride intake to beneficial effects and enamel fluorosis.

Recent studies indicate that the prevalence of very mild to moderate dental fluorosis, as classified by Dean, has increased relative to that found in earlier investigations. To date, fluoridated water, fluoride supplements, the diet, fluoride dentifrices, and other topical fluoride applications have been identified as sources of systemic fluoride. Recent evidence suggests that there is a strong association between mild to moderate enamel fluorosis and the use of fluoride supplements during early childhood, and that the presently recommended supplementation schedule for U.S. children above the

Oral fluoride reservoirs and the prevention of dental caries.

Current models for increasing the anti-caries effects of fluoride (F) agents emphasize the importance of maintaining a cariostatic concentration of F in oral fluids. The concentration of F in oral fluids is maintained by the release of this ion from bioavailable reservoirs on the teeth, oral mucosa and - most importantly, because of its association with the caries process - dental plaque. Oral F reservoirs appear to be of two types: (1) mineral reservoirs, in particular calcium fluoride or phosphate-contaminated 'calcium-fluoride-like' deposits; (2) biological reservoirs, in particular (with r

Facts and Fallacies of the Fluoride Controversy: A Contemporary Perspective.

Fluoride is a natural element recognized for its dental benefits. Fluoride prevents caries due to its antimicrobial activity, enhancing enamel resistance and promoting remineralization After decades of fluoridation of municipal water supplies to reduce dental caries, an intense debate has resurfaced regarding water fluoridation as a public health strategy to combat caries. This renewed discourse occurs against the backdrop of extensive data that clearly demonstrate the vital role of fluoride in caries prevention. Indeed, the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has stated water fluoridat

Regulation of aqueous flow by the adenylate cyclase receptor complex in the ciliary epithelium.

The answer to how the beta-adrenergic receptor mediates a fall in intraocular pressure has been elusive. Methods of measurement have not been refined sufficiently. The separate changes after adrenergic treatment frequently are small, and the tissue effects are multiple. On a molecular basis, stimulation of the beta-adrenergic receptor activates intracellular adenylate cyclase to produce increased cyclic adenosine monophosphate. Acting by different cell-receptor mechanisms, but nonetheless potent, nonadrenergic stimulators of adenylate cyclase in the ciliary epithelium, such as cholera toxin an
