Comparison of distal forelimb conformations between Japanese Black and Holstein-Friesian newborn calves.

Flexural and hyperextension deformities are congenital problems in calves. We, therefore, aimed to investigate the distal limb conformation in 1 day- and 28-day-old female Holstein-Friesian (HF) calves (n=21), male Japanese Black (JB) calves (n=15), and female JB calves (n=15). The claw angle of the forelimb dorsal claw wall in a standing position and recorded other parameters, including body weight, withers height, circumference of forelimbs, and flexor tendon thickness in the forelimbs, were measured and compared these between the three groups. At 1 day old, the mean claw angles were 51.1° i

Early postnatal maturation in vestibulospinal pathways involved in neck and forelimb motor control.

To assess the organization and functional development of vestibulospinal inputs to cervical motoneurons (MNs), we have used electrophysiology (ventral root and electromyographic [EMG] recording), calcium imaging, trans-synaptic rabies virus (RV) and conventional retrograde tracing and immunohistochemistry in the neonatal mouse. By stimulating the VIIIth nerve electrically while recording synaptically mediated calcium responses in MNs, we characterized the inputs from the three vestibulospinal tracts, the separate ipsilateral and contralateral medial vestibulospinal tracts (iMVST/cMVST) and the

Cervical root repair in adult rats after transection: recovery of forelimb motor function.

Functional recovery was achieved in rats after repairing the transected left sixth and seventh cervical roots. Intercostal nerves were used for reanastomosis between the transected roots and the spinal cord, and acidic fibroblast growth factor with fibrin glue was applied. Experimental rats showed relevant functional recovery of gait and grooming reflexes. Electromyography demonstrated less denervation and more regeneration. Horseradish peroxidase retrograde axonal tracing disclosed a statistically significant increase of motor neuron survival, suggesting that motor neuron survival was signifi

Radiographic findings in young llamas with forelimb valgus deformities: 28 cases (1980-1988).

Twenty-eight llamas with a mean age of 6.2 months had bilateral forelimb valgus deformities. The range of valgus deformity, as measured on a craniocaudal radiographic view, was 6 to 25 degrees, with a similar degree of deviation in each limb. Morphologic abnormalities in the distal portion of the radius and ulna were more prominent in the ulna and included metaphyseal and epiphyseal flaring, physeal ectasia, and metaphyseal sclerosis. Distal radial epiphyseal ectasia, and metaphyseal sclerosis. Distal radial epiphyseal wedging was believed to be secondary to the ulnar deformity. Radial bowing

Spatial Distribution of Cortical Output Zones Affecting Combinations of Forelimb Muscles in the Monkey.

1. We investigated the dimensions of output zones affecting specific combinations of forelimb muscles in the precentral "motor" cortex of macaque monkeys. Single-pulse intracortical microstimulation (S-ICMS) was used to evoke subthreshold effects in multiple wrist and finger muscles. S-ICMS consisted of 15 Hz stimulus trains at low intensity (5 μA) to avoid spread of effects due to temporal summation and to activate circumscribed foci of cortical cells in the bank of the precentral gyrus. 2. To detect subthreshold effects on active muscles, stimuli were delivered during wrist movements against

Adaptation strategies of the Icelandic horse with induced forelimb lameness at walk, trot and tölt.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Lameness assessment in the gaited Icelandic horse is complex. We aimed to describe their kinematic and temporal adaptation strategies in response to forelimb lameness at walk, trot and tölt. STUDY DESIGN: In vivo experiment. METHODS: Ten clinically non-lame Icelandic horses were measured before and after reversible forelimb lameness induction. Upper body and limb kinematics were measured using 11 inertial measurement units mounted on the poll, withers, pelvis (tubera sacrale) and all four limbs and hoofs (Equimoves®, 500 Hz). Horses were measured on a straight line

Clinical comparison of two techniques of brachial plexus block for forelimb surgery in dogs.

The objective of this study was to compare two different local anaesthesia techniques for intraoperative analgesia in dogs undergoing surgical procedures distal to the mid humeral diaphysis. Thirty-two dogs were divided into two groups: the US group received an ultrasound-guided brachial plexus block at the level of the first rib and the N group received a neurostimulation-guided paravertebral brachial plexus block. Ropivacaine 0.75% at 1.5mg/kg was injected in each case. Dogs were monitored during the surgical procedure, and rescue analgesia was administered whenever the heart rate, respirato

Regionalized Twist1 activity in the forelimb bud drives the morphogenesis of the proximal and preaxial skeleton.

Development of the mouse forelimb bud depends on normal Twist1 activity. Global loss of Twist1 function before limb bud formation stops limb development and loss of Twist1 throughout the mesenchyme after limb bud initiation leads to polydactyly, the ulnarization or loss of the radius and malformations and reductions of the shoulder girdle. Here we show that conditional deletion of Twist1 by Mesp1-Cre in the mesoderm that migrates into the anterior-proximal part of the forelimb bud results in the development of supernumerary digits and carpals, the acquisition of ulna-like characteristics by th

Morphofunctional Space of the Forelimb in Caraguatypotherium munozi (Notoungulata; Mesotheriidae): Insights Into Wrist-Powered Digging.

Understanding how extinct animals moved is a central goal in paleobiology, yet interpreting locomotor function from anatomy alone is complicated by convergent and divergent morphologies. One promising approach is the construction of morphofunctional spaces (MFSs), which integrate multiple biomechanical indices and comparative statistics to refine functional inference. This study investigates forelimb adaptations for digging in Caraguatypotherium munozi (Notoungulata, Mesotheriidae), a mid-sized Miocene notoungulate lacking extant analogs. We developed an MFS based on osteological measurements

Prevalence of radiographic changes in forelimb digits and metacarpophalangeal joints of South African endurance racehorses.

BACKGROUND: If the number of events alone is considered, endurance riding is the fastest growing and the second-most popular Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) discipline. Lameness is the most common cause of elimination from endurance races worldwide. To the authors' knowledge, no studies have been published investigating the prevalence of radiographic changes in the forelimb digits and metacarpophalangeal joints (MCP) of endurance racehorses in South Africa. OBJECTIVE: Investigate the prevalence of radiographic changes in the forelimb digits and MCP joints of South African endurance r

In vitro mechanical evaluation of three transfixation pin-cast constructs applied to equine forelimbs.

OBJECTIVE To compare strain at the bone-pin and cast-pin interfaces among 3 transfixation pin-cast constructs applied to equine forelimbs. ANIMALS 15 forelimbs from 15 adult horses. PROCEDURES Limbs were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 constructs. Centrally threaded positive-profile pins were used for all constructs, and the most distal pin was placed just proximal to the epicondyles of the third metacarpal bone. Construct 1 consisted of two 6.3-mm-diameter pins spaced 4 cm apart at 30° to each other. Construct 2 was the same as construct 1 except the pins were placed 5 cm apart. Construct 3 consi

Asymmetrical responses of skin blood flow in ischemic hindlimbs to electrical stimulation of the unilateral forelimb.

The regulation of skin blood flow (SBF) is primarily mediated by the sympathetic nervous system, but the effects of electrical stimulation (ES) of one limb on SBF in the other limbs remain unknown. The present study investigated the effects of unilateral forelimb ES on SBF in the bilateral hindlimbs in anesthetized rats. Bilateral hindlimb ischemia was induced by tourniquet application for 60min. After reperfusion for 24h, ES (3 or 125Hz) was applied to the upper one-fourth of the triceps brachii muscle of the left or right forelimb for 30min. Rats that did not receive ES were used as the cont

Record-Breaking Pain: The Largest Number and Variety of Forelimb Bone Maladies in a Theropod Dinosaur.

Bone abnormalities are common in theropod dinosaur skeletons, but before now no specimen was known with more than four afflicted bones of the pectoral girdle and/or forelimb. Here we describe the pathology of a specimen of the theropod dinosaur Dilophosaurus wetherilli with eight afflicted bones of the pectoral girdle and forelimb. On its left side the animal has a fractured scapula and radius and large fibriscesses in the ulna and the proximal thumb phalanx. On its right side the animal has abnormal torsion of the humeral shaft, bony tumors on the radius, a truncated distal articular surface

Resting Orientations of Dinosaur Scapulae and Forelimbs: A Numerical Analysis, with Implications for Reconstructions and Museum Mounts.

The inclination of the scapular blade and the resting pose of the forelimb in dinosaurs differ among reconstructions and among skeletal mounts. For most dinosaurian taxa, no attempt has previously been made to quantify the correct resting positions of these elements. Here, we used data from skeletons preserved in articulation to quantify the resting orientations of the scapula and forelimb in dinosaurs. Specimens were included in the study only if they were preserved lying on their sides; for each specimen the angle between forelimb bones at a given joint was included in the analysis only if t

Motor representations in the intact hemisphere of the rat are reduced after repetitive training of the impaired forelimb.

BACKGROUND: During recovery from a unilateral cortical stroke, spared cortical motor areas in the contralateral (intact) cerebral cortex are recruited. Preclinical studies have demonstrated that compensation with the less-impaired limb may have a detrimental inhibitory effect on the intact cortical hemisphere and could impede recovery of the more-impaired limb. However, evidence from detailed neurophysiological mapping studies in animal models is lacking. OBJECTIVES: The present study examines neurophysiological changes in the intact hemisphere of the rat following a unilateral ischemic infar
