Effect of foam densification and impact velocity on the performance of a football helmet using computational modeling.

The NFL recently released validated helmet-impact models to study the performance of currently used helmets. This study used the model of a Riddell Speed Classic helmet to determine the influence of the properties of protective foam padding on acceleration and deformation at two common impact locations to cause concussions. The performance of the helmet was measured before and after manipulating the material properties of the protective foam liner material using FEA software. The densification strain was adjusted by using the scale factor tool in LS-DYNA to create four material categories - so

The human cost of allowing unhelmeted motorcycling in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: This study's objective was to estimate the number of motorcyclist fatalities attributable to laws that allow unhelmeted riding in the United States since 1976. METHOD: Counts of helmeted and unhelmeted motorcyclist fatalities were used to estimate population-level helmet use under all-rider helmet laws and in the absence of such laws. The number of lives that could have been saved if helmet use in states that allowed unhelmeted riding was equal to helmet use in states with all-rider helmet laws was estimated for each year and summed over the study years. RESULTS: If all states

The prevalence of helmet use in motorcyclists around the world: a systematic review and meta-analysis of 5,006,476 participants.

Road traffic injuries present a significant public health burden, especially in developing countries. This systematic review and meta-analysis synthesized global evidence on motorcycle helmet use prevalence by including 299 records across 249 articles involving 5,006,476 participants from 1982 to 2022. The findings revealed a declining trend in helmet use prevalence over the past four decades, with an overall prevalence of 48.71%. The meta-regression analysis did not find any statistically significant change in the overall prevalence. Subgroup analysis showed higher helmet use prevalence in ob

How Well Do Popular Bicycle Helmets Protect from Different Types of Head Injury?

Bicycle helmets are designed to protect against skull fractures and associated focal brain injuries, driven by helmet standards. Another type of head injury seen in injured cyclists is diffuse brain injuries, but little is known about the protection provided by bicycle helmets against these injuries. Here, we examine the performance of modern bicycle helmets in preventing diffuse injuries and skull fractures under impact conditions that represent a range of real-world incidents. We also investigate the effects of helmet technology, price, and mass on protection against these pathologies. 30 mo

Comparing Impact and Concussion Risk in Leatherhead and Modern Football and Hockey Helmets.

BACKGROUND: Improvements in the modern helmet have demonstrated beneficial effects in reducing concussion risk in football players. However, previous studies yield conflicting results regarding the protective quality of leatherhead football helmets. There is limited research comparing the modern football helmet and the modern hockey helmet, with one previous study demonstrating the football helmet as providing a lower risk of concussion. OBJECTIVE: To compare the head acceleration produced in a leatherhead football helmet vs a modern football helmet vs a modified modern football helmet with s

[Traumatic brain injuries in winter sports : An overview based on the winter sports skiing, snowboarding and ice hockey].

In winter sports, skiers, snowboarders and ice hockey players have the highest risk of traumatic brain injuries (TBI). In skiing/snowboarding severe TBIs are of concern; in ice hockey, repetitive minor TBIs are frequent. The main causes of TBI in recreational skiing are collisions with trees; in professionals falls due to technical or tactical mistakes are the main causes. In ice hockey 10-15% of all injuries are due to a sports-related concussion (SRC), mostly caused by player-opponent contact. The pathomechanism in TBI is a combination of rotational and linear acceleration during head impact

Clinician guide to motorcycle helmet safety.

Motorcyclists' increased likelihood of involvement in motor vehicle collisions increases their risk of brain injury or death. Despite irrefutable evidence of the protective capabilities of motorcycle helmets, their use among riders is not ubiquitous. This paper is a functional guide to motorcycle helmet safety, assisting clinicians in promoting helmet use and treating patients with motorcycle-related injuries. First, five commonly held myths that promote unhelmeted riding are dispelled. Then, clinicians are prepared to assist their patients in choosing an appropriate helmet through an in-depth

Assessing the validity of a helmet fit checklist in a sample of youth football players.

The dynamics of American youth football make it critical to ensure that helmets are appropriately fit to decrease the risk of injuries. Currently, there is only one researcher-developed checklist to determine helmet fit, and psychometric testing is lacking; therefore, the aim of this work was to determine the validity of the checklist. The 13-item checklist was used to measure helmet fit in 267 youth football players prior to the start of the season. Using a Principal Components Analysis to assess validity, a 5-component model was found explaining 58% of the available variance. These results s

Analysis of bicycle helmet damage visibility for concussion-threshold impacts.

Any helmet involved in an accident should be replaced, regardless of appearance after impact. However, consumer compliance and interpretation of this recommendation is unclear, for which there is additional ambiguity for lesser impacts. This study aims to investigate the relation between helmet damage visibility and lesser impacts in line with concussion. As a preliminary model, a commercially available road-style helmet was chosen. Twelve helmets underwent impact attenuation testing; four were dropped from the standard testing height of 2 m, and eight from lower drop heights (0.34 and 0.42 m)

Bicycle helmet wearing is associated with closer overtaking by drivers: A response to Olivier and Walter, 2013.

There is a body of research on how driver behaviour might change in response to bicyclists' appearance. In 2007, Walker published a study suggesting motorists drove closer on average when passing a bicyclist if the rider wore a helmet, potentially increasing the risk of a collision. Olivier and Walter re-analysed the same data in 2013 and claimed helmet wearing was not associated with close vehicle passing. Here we show how Olivier and Walter's analysis addressed a subtly, but importantly, different question than Walker's. Their conclusion was based on omitting information about variability in

Motorcycle helmet use in Rhode Island.

Motorcycle crashes are a major public health concern and place economic stresses on the health care system. Helmets have been shown to reduce both motorcycle-related fatalities and head injuries. Universal motorcycle helmet laws in other states have shown to be effective at increasing helmet use. The current Rhode Island motorcycle helmet law does not require every motorcycle rider to wear a helmet. Given the number of deaths and injuries that could be prevented, public health efforts to increase helmet use through education and legislation should be considered for review.

Motorcycle helmet selection and usage for improved safety: A systematic review on the protective effects of helmet type and fastening.

OBJECTIVE: Motorcycle helmets are the most common and effective protective device to reduce head injuries and mortality in crashes among powered two-wheeler riders. Even if they are globally recognized as effective, there are still concerns regarding their correct use, which is necessary to achieve maximum head protection. The goal of this systematic review is to assess which characteristics of helmet design and use showed a positive influence on rider safety, in order to provide insights to improve end-user helmet usage. METHODS: A literature search was carried out combining two sets of keyw

Bone Conduction as a Viable Alternative to Current Communications Systems in Fighter Cockpits.

INTRODUCTION: Effective voice communication is essential when operating aircraft. Because of the loud operating environment in fighter cockpits, it has been a challenge to provide effective communication while simultaneously protecting the hearing sense. The objective of this study was to determine the feasibility of using bone conducting transducers (BCT) in place of legacy communications systems in fighter cockpits. METHODS: A military flight helmet was modified and outfitted with BCT and air-conducting speakers. BCT were independently tested against air-conducting speakers using a clinical

Patterns of injury in helmeted and nonhelmeted motorcyclists.

In the present study, the incidence of severe brain injury was 600 percent higher for patients riding without a helmet and the incidence of all brain injuries was nearly twice as high in the nonhelmeted riders. All surviving patients with severe brain injury sustained residual long-term disability. The incidence of injury and death was much higher for motorcyclists than for occupants of automobiles involved in accidents. Riding a motorcycle is dangerous and riding without a helmet is fool-hardy. Helmets also protect the face, as facial fractures were twice as common in the nonhelmeted riders.

Changes in the centre of mass and moment of inertia of a headform induced by a hockey helmet and face shield.

A study of the hockey helmet and face shield as potential contributors to cervical spinal cord trauma (burst vertebral fractures and cord injury) was undertaken. The main concern was whether the alteration in the location of the c of m or in the mass moment of inertia (Icm) of a player's head, induced by a helmet and face shield, would predispose him to a hyperflexion neck posture. The c of m and Icm of a bare Hodgson-WSU humanoid headform (H) were first determined and then the same measures were made with a helmet (H + h) and with a helmet and face shield (H+h+f). Of the nine different helmet

A novel Cervical Spine Protection device for reducing neck injuries in contact sports: design concepts and preliminary in vivo testing.

Head and neck injuries are common in contact sports such as American football. Different mechanisms can produce such injuries, including compressive impact forces on the crown of the helmet with the neck in a flexed chin-down position. The aim of this paper was developing and testing a novel Cervical Spine Protection Device (CSPD) designed to keep the neck within its safe physiological range. The cervical spine range of motion (ROM) of ten participants was measured under four conditions: free; wearing a football gear; wearing the CSPD; and wearing the CSPD underneath the gear. The CSPD was tes

Evaluation of helmet and goggle designs by modeling non-penetrating projectile impacts.

Despite the progress in developing personal combat-protective gear, eye and brain injuries are still widely common and carry fatal or long-term repercussions. The complex nature of the cranial tissues suggests that simple methods (e.g. crash-dummies) for testing the effectiveness of personal protective gear against non-penetrating impacts are both expensive and ineffective, and there are ethical issues in using animal or cadavers. The present work presents a versatile testing framework for quantitatively evaluating protective performances of head and eye combat-protective gear, against non-pen
