Recent advances in occupational health research in Korea.

Korea has a short history in research on occupational health like as short history of industrialization. During last four decades, however, Korea has experienced what developed countries have experienced for more than a hundred year. Research on occupational health in Korea has also drastically developed. Since industrialization in 1970s, many workers were exposed to hazardous working environment and suffered from occupational accidents and diseases. The main research topics were pneumoconiosis, noise-induced hearing loss and some chemical poisoning. However, improving working condition was no

From progress to precarity: how funding shifts threaten HIV gains in Nigeria.

Sustained financing remains critical to the global HIV response, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where external aid supports treatment and prevention programs. Recent shifts in donor priorities have raised concerns about the continuity of essential HIV services. Using Nigeria as a case study, this paper examines how declining international HIV funding threatens HIV control efforts through increased transmission risk, treatment interruption, and strain on fragile health systems. Available evidence indicates that funding reductions have disrupted community-based HIV test

Graduate Medical Education in Otolaryngology: Making Dollars and Sense of Reform.

Graduate medical education (GME) is funded by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services through both direct and indirect payments. In recent years, stakeholders have raised concerns about the growth of spending on GME and distribution of payment among hospitals. Key stakeholders have proposed reforms to reduce GME funding such as adjustments to statutory payment formulas and absolute caps on annual payments per resident. Otolaryngology departmental leadership should understand the potential effects of proposed reforms, which could have significant implications for the short-term financial

Beyond eugenics: the forgotten scandal of hybridizing humans and apes.

This paper examines the available evidence on one of the most radical ideas in the history of eugenics and utopianism. In the mid-1920s, the zoology professor Ilia Ivanov submitted to the Soviet government a project for hybridizing humans and apes by means of artificial insemination. He received substantial financing and organized expeditions to Africa to catch apes for his experiments. His project caused an international sensation. The American Association for the Advancement of Atheism announced its fund-raising campaign to support Ivanov's project but gave it a scandalously racist interpret

[Epidemiology of bone fluorosis of hydrotelluric origin].

Although endemic fluorosis occurs in many countries, epidemiological studies have been limited by funding problems, a lack of awareness of the public health impact of the disease, and the absence of inexpensive defluoridation methods. The effects of fluorides on human bone are reviewed and the methodological problems raised by epidemiological studies of endemic skeletal fluorosis are discussed.

COVID-19 and Corporate Finance

We distill evidence about the effects of COVID-19 on companies. Stock price reactions to the shock differed greatly across firms, depending on their resilience to social distancing, financial flexibility, and corporate culture. The same characteristics affected the response of firms' sales, employment, and asset growth. Despite the shock, firms expanded their balance sheets and liquidity by raising funds from banks, bonds, and equity markets. While listed firms reduced their leverage, unlisted ones, especially small and medium enterprises, increased it. Government support programs helped firms

Converting donor dependence to domestic ownership: The realignment of tuberculosis financing for sustainability.

The financing of tuberculosis (TB) programs in high burden countries (HBCs) requires an overhaul. Donor funding for TB has often bypassed domestic channels, decreased the incentive for engagement between national TB programs and national budget holders, and provided minimal assistance to improve domestic TB budgeting processes. The result is local budgeting and financial management processes that do not efficiently and effectively meet both curative and public health TB needs. Meanwhile, donor TB funding has become less certain. Our analysis suggests that, in almost three quarters of high TB b

Better care must be part of the conversation on dying.

As debate around assisted dying continues, the longstanding pressures facing palliative, end-of-life and social care cannot be ignored. With concerns over funding, capacity and access repeatedly raised, the author questions whether healthcare services can properly support people in living well and ensure those approaching the end of life receive the care and dignity they deserve.

Re-Engineering Alzheimer Clinical Trials: Global Alzheimer's Platform Network.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) drug development is costly, time-consuming, and inefficient. Trial site functions, trial design, and patient recruitment for trials all require improvement. The Global Alzheimer Platform (GAP) was initiated in response to these challenges. Four GAP work streams evolved in the US to address different trial challenges: 1) registry-to-cohort web-based recruitment; 2) clinical trial site activation and site network construction (GAP-NET); 3) adaptive proof-of-concept clinical trial design; and 4) finance and fund raising. GAP-NET proposes to establish a standardized networ

African leaders and regional institutions need to take the bull by the horns: a perspective on the impact of the 2025 funding cuts to malaria programmes.

Despite global malaria programmes already operating within resource constraints, 2025 saw a significant decrease in funding following the US government's termination of most of its global health programmes, as well as the decline in development aid spending by the UK, France, Germany, Canada, Switzerland, and other countries. The disruption of funding was sudden, with most African countries lacking adequate contingency plans. This, despite most of the malaria burden being in Africa (94% of 263 million cases in 2023), accounting for a reduction in gross domestic product of up to 1.3% annually,

Trends of sources of clinical research funding from 1990 to 2020: a meta-epidemiological study.

Evidence has raised concerns regarding the association between funding sources and doubtful data. Our main outcome was to analyze trends on funding sources in articles published from 1990 to 2020 in the more influential journals of internal and general medicine. In this meta-epidemiological study, we included peer-reviewed studies from the 10 highest impact journals in general and internal medicine published between January 1990 and February 2020 based on published original research according to the 2018 InCites Journal of Citation Reports, these consisted of the following: The New England Jou

Does in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment provide good value for money? A cost-benefit analysis.

BACKGROUND: Using traditional health technology assessment (HTA) outcome metrics, such as quality-adjusted life-years, to assess fertility treatments raises considerable methodological challenges because the objective of fertility treatments is to create new life rather than extend, save, or improve health-related quality of life. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to develop a novel cost-benefit framework to assess value for money of publicly funded IVF treatment; to determine the number of cost-beneficial treatment cycles for women of different ages; and to perform an incremental cost-ben

Ethical dilemmas in current planning for polio eradication.

Intensification of polio eradication efforts worldwide raises concerns about costs and benefits for poor countries. A major argument for global funding is the high benefit-cost ratio of eradication; however, financial benefits are greatest for rich countries. By contrast, the greatest costs are borne by poor countries; the Pan American Health Organization has estimated that host countries bore 80% of costs for polio eradication in the Americas. The 1988 World Health Assembly resolution setting up the Polio Eradication Initiative carried the proviso that programs should strengthen health infras

Statewide efforts to address the opioid epidemic: Results from a national survey of single state agencies.

BACKGROUND: Single State Agencies (SSAs) are at the forefront of efforts to address the nation's opioid epidemic, responsible for allocating billions of dollars in federal, state, and local funds to ensure service quality, promote best practices, and expand access to care. Federal expenditures to SSAs have more than tripled since the early years of the epidemic, yet, it is unclear what initiatives SSAs have undertaken to address the crisis and how they are financing these efforts. METHODS: This study used data from an internet-based survey of SSAs, conducted by the University of Chicago Surve

A simple and flexible model to calculate annual merit raises for health sciences faculty.

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to develop and implement a simple and flexible mathematical model to generate merit-based salary increases as a percentage of the faculty base salaries, with the flexibility to choose the range of merit raises. METHODS: Annual faculty performance scores, faculty base salaries, and available salary increase pool were used in a relatively simple linear model to determine the individual faculty merit raises as a percentage of their base salary. The core model allows the selection of a slope value that determines how steeply the merit raise changes with a

Civil society and perilous medicine in Africa: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Conflict has not been a public health priority for governmental organisations, and evidence on civil society organisation (CSO) contributions to the issue is limited. The present study synthesised the available evidence on the role of CSOs in conflict and health in Africa. METHODS: We employed a systematic review using a systematic search of MEDLINE, PubMed, CINHAL, Web of Science and Scopus for English written articles between 1 January 2000 to 31 December 2023. The four concepts for the search included CSO or non-governmental organisation (NGO), conflict, health and Africa. RES

Workers' compensation insurance and occupational injuries.

OBJECTIVES: Although compensation for occupational injuries and diseases is guaranteed in almost all nations, countries vary greatly with respect to how they organize workers' compensation systems. In this paper, we focus on three aspects of workers' compensation insurance in Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries - types of systems, employers' funding mechanisms, and coverage for injured workers - and their impacts on the actual frequencies of occupational injuries and diseases. METHODS: We estimated a panel data fixed effect model with cross-country OECD and

Establishing resources and increasing awareness to advance research on Dentatorubral-pallidoluysian atrophy toward a treatment: a patient organization perspective.

Dentatorubral-pallidoluysian atrophy (DRPLA) is an ultra-rare neurodegenerative disorder characterized by ataxia, cognitive decline, myoclonus, chorea, epilepsy, and psychiatric manifestations. This article delves into the multifaceted efforts of CureDRPLA, a family-driven non-profit organization, in advancing research, raising awareness, and developing therapeutic strategies for this complex condition. CureDRPLA's inception in 2019 led to the establishment of the DRPLA Research Program, and since then have funded research projects to advance the understanding of DRPLA including but not limite
