Surgical technique to reduce the risks of heart block following closure of ventricular septal defect in atrioventricular discordance.

Traumatic heart block remains a major concern after ventricular septal defect (VSD) closure in patients with atrioventricular discordance. A technique of closing the VSD, placing the suture line on the morphologically right side of the septum without opening the systemic ventricle, is described. This was used in 13 consecutive patients. The VSD was closed through the right atrium in eight patients, the left ventricle in three patients, the right atrium and the left ventricle in one patient, and through the right ventricle in one patient with atrioventricular disordance and ventriculo-arterial

Hybrid Procedures in Congenital Heart Disease: Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome/Muscular Ventricular Septal Defect/Stenting of Pulmonary Arteries.

Hybrid therapies have increased and offer a valuable alternative to standard catheter or surgical therapies in selected patient. These hybrid therapies often combine the best of both techniques, in particular for ventricular septal defect closure and intraoperative pulmonary artery stent placement. For patients with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, the hybrid approach is an important alternative therapeutic strategy, providing similar results to conventional Norwood-type palliation. Further studies are needed and are underway to evaluate the neurodevelopmental outcome in these patients.

Classification of normal and abnormal fetal heart ultrasound images and identification of ventricular septal defects based on deep learning.

OBJECTIVES: Congenital heart defects (CHDs) are the most common birth defects. Recently, artificial intelligence (AI) was used to assist in CHD diagnosis. No comparison has been made among the various types of algorithms that can assist in the prenatal diagnosis. METHODS: Normal and abnormal fetal ultrasound heart images, including five standard views, were collected according to the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology (ISUOG) Practice guidelines. You Only Look Once version 5 (YOLOv5) models were trained and tested. An excellent model was screened out after compar

Beating-heart patch closure of muscular ventricular septal defects under real-time three-dimensional echocardiographic guidance: a preclinical study.

OBJECTIVES: Safe and effective device closure of ventricular septal defects remains a challenge. We have developed a transcardiac approach to close ventricular septal defects using a patch delivery and fixation system that can be secured under real-time three-dimensional echocardiographic guidance. METHODS: In Yorkshire pigs (n = 8) a coring device was introduced into the left ventricle through a purse-string suture placed on the left ventricular apex, and a muscular ventricular septal defect was created. The patch deployment device containing a 20-mm polyester patch was advanced toward the v

Complete atrio-ventricular heart block, a not to be forgotten complication in transcatheter closure of perimembranous ventricular septal defect - a case report and review of literature.

Device occlusion of perimembranous ventricular septal defect is gaining popularity with the emergence of newer, softer occluders and improved technical know-how. We report a 26-year-old lady with a moderate size perimembranous ventricular septal defect who had a new onset of bundle branch block shortly after device closure. The patient subsequently developed a complete atrio-ventricular heart block.

Effects of transthoracic device closure on ventricular septal defects and reasons for conversion to open-heart surgery: A meta-analysis.

Transthoracic device closure (TTDC) is thought to be a promising technology for the repair of ventricular septal defects (VSDs). However, there is considerable controversy regarding the efficacy and safety of TTDC. The present study aimed to compare the benefits and safety of TTDC with those of conventional open-heart surgery (COHS) and analyze the associated factors causing complications, conversion to COHS and reoperation. Electronic database searches were conducted in PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Clinicaltrials.gov and several Chinese databases. A total of 5 randomized controlled trial

A heart team and multi-modality imaging approach to percutaneous closure of a post-myocardial infarction ventricular septal defect.

Post-infarction ventricular septal defect (PI-VSD) is a devastating complication that carries a high mortality with or without surgical repair. Percutaneous closure is an attractive alternative in select patients though requires appropriate characterization of the PI-VSD as well as careful device and patient selection. We describe a multidisciplinary and multi-modality imaging approach to successful percutaneous closure of a PI-VSD.

A Multiscale Model of Cardiovascular System Including an Immersed Whole Heart in the Cases of Normal and Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD).

A mathematical and computational model combining the heart and circulatory system has been developed to understand the hemodynamics of circulation under normal conditions and ventricular septal defect (VSD). The immersed boundary method has been introduced to describe the interaction between the moving two-dimensional heart and intracardiac blood flow. The whole-heart model is governed by the Navier-Stokes system; this system is combined with a multi-compartment model of circulation using pressure-flow relations and the linearity of the discretized Navier-Stokes system. We investigate the velo

Repair of massive ventricular septal defect with tricuspid straddling under mild hypothermia cardiopulmonary bypass with beating heart.

A 17-year-old woman with ventricular septal defect and tricuspid straddling valve. There are few reports about these associations in literature. We successfully performed a total correction which consisted of a close of the ventricular septal defect and suspension of straddling tricuspid valve. Ventricular septal defect was closed with a dacron patch and straddling tricuspid valve was suspended into the appropriate ventricle. The postoperative course has been uneventful.

Outcomes in patients with interrupted aortic arch and ventricular septal defect. A multiinstitutional study. Congenital Heart Surgeons Society.

Among 183 neonates with interrupted aortic arch and ventricular septal defect entering a multiinstitutional study between 1987 and 1992, nine died before repair was accomplished. Among the remaining 174, survival at 1 month and 1, 3, and 4 years after repair was 73%, 65%, 63%, and 63%, respectively. The risk factors for death were low birth weight, younger age at repair, interrupted arch type B, outlet and trabecular ventricular septal defects, smaller size of the ventricular septal defect, and subaortic narrowing. Echocardiographically measured dimensions (expressed as Z-values) at all levels

Initial Experience With the Aeson Total Artificial Heart in Patients With Ventricular Septal Defect After Acute Myocardial Infarction.

BACKGROUND: Post-myocardial infarction ventricular septal defect (VSD) is a rare but highly lethal complication of acute myocardial infarction. In cases of extensive septal destruction, surgical reconstruction is often not feasible. We report the first clinical experience with implantation of the Aeson total artificial heart (TAH) in patients with irreparable post-infarction VSD. METHODS: This multicenter retrospective analysis included 10 male patients with severe cardiogenic shock who underwent Aeson TAH implantation at four centers in Germany and France between November 2022 and March 2025

A six-chambered heart: cor triatriatum sinister with double-chambered right ventricle in association with ventricular septal defect.

BACKGROUND: Cor triatriatum has been described as a heart with three atria in which the left atrium (cor triatriatum sinistrum) or right atrium (cor triatriatum dextrum) is divided into two compartments by a fold of tissue, a membrane, or a fibromuscular band. Double-chambered right ventricle, on the other hand, is identified by the presence of an anomalous muscle bundle dividing the right ventricle into two chambers. CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we describe the case of a child who had a combination of both of these rare entities, effectively creating a heart with six chambers. The child underwen

Application value of echocardiography in transthoracic punctural closure of postoperative residual ventricular septal defect of congenital heart disease.

OBJECTIVES: Residual ventricular septal defect (VSD) after congenital heart disease (CHD) is one of the major postoperative complications in cardiac surgery. At present, the commonly used clinical treatment methods for this complication are reoperation to redo surgical repair with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and percutaneous transcatheter device closure, but these 2 methods have their own advantages and disadvantages. Transthoracic punctural closure of residual VSD is a feasible, safe, and novel technique for patients with residual VSD, which avoids not only the risk of difficulties in reoper

Criss-cross heart with double-outlet right ventricle, subpulmonary ventricular septal defect, and bicuspid pulmonary valve.

Criss-cross heart (CCH) is an extremely rare complex congenital heart malformation. It accounts for less than 0.1% of congenital heart diseases. Here, we describe a unique case of CCH with double-outlet right ventricle, huge subpulmonary ventricular septal defect, bicuspid pulmonary valve, and right-hand aortic arch. The anatomic features were observed with echocardiography, and the diagnosis was confirmed at surgery. Many variations of CCH have been described. The present case expands the spectrum of this entity and may provide new insight into this complex anatomy.

Growth parameters and endocrine function in relation to echocardiographic parameters in children with ventricular septal defect without heart failure.

To determine the effect of ventricular function, size of ventricular septal defect (VSD), and endocrine function on linear growth in children with VSD, we studied 88 children with VSD over a period of 1 year. Growth was assessed by determining the height standard deviation scores (HtSDS) and growth velocity (GV) every 4 months. Two hundred age-matched normal children served as controls for the growth data. Endocrine evaluation was performed in 30 randomly selected children with VSD, and 20 age-matched children with constitutional delay of growth (CSS). Growth hormone (GH) response to clonidine
