Global distributions and environmental correlates of community leaf length and width in forests.

Leaf length and width are key dimensions of tree leaf size and can influence leaf boundary-layer development and leaf-environment heat exchange. However, their global patterns and environmental correlates remain poorly understood. By integrating tree leaf traits and community data, we mapped community leaf length and width and identified their environmental correlates in global forests. Both community leaf length and width decreased toward higher latitudes, although leaf width showed an additional peak at mid-latitudes. These asynchronous patterns contributed to geographic variation in leaf sh

A genus-labeled dataset of individual trees outside forests in Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

Detailed data on individual trees growing outside forests (TOF) are essential for arboriculture, biodiversity assessment, ecosystem services assessment, climate adaptation, and environmental health research. However, existing datasets are often incomplete and seldom provide taxonomic information beyond publicly managed trees in cities of Germany and other countries where maintaining a tree cadaster is a legal requirement. Here, we present for the first time a statewide dataset of individual TOF in the state of Baden-Württemberg, Germany, including tree locations, crown geometry, height, and ge

Impacts of climate-driven loss of giant kelp forests on local dive tourism.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Kelp forests provide myriad ecosystem services to human society, many of which are being eroded by climate-driven extreme events, before they have been measured. Here, we assess how dive tourism in giant kelp forests (Macrocystis pyrifera) has been impacted by marine heatwaves over three decades in southeast Tasmania. METHODS: Dive trip logs and business records were compiled from 1991-2021 from the Tasman Peninsula, Tasmania. Dives sites were georeferenced and matched to the dominant habitat (e.g. cave, wreck, sponge garden, kelp forest) for each dive site. The distribut

Invasive Strawberry Guava weakens avian frugivory in native forests of an oceanic island.

Frugivorous birds play a vital role in tropical forests by dispersing seeds and facilitating plant regeneration. The effectiveness of frugivores, including birds, as seed dispersers depends in part on their fruit removal rates. Although invasive alien plants (IAP) may influence the seed-dispersal role of birds in varied ways, few comparative field studies have dealt with avian frugivore-plant interactions, particularly in settings of advanced invasion on oceanic islands. We assess how IAP influences birds' attack rates on fruit models, to explore the ecological and conservation implications fo

Understanding predictors of binge-drinking behaviors among college students: a random forests analysis.

Objective: This study used a machine learning approach to examine how marijuana use, social connectedness, psychological distress, and demographic characteristics predicted binge drinking (BD) among 31,120 college students from the 2021-2022 Healthy Minds Study. Methods: A random forests analysis was used to assess the influence of predictors of binge drinking, and partial dependence plots and mixed-effects logistic regression were used to determine the direction of each predictor. Results: Findings indicated that marijuana use, older age, lower religiosity, depression, and diminished sense of

Recovery Following Harvesting of Ascophyllum nodosum Forests: Impacts on Populations and Canopy Composition.

Our overall aim was to assess the sustainability of exploitation of slow-growing, long-lived intertidal Ascophyllum nodosum forests. They have been mechanically harvested for almost 50 years in Breiðafjörður, Iceland, but there is a lack of long-term local research as various local factors can impact the recovery time of Ascophyllum. Post-harvest studies of the Ascophyllum stands are important for understanding recovery, particularly re-growth of fronds on individual plants and population structure of the resource to inform management. At four sites, we demarcated two control plots and one har

How ambient temperature rise affects mercury dynamics and its pools in secondary forests.

The forest ecosystem is a significant pool for capturing atmospheric mercury (Hg) deposition, with most Hg accumulating in forest soils. As secondary forests now dominate global forest cover, they are particularly sensitive to changes in ambient temperature. However, the impact of these changes on Hg dynamics in secondary forests remains poorly understood. Here, we quantified Hg inputs, outputs, and mass balances in two secondary forests in China, each with different ambient temperatures. We found that elevated ambient temperature (∼1.0℃) advanced the germination of leaves by 2-3 days and exte

Improving dengue fever predictions in Taiwan based on feature selection and random forests.

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever is a well-studied vector-borne disease in tropical and subtropical areas of the world. Several methods for predicting the occurrence of dengue fever in Taiwan have been proposed. However, to the best of our knowledge, no study has investigated the relationship between air quality indices (AQIs) and dengue fever in Taiwan. RESULTS: This study aimed to develop a dengue fever prediction model in which meteorological factors, a vector index, and AQIs were incorporated into different machine learning algorithms. A total of 805 meteorological records from 2013 to 2015 were

Modelling tick bite risk by combining random forests and count data regression models.

The socio-economic and demographic changes that occurred over the past 50 years have dramatically expanded urban areas around the globe, thus bringing urban settlers in closer contact with nature. Ticks have trespassed the limits of forests and grasslands to start inhabiting green spaces within metropolitan areas. Hence, the transmission of pathogens causing tick-borne diseases is an important threat to public health. Using volunteered tick bite reports collected by two Dutch initiatives, here we present a method to model tick bite risk using human exposure and tick hazard predictors. Our meth

Learning and combining image neighborhoods using random forests for neonatal brain disease classification.

It is challenging to characterize and classify normal and abnormal brain development during early childhood. To reduce the complexity of heterogeneous data population, manifold learning techniques are increasingly applied, which find a low-dimensional representation of the data, while preserving all relevant information. The neighborhood definition used for constructing manifold representations of the population is crucial for preserving the similarity structure and it is highly application dependent. The recently proposed neighborhood approximation forests learn a neighborhood structure in a

Nitrogen dynamics in subtropical fringe and basin mangrove forests inferred from stable isotopes.

Mangroves exhibit low species richness compared to other tropical forests, but great structural and functional diversity. Aiming to contribute to a better understanding of the functioning of mangrove forests, we investigated nitrogen (N) dynamics in two physiographic types of mangroves (fringe and basin forests) in southeastern Brazil. Because fringe forests are under great influence of tidal flushing we hypothesized that these forests would exhibit higher N cycling rates in sediment and higher N losses to the atmosphere compared to basin forests. We quantified net N mineralization and nitrifi

Extra tree forests for sub-acute ischemic stroke lesion segmentation in MR sequences.

BACKGROUND: To analyse the relationship between structure and (dys-)function of the brain after stroke, accurate and repeatable segmentation of the lesion area in magnetic resonance (MR) images is required. Manual delineation, the current gold standard, is time consuming and suffers from high intra- and inter-observer differences. NEW METHOD: A new approach is presented for the automatic and reproducible segmentation of sub-acute ischemic stroke lesions in MR images in the presence of other pathologies. The proposition is based on an Extra Tree forest framework for voxel-wise classification a

Foliage shedding in deciduous forests lifts up long-distance seed dispersal by wind.

Seed terminal velocity and release height are recognized as key biotic determinants of long-distance dispersal (LDD) of seeds by wind. Yet, potential determinants at the ecosystem level, such as seasonal dynamics in foliage density characterizing many deciduous forests, have received much less attention. We integrated detailed field observations and experiments with a mechanistic wind dispersal model to assess how seasonal variation in foliage density, estimated by leaf-area index (LAI), affects LDD in deciduous forests. We found that the model, previously shown to accurately predict seed disp

Fourfold increase in fragmentation from road expansion in Siberian intact forests since 2000.

Road development is a major driver of forest degradation worldwide, accelerating habitat fragmentation, biodiversity loss and carbon emissions. Although these consequences have been documented in tropical forests, the spatiotemporal dynamics and ecological impacts of road expansion in boreal intact forest landscapes (IFLs) remain poorly understood, particularly for the central-eastern Siberian IFLs, an ~1.71 million km2 wilderness and carbon sink. To address this gap, we analysed 20,480 Landsat satellite images from 2000 to 2023, and found a 1.6-fold increase in road area and length across thi

War fires promote short-term alien plant colonization in eastern Ukraine's pine forests.

Russian full-scale military invasion has driven multiple ecosystem disturbances in the arid zone of eastern Ukraine, including fires of varying severity. Local forests, largely dominated by Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), were planted as uniform monocultures in a region where low-density woodlands had historically prevailed. However, little is known about how military-related fires affect successional trajectories in disturbed pine forests. We conducted fully digital surveys of vascular plant composition using under-canopy imagery collected by an unmanned aerial vehicle. Transects were estab

How Mixed Are Production-Oriented Planted Forests? A Global Review and Classification Approach.

Mixed planted forests (MPF) are increasingly recognized for their potential to reconcile forest productivity with biodiversity conservation and ecosystem services, such as climate adaptation and mitigation. They can be mixed in multiple ways, but the lack of a standardized procedure to compare mixture levels has hindered the exploration of their potential benefits, rendering the term "mixed" too generic to support meaningful comparisons across studies or informed decision-making. This study aims to (i) conduct a global literature review of the characteristics of MPF established for production

Protecting tropical forests is more cost-effective for biodiversity and climate than restoration.

Halting deforestation and promoting restoration are at the core of strategies to confront the biodiversity and climate crises in tropical forests. Avoiding forest disturbances is also critically important but has received far less attention, and there is a lack of clarity about the relative cost-effectiveness of these three interventions. We compare the biodiversity and carbon benefits and costs associated with each intervention, comparing observed and counterfactual outcomes based on in-depth field assessments and high-resolution remote sensing in the Brazilian Amazon deforestation frontier.
