BACKGROUND: During constant speed rotation of the body, head rotation about an axis other than the axis of rotation of the body (i.e., Coriolis is stimulation) induces motion sickness.
HYPOTHESES: The position of the body relative to the center of rotation will influence the sickness caused by Coriolis stimulation; the direction of head movement will not affect the sickness caused by Coriolis stimulation.
METHOD: There were 24 seated subjects (12 male, 12 female) who made 30 degrees pitch motions of the head every 30 s while rotating about a vertical axis at 10 r.p.m. on a turntable at two s

The body sway of the patients with unilateral and bilateral Ménière's disease was recorded by using a cephalograph and a stabilometer, and analyzed with a microcomputer. The results show that the locus type, locus area and locus length traced by the head's center and the body's center of gravity are useful parameters of the body sway, representing the characteristics of peripheral vestibular disorders. The noteworthy characteristics are shown in the right-and-left type and forward-and-backward type in statokinesigram, in the significant differences of locus area and/or locus length between the

Head movement-dependent oscillopsia (HMDO) with peripheral vestibular, brainstem and cerebellar lesions is reviewed. The differentiation of this kind of oscillopsia is based mainly on clinical grounds. HMDO with bilateral abolition of caloric responses, and in the absence of disease of the central nervous system, is due to bilateral vestibular disease. HMDO in patients with internuclear ophthalmoplegia and other brainstem signs is probably due to a lesion of VOR pathways in or near the medial longitudinal fasciculus. The occurrence of HMDO with ataxia of gait and cerebellar eye movement disord

The present study examined the kinematics and biomechanical parameters of the head of a person thrown forward by the judo technique 'Seoi-nage'. A judo expert threw an anthropomorphic test device (the POLAR dummy) five times. Kinematics data were obtained with a high-speed digital video camera. Linear and angular accelerations of the head were measured by accelerometers mounted at the center of gravity of the dummy's head. When Seoi-nage was performed, the dummy fell forward accompanied by contacting the anterior parietal regions of the head to the tatami, and the linear and angular accelerati

RATIONALE: The indirect-acting dopamine agonist amphetamine induces in rats, motor stereotypies that have served as the primary behavioral end points in studies related to schizophrenia, drug abuse, and L-dopa-induced dyskinesias. Despite the experimental importance of this rodent response to this drug, little is known about the rhythmic character of the behavior and how such rhythms change (or sensitize) in response to repeated treatment with amphetamine.
OBJECTIVE: To address this lack of quantitative information, the rhythms of focused stereotypies (characterized by a lack of locomotion an

Following a 30-minute exposure to an unusual motor strategy called "Torso Rotation" (TR), the signs and symptoms of motion sickness appear along with perceptual illusions during movement, gaze and postural instability, and a significantly reduced vestibulo-ocular response (VOR) gain. With repeated exposure to TR, motion sickness symptoms disappear and gaze instability seems reduced, but without any concomitant change in VOR gain. Is the reduction in gaze instability a perceptual illusion or a real, measurable phenomenon? Velocity gain (eye velocity/ head velocity) was evaluated during voluntar

INTRODUCTION: Cervical dystonia is defined by excessive contraction of muscles that produce abnormal postures and movements of the head, neck, and sometimes the shoulders. Many affected individuals also have pain, local muscle hypertrophy, and/or abnormally increased EMG activity. However, abnormal movements are considered the defining feature.
CASES: Three cases are described suggesting that some features of cervical dystonia may occur without abnormal movements. In these cases, the only clinical features are pain, local muscle hypertrophy, or abnormal EMG activity. These features may occur

HYPOTHESIS: Prosthetic electrical stimulation can evoke compensatory eye and head movement despite vestibular implant electrode insertion occurring years after prior labyrinthectomy.
BACKGROUND: Vestibular implants sense head rotation and directly stimulate the vestibular nerve, bypassing damaged end organs. Animal research and current clinical trials have demonstrated the efficacy of this approach. However, candidacy criteria for vestibular implants currently require presence of a patent labyrinth in the candidate ear and at least aidable hearing in the opposite ear, thus excluding patients

The vestibular system is vital for maintaining balance and stabilizing gaze and vestibular damage causes impaired postural and gaze control. Here we examined the effects of vestibular loss and subsequent compensation on head motion kinematics during voluntary behavior. Head movements were measured in vestibular schwannoma patients before, and then 6 weeks and 6 months after surgical tumor removal, requiring sectioning of the involved vestibular nerve (vestibular neurectomy). Head movements were recorded in six dimensions using a small head-mounted sensor while patients performed the Functional

In some patients suffering from acute unilateral peripheral vestibular deficit, the head impulse test performed towards the affected side reveals the typical catch-up saccade in the horizontal plane, and an oblique, mostly vertical, upward catch-up saccade after the rotation of the head towards the healthy side. Three cases are reported herein, which have been studied using slow motion video analysis of the eye movements captured by a high-speed webcam (90 fps). The clinical evidence is discussed and a pathophysiological explanation is proposed, consisting in a selective hypofunction of the su

Grass-cutting ants (Atta vollenweideri) carry leaf fragments several times heavier and longer than the workers themselves over considerable distances back to their nest. Workers transport fragments in an upright, slightly backwards-tilted position. To investigate how they maintain stability and control the carried fragment's position, we measured head and fragment positions from video recordings. Load-transporting ants often fell over, demonstrating the biomechanical difficulty of this behavior. Long fragments were carried at a significantly steeper angle than short fragments of the same mass.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Few studies have attempted to develop clinical predictors for cervical dystonia (CD) aiming at progression of the dystonic movement.
METHOD: We retrospectively evaluated 73 patients with primary CD who underwent treatment with Botulinum toxin type-A (BTX-A). The patients were assembled in two groups according to the spread of dystonia during follow-up: spreading and non-spreading CD. We performed a binary logistic regression model using spreading of cervical dystonia as dependent variable aiming to find covariates which increase the risk of spreading.
RESULTS: Our log

A 57-year-old woman developed muscular stiffness and painful cramps, which were relieved by administration of dantrolene sodium. Her serum level of antibodies to glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) was markedly elevated and continuous muscular activities were observed on resting surface EMG. These features were compatible with those in stiff-person syndrome (SPS). She was found to have thymoma on CT scan. Immediately after thymomectomy, which was histologically diagnosed as a benign hyperplasia, she developed head retraction reflex-like movements evoked by sensory stimulation to the face, which

107 patients suffering from axial dyskinesias (torticollis and torsion dystonia) were observed at our clinic over a period of 10 years. In 15 patients, stereotactic lesions involving the head-turning bundle at the caudatocapsular level, which mediates forced adversive movements, were performed. In 70% good to excellent results were confirmed. However, differences between forced adversive movements and torticollis were identified. There are striking motor and motivational similarities between torticollis and ritualized fixed action patterns of low-ranking subjects. The aetiology of axial dyskin

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The purpose of this case report is to highlight the Head Shake (HS) Sensory Organization Test (SOT) (HS-SOT) as an outcome measure in the rehabilitation of a patient with head movement provoked symptoms of dysequilibrium. Despite complaints of imbalance and head movement provoked symptoms, there are individuals who are able to score within normal limits on measures such as the SOT and Berg Functional Balance Test. The HS modification to the SOT can objectively identify abnormal vestibular inputs associated with head motion and maintaining balance.
METHODS: This case re

The most important cues for sound-source localization in normal hearing (NH) individuals are interaural time differences (ITDs) and interaural level differences (ILDs), information that is lacking in patients with single-sided deafness (SSD). Findings from previous studies suggested that longer duration of deafness correlated with better ability of sound localization despite the sustained absence of these binaural cues in SSD patients. To investigate the role of head movements in the compensatory mechanisms of sound localization, we performed sound localization tests for patients with congenit

The increasing prevalence of behavioral disorders in children is of growing concern within the medical community. Recognising the significance of early identification and intervention for atypical behaviors, there is a consensus on their pivotal role in improving outcomes. Due to inadequate facilities and a shortage of medical professionals with specialized expertise, traditional diagnostic methods have been unable to effectively address the rising incidence of behavioral disorders. Hence, there is a need to develop automated approaches for the diagnosis of behavioral disorders in children, to

This study aimed to examine the effects of head movement restriction on relative angles and their derivatives using the stepwise segmentation approach during lifting and lowering tasks. Ten healthy men lifted and lowered a box using two styles (stoop and squat), with two loads (i.e. 10% and 20% of body weight); they performed these tasks with two instructed head postures [(1) Flexing the neck to keep contact between chin and chest over the task cycle; (2) No instruction, free head posture]. The neck flexion significantly affected the flexion angle of all segments of the spine and specifically

BACKGROUND: Craniofacial microsomia (CFM) is a congenital condition associated with malformations of the bone and soft tissue of the face and the facial nerves, all of which have the potential to impair facial expressiveness. We investigated whether CFM-related variation in expressiveness is evident as early as infancy.
METHODS: Participants were 113 ethnically diverse 13-month-old infants (n = 63 cases with CFM and n = 50 unaffected matched controls). They were observed in 2 emotion induction tasks designed to elicit positive and negative effects. Facial and head movement was automatically m
