A subthalamo-parabrachial glutamatergic pathway is involved in stress-induced self-grooming in mice.

Excessive self-grooming is an important behavioral phenotype of the stress response in rodents. Elucidating the neural circuit that regulates stress-induced self-grooming may suggest potential treatment to prevent maladaptation to stress that is implicated in emotional disorders. Stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) has been found to induce strong self-grooming. In this study we investigated the role of the STN and a related neural circuit in mouse stress-related self-grooming. Body-restraint and foot-shock stress-induced self-grooming models were established in mice. We showed that bo

Opioid modulation of facial itch- and pain-related responses and grooming behavior in rats.

Intradermal facial injections of pruritogens or algogens elicit distinct behavioral hindlimb scratch or forelimb wiping responses in rodents. We systematically investigated the parameters and opioid modulation of these evoked behaviors and spontaneous facial grooming in rats. Serotonin (5-HT) elicited hindlimb scratch bouts with few wipes. Scratching was attenuated by the µ-opiate antagonist naltrexone but not morphine. In contrast, cheek injection of mustard oil (allyl-isothiocyanate (AITC)) elicited ipsilateral forelimb wipes but little hindlimb scratching. AITC-evoked wiping was significant

Implementation of action sequences by a neostriatal site: a lesion mapping study of grooming syntax.

The neostriatum and its connections control the sequential organization of action ("action syntax") as well as simpler aspects of movement. This study focused on sequential organization of rodent grooming. Grooming syntax provides an opportunity to study how neural systems coordinate natural patterns of serial order. The most stereotyped of these grooming patterns, a "syntactic chain," has a particularly stereotyped order that recurs thousands of times more often than could occur by chance. The purpose of the present study was to identify the crucial site within the striatopallidal system wher

Pathological grooming: Evidence for a single factor behind trichotillomania, skin picking and nail biting.

Although trichotillomania (TTM), skin picking (SP), and nail biting (NB) have been receiving growing scientific attention, the question as to whether these disorders can be regarded as separate entities or they are different manifestations of the same underlying tendency is unclear. Data were collected online in a community survey, yielding a sample of 2705 participants (66% women, mean age: 29.1, SD: 8.6). Hierarchical factor analysis was used to identify a common latent factor and the multiple indicators and multiple causes (MIMIC) modelling was applied to test the predictive effect of borde

Offense Processes of Online Sexual Grooming and Abuse of Children Via Internet Communication Platforms.

The aim of the present study was to provide an inclusive and realistic account of the offense processes of naturally occurring, sexually exploitative interactions between offenders and victims that took place via Internet communication platforms, and develop an offense process diagram of online sexual grooming and abuse. Five case series, comprising 29 transcripts of 22 interactions, were analyzed using the qualitative approach of thematic analysis. Police reports were reviewed for descriptive and case-specific information. The five offenders were men aged between 27 and 52 years ( M = 33.6, S

Correlation between pubic hair grooming and STIs: results from a nationally representative probability sample.

OBJECTIVE: STIs are the most common infections among adults. Concurrently, pubic hair grooming is prevalent. Small-scale studies have demonstrated a relationship between pubic hair grooming and STIs. We aim to examine this relationship in a large sample of men and women. DESIGN: We conducted a probability survey of US residents aged 18-65 years. The survey ascertained self-reported pubic hair grooming practices, sexual behaviours and STI history. We defined extreme grooming as removal of all pubic hair more than 11 times per year and high-frequency grooming as daily/weekly trimming. Cutaneous

Beak condition drives abundance and grooming-mediated competitive asymmetry in a poultry ectoparasite community.

OBJECTIVE: Ornithonyssus sylviarum (northern fowl mite) and Menacanthus stramineus (chicken body louse) are key poultry pests currently controlled by exclusion or pesticide application. We studied how host beak condition affected their populations over time and how the lice and mites might interact on a host. METHODS: Beak-trimmed or beak-intact white leghorn hens were infested initially with either mites or lice and subsequently challenged using the alternate ectoparasite species (reciprocal transfer), while other hens harboured only the initial ectoparasite species. RESULTS: Beak-trimmed h

Symptom profiles in pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD): the effects of comorbid grooming conditions.

This study sought to examine possible differences in phenomenological features and/or symptom severity of children diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and a comorbid grooming condition (i.e., skin picking and trichotillomania). A total of 202 children receiving a primary diagnosis of OCD were classified into two distinct groups: (1) OCD alone (n=154) and (2) OCD plus a comorbid grooming condition (OCD+grooming; n=48). Analyses revealed that those children presenting with a comorbid grooming condition demonstrated different symptom profiles than those with OCD alone. In addition,

Matrilineal distribution of louse egg-handling techniques during grooming in free-ranging Japanese macaques.

Grooming behavior of which the primary function appears to be the removal of lice on other (Tanaka and Takefushi [1993] Anthropological Science 101:187-193) was studied in Japanese maceques at Jigokudani Monkey Park, Japan, June 1990-July 1993. Several louse egg-handling techniques used during grooming were identified (with differences in efficiency) in a free-ranging group. In the low-ranking maternal lineages, the distribution of these techniques is quite homogeneous, suggesting social transmission with goal emulation (one form of social learning) based on maternal kin. However, there is con

Sexual grooming processes carried out by offending rabbis toward religious men and their families.

BACKGROUND: Research regarding sexual grooming in cases of sexual abuse by religious authorities (SARA) is limited, despite the assumption that many SARA cases go unreported. To the best of our knowledge there is no research regarding sexual grooming committed by rabbis who sexually abused Israeli Jewish religious men. OBJECTIVE: The present study examined how Israeli religious SARA victims and their family members experienced sexual grooming carried out by offending rabbis. METHODS: Based on a constructivist-phenomenological paradigm, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with

Understanding online grooming: An interpretative phenomenological analysis of adolescents' offline meetings with adult perpetrators.

BACKGROUND: It is the norm for adolescents to form friendships online but connecting with strangers poses risks of online grooming. Adult perpetrators take advantage of the internet's anonymity and accessibility to befriend and groom young people for sexual abuse. Much of the existing research has focused on the offender's perspective and grooming tactics, while extensive studies on victim profiles have focused on risk factors and young people's vulnerabilities to online grooming. OBJECTIVE: This research takes an in-depth look into grooming processes from the perspective of the adolescent vi

Underwater shear-based grooming of marine biofouling using a non-contact Bernoulli pad device.

The biofouling removal ability of a shear-based device was tested on two submerged surface types, Garolite G-10 and Intersleek 1100SR. Each surface was groomed at four frequencies along with a control group. The seven-week grooming study was conducted in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island. The Bernoulli pad device uses confined radial outflow to generate both surface-normal forces to grip the submerged surface and shear stress to groom the surface without contact. An image-processing algorithm was developed and used to assess the effectiveness of the various grooming protocols, along with direct m

Association between pubic hair grooming and prevalent sexually transmitted infection among female university students.

Recent findings have suggested an association between pubic hair grooming and self-reported history of sexually transmitted infection (STI), specifically gonococcal infection (GC), chlamydial infection (CT), or human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). We evaluated the association between self-reported extreme grooming and laboratory-confirmed prevalence of GC/CT. Between April 2017 and April 2018, we enrolled English-speaking, adult, female students at a large, Midwestern university who presented on-campus for STI testing. Participants completed a questionnaire on demographics and sexual and groomi

Making friends in an asymmetric game: the establishment of male-female grooming exchanges in vervet monkeys.

An important challenge for individuals of group-living species is to build cooperative relationships with new partners. One famous strategy for doing so is 'raise the stakes', proposing low initial investments that increase if the partner matches these investments in a series of exchanges. Contrarily, the 'all in' strategy predicts high initial investment that may be maintained, but downregulated if not fully matched. We tested these predictions on grooming exchanges between wild male-female vervet monkeys, a species with regular male dispersal. Contrary to model predictions, we found uneven i

Effects of pubic hair grooming on women's sexual health: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Pubic hair grooming involves the partial or complete removal of pubic hair, and it is a common practice among men and women. Grooming is more prevalent in women, who employ various methods such as shaving, waxing and laser removal. However, it is associated with variable rates of post-grooming adverse outcomes including lacerations and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first systematic review and meta-analysis comparing women's sexual health outcomes between those who groom and those who don't. METHODS: We followed the MOOSE guidelin

Electrophysiological Characterization of Cerebellar Responses during Exploration and Grooming Behaviors in a Rat Model of Parkinsonism.

Parkinson's disease is currently a global public health challenge due to the rapid growth of aging populations. To understand its pathophysiology is necessary to study the functional correlation between the basal ganglia (BG) and the cerebellum, which are involved in motor control. Herein, we explored multiunit electrical activity (MUA) in the cerebellum of rats with induced Parkinsonism as a result of lesions following bilateral placement of electrodes and passing of current in the ventrolateral striatum (VLS). In one control group, the electrodes descended without electrical current, and ano

Aberrant self-grooming as early marker of motor dysfunction in a rat model of Huntington's disease.

In the study of neurodegenerative diseases, rodent models provide experimentally accessible systems to study multiple pathogenetic aspects. The identification of early and robust behavioural changes is crucial to monitoring disease progression and testing potential therapeutic strategies in animals. Consistent experimental data support the translational value of rodent self-grooming as index of disturbed motor functions and perseverative behaviour patterns in different rodent models of brain disorders. Huntington's disease (HD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder, characterized by seve

I Knew It All Along: The Sexual Grooming Behaviors of Child Molesters and the Hindsight Bias.

Recent high profile cases of child sexual abuse have increased interest in the grooming behaviors of child molesters and why these offenders are not identified sooner. This study examined one possible explanation--the hindsight bias. Five hundred and twenty-six undergraduates were randomly assigned to read one of six vignettes and asked to rate the likelihood the person in the story is a child molester. Results supported the presence of the hindsight bias, with participants who were given outcome information overestimating the likelihood they would have predicted that the person was a child mo

Distinct grooming patterns induced by intracerebroventricular injection of CRH, TRH and LHRH in male rats.

This paper reports the effects on grooming, related behaviors and levels of anxiety induced by the hypophysiotropic peptides corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH, 1 microgram, 0.2 nmol, icv), thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH, 100 micrograms, 275 nmol, icv) and luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH, 1.5 micrograms, 1.3 nmol, icv) administered into the lateral ventricle of the brain (icv) of adult male rats of a Holtzman-derived colony (N = 15, each group). CRH induced an increase in total grooming scores, whereas LHRH, TRH and vehicle had no effect. CRH strongly increased face and head
