OBJECTIVE: To assess the presence of anticardiolipin antibodies (ACAs) in patients with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, chronic hepatitis D virus (HDV) infection and HBV-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and to associate this with the incidence of portal vein thrombosis (PVT) in HCC patients.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Sixty-five cirrhotic patients with HBV-related HCC, 28 naive patients with chronic HBV infection and 14 naive patients with chronic HDV infection were enrolled prospectively in the study. Thirty-two healthy blood donors were used as controls. The ACAs (immunoglobulin

Chronic hepatitis D virus (HDV) infection is the most severe form of viral hepatitis with high rates of end-stage liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma. Therefore, effective antiviral treatment strategies are needed desperately. Until recently, antiviral treatment was limited to pegylated interferon-alpha. With the conditional approval of the entry inhibitor bulevirtide by the European Medicines Agency, new treatment options are now available. In addition, multiple other antiviral compounds are currently tested in clinical phase II and III trials and represent promising agents for the tre

Non-organ specific autoantibodies are common in patients with chronic hepatitis C, making differential diagnosis difficult between viral, autoimmune forms and hepatitis C/autoimmune hepatitis overlap syndrome. The lack of additional criteria of autoimmunity in most patients leads to the definition of a "false" hepatitis C-autoimmune hepatitis overlap syndrome, while the "true" overlap syndrome occurs in a very few number of subjects. In patients with "false" overlap syndrome the first choice therapy is based on the administration of interferon plus ribavirin. On the contrary, first-line therap

Progression of liver disease in chronic hepatitis C depends on several factors related to the host, virus and the environment which deserves further investigations. 120 candidates for blood donation with hepatitis C virus were divided into three groups according to alcohol intake: abstainers, light drinkers and heavy drinkers. Liver histopathology alterations, namely architectural staging, periportal and lobular inflammation as well as portal inflammatory infiltrate were graded from 0 to 4 and afterwards divided into light (0 to 2) and severe (3 to 4). There were more drinkers among men (83.5%

The coexistence of non-organ specific autoantibodies and chronic hepatitis C features raises the dilemma as to whether the pathogenesis is viral or autoimmune and consequently to be treated with interferon or corticosteroids. Two cases with autoimmune characteristics and chronic hepatitis C are reported. We discuss the possibility of classifying this overlap form in three distinct entities: viral disease with an autoimmune epiphenomenon ("false hepatitis C/autoimmune hepatitis overlap syndrome"), viral disease associated to an autoimmune pathogenic component ("true hepatitis C/autoimmune hepat

The study reviews pathogenesis of autoimmune hepatitis and role of hepatotropic viruses in this disease. For a long time it was not known for certain which antigen was autoantigen on the hepatocyte. The discovery of human asialo glycoprotein receptor as an autoantigen enabled distinguishing autoimmune hepatitis from other chronic active hepatitis of unknown etiology. Autoantibodies and other tissue antigens ensured differentiation of autoimmune hepatitis in regard to severity of clinical manifestations in patients of different age and sex. The paper deals with autoantibodies and their occurren

Thirty three consecutive children with chronic non-A, non-B hepatitis (NANBH) were studied during a four year period to evaluate clinical and histological features and the role of hepatitis C virus (HCV). All patients were asymptomatic. Thirteen (39%) of them were anti-HCV positive. A history of parenteral exposure was significantly more frequent among anti-HCV positive (69%) than anti-HCV negative patients (15%). Aminotransferase serum values were not statistically different between anti-HCV positive and anti-HCV negative patients. Unlike adults, cirrhosis was never found in the children stud

HBeAg and anti-HBe were determined by radioimmunoassay (Abbott HBe) in serial serum samples from 22 patients who had been HBsAg-positive for more than 1 year. Seventeen patients (77%) were HBeAg-positive at onset of illness. Eight of these patients were persistently HBeAg-positive during 2.5-8.5 years' follow-up study (mean, 5.4 years). Chronic persistent hepatitis (CPH) developed in one of these patients and chronic active hepatitis (CAH) in seven patients. Nine persistently HBsAg-positive patients were transiently HBeAg-positive. Seven of these patients developed CPH, and they all lost HBeAg

This patient guidance document is intended for all people at risk of or living with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) infection. Globally, CHB is one of the leading causes of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, the most common form of liver cancer. However, less than one in five infected individuals is aware of their condition and only a small fraction of these individuals receive proper assessment and management. Safe and effective treatment is available in many countries and regions and is recommended for infected individuals who have evidence of liver damage or are at risk of complications. Sev

Patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) represent a living and permanent reservoir of hepatitis B virus (HBV). Millions of these CHB patients will eventually develop complications such as liver cirrhosis, hepatic failure, and hepatocellular carcinoma if they are not treated properly. Accordingly, several antiviral drugs have been developed for the treatment of CHB, but these drugs can neither eradicate all forms of HBV nor contain the progression of complications in most patients with CHB. Thus, the development of new and novel therapeutics for CHB remains a pressing need. The molecular and ce

Hepatitis D virus (HDV) infection is a chronic viral disease of the liver that is still largely considered to be incurable due to lack of effective treatment options. Without treatment, the risk for the development of advanced liver disease, cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma is significantly high. Currently, new therapeutic options are emerging out of ongoing phase 3 clinical trials, promising a new hope of cure for this devastating liver infection. Recently, bulevirtide, a first in its class HDV entry inhibitor, has received conditional authorization of use from the European Medicines Ag

Staging fibrosis accurately has always been a challenge in viral hepatitis and other liver diseases. Liver biopsy is an imperfect gold standard due to its intra and interobserver agreement limitations and additional characteristics such as its safety and cost. Hence, non-invasive tests have been developed to stage liver fibrosis. In addition to serological biomarkers, physical tests with reasonable accuracy are available and adopted in the daily clinic regarding viral hepatitis fibrosis staging. In this review, we discuss the published data regarding the staging of liver fibrosis in chronic he

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of chronic hepatitis on the serum profile of transferrin isoforms.
METHODS: Tested group consist of 160 patients with chronic hepatitis. The samples were analyzed by capillary electrophoresis on MINICAP electrophoretic system (Sebia, France).
RESULTS: In patients with chronic hepatitis tetrasialotransferrin level was increased (P=0.002) and pentasialotransferrin decreased (P=0.009). Moreover, statistical analysis revealed that trisialotransferrin level was different according to the grade of portal/periportal activity (P=0.009), th

UNLABELLED: It is estimated that 350 to 400 million individuals worldwide are chronically infected with hepatitis B virus (HBV). In regions of high endemicity, many of these are females of reproductive age who are an important source for perinatal transmission. There are a number of issues specific to the women of childbearing age who have chronic HBV infection, including the safety of antiviral therapy during pregnancy and breast-feeding, the changes in the immune system during pregnancy and postpartum that may impact on the natural history of HBV, and the emerging role of antivirals to reduc

Urticaria has a documented association with the prodromal phases of hepatitis A, B and, although still contentious, likely hepatitis C. Despite the documented association there are few actual reported cases of urticaria occurring with hepatitis A infection and in all of the cases reported so far the urticaria preceded the diagnosis of hepatitis A and was acute rather than chronic. We describe a case of urticaria occurring following acute infection with hepatitis A, which persisted beyond 6 weeks and therefore was by definition chronic. Although chronic urticaria has been reported to be associa
