INTRODUCTION: Refractory prosthetic joint infections (PJI) of the hip remain a major challenge in orthopedic surgery. The Girdlestone procedure, also known as resection arthroplasty, was originally described for native hips but has since been adopted as a salvage option for complex and recurrent prosthetic infections. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of this procedure in treating prosthetic hip infections in this context.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty-eight patients (91 hips) who underwent femoral resection arthroplasty for refractory hip prosthesis infection

PURPOSE: Given that the current standard of proton therapy (PT) for prostate cancer is through bilateral beams, this modality is typically avoided when it comes to treatment of patients with hip prosthesis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether novel PT methods, i.e., anterior proton beams and proton arc therapy (PArc), could be feasible options to treat this patient subpopulation. We evaluate PT methods in the context of dosimetry and robustness and compare with standard of practice volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) to explore any potential benefits.
METHODS: Two PT and one

The article makes a comparison between the results of total arthroprosthesis operation of the hip with traditional Mckee Arden prosthesis (50 cases operated in the two-year period 1976-77) and those with the new McKee Arden model with C.A.D. stem (52 cases operated in the two-year period 1977-78). All operations were performed at the "G. Pini" Orthopaedic Institute by the same team and with the same surgical technique. The results are based mainly on three parameters (according to McKee): pain, amplitude of movement, and need to use supports. THe Authors conclude by stressing the efficiency of

BACKGROUND: fibrous dysplasia is characterized by the formation of fibrous tissue that generates immature malformed trabeculae. Their involvement may be monostotic or poliostotic.
CASE REPORT: Thirty years old female with fibrous dysplasia of the left hip. At age 15 suffered hip fracture without apparent trauma, she was managed conservatively and significant shortening of the same limb was observed. At 30 years old, is pregnant, it had left hip pain, deformity and shortening is exacerbated. Simple radiography showed «shepherds crook deformity», she was treated with bisphosphonates. Computed a

BACKGROUND: The Stryker Anatomique Benoist Girard (ABG) hip implant system was a commonly used cementless prosthesis in the early 2000s, which fell from favour after several studies emerged implicating the prosthesis in high rates of revision. This retrospective, single-surgeon clinical study examines the fracture rate, revision rate and reasons for revision in 500 consecutive ABG II primary total conventional hip replacements.
METHODS: Follow-up was conducted by audit of patient notes, patient mailout survey, patient phone contact and audit of the Australian National Joint Replacement Regist

Most reports on the use of modular femoral stems during revision surgery have involved short follow-up periods. The authors evaluated the clinical and radiographic performance of 59 patients fitted with a distal fix modular stem. The average follow-up period was 8.2 years. Average Harris hip score was improved from 47 to 87.6. Of 19 patients with trochanteric osteotomy, 4 had a displaced greater trochanter. Re-revision was performed in 5 patients, and 3 of these were for subsidence (of these 3, subsidence was associated with dissociation of the coupling part in 1 and with osteotomy nonunion in

PURPOSE: To report emergent endovascular intervention to restore lower extremity arterial patency after migration of a hip prosthesis caused thrombosis of the external iliac artery (EIA).
CASE REPORT: Nine months following left hip revision arthroplasty, a 66-year-old woman presented to the Emergency Department with the complaints of an acutely painful left lower extremity for over 6 hours. Imaging showed the metallic acetabular portion of the hip prosthesis in the iliac fossa, with severe external compression of the EIA. After thrombolysis to remove clot from the EIA, an 8x60-mm self-expandi

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The production of particulate wear debris is a recognised complication of joint arthroplasty. Focus was made on local tissue reactions. Systemic distribution of wear debris are less know. We report two new cases of distant granulomatous reaction.
MATERIAL: The first case concerned a 71-year-old man with lymph node histiocytosis incidentally discovered during the staging of a prostatic carcinoma. The second case concerned a 61-year-old man with a visceral granulomatosis reaction (liver, spleen and lymph node) associated to hepatic ans splenic enlargement.

BACKGROUND: A modern hip arthroplasty liner was recalled for premature polyethylene wear with the potential for catastrophic osteolysis and failure. Physicians and hospitals are responsible for communicating recall information to patients. Our center instituted a protocol to reach patients who had recalled implants for follow-up. Our study looked at the effectiveness of this effort and risk factors for nonresponse.
METHODS: A retrospective study was performed to measure follow-up after total hip arthroplasty device recall. A standardized letter was used to reach out to all patients to notify

INTRODUCTION: The correct closure of the surgical wound is an important step in the procedure of a total hip prosthesis implantation (total hip arthroplasty, THA), which aims to a correct healing of the wound and minimize the risk of complications. The objective of our study is to determine if the use of a bidirectional barbed suture decreases the closing time after THA, in the fascial and subcutaneous plane, when compared to the conventional suture polyglactin 910. The hypothesis is that there is no difference in closing time when comparing both sutures.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: Prospective sing

CASE: A traumatic displaced transverse periprosthetic acetabular fracture around a well-functioning Birmingham hip resurfacing prosthesis was treated with open reduction and internal fixation. The acetabular component was found to be well-fixed intraoperatively and did not require revision. The patient recovered with excellent clinical and radiographic results at the 1-year follow-up with a Harris Hip Score of 94.
CONCLUSIONS: Internal fixation, rather than revision arthroplasty, offers acceptable outcomes in patients with periprosthetic acetabular fractures about well-fixed hip resurfacing p

INTRODUCTION: Bone is the third most common site of metastatic disease. Treatment of metastatic tumours of proximal femur usually used to be either palliative in the form of radiotherapy and chemotherapy or a very radical in form of hemipelvectomy and hip disarticulation. Both forms of treatment were associated with dismal outcomes. Now with the technological advancement and refinement in surgeries a custom made hip prosthesis offers a much better treatment option to the surgeon and a good quality life to the patient.
CASE PRESENTATION: We are presenting a case of metastatic adenocarcinoma of

We report a case of external iliac artery aneurysm rupture during removal of the acetabular component for septic loosening. Potentially fatal hemorrhage would have occurred if the risk had not been recognized, and the external iliac vessels exposed to gain vascular control before proceeding with implant removal. A review of the literature on vascular injury at revision hip surgery is presented.

73 patients (out of a total of 79) with altogether 87 PCA-stems were followed up 5 to 7 years after total hip arthroplasty. The cups combined in these operations were not part of this study. In 11% the PCA-stem had to be removed respectively changed because of loosening. 50% of all patients suffered from thigh pain during the first 6 months postoperatively. Generally this pain disappeared within the first year after operation. Nevertheless 40% reported periods of transient thigh pain after the first postoperative year. Only when this pain was increasing and persisting over months, a correlatio

The usual causes of injury to sciatic nerve during total hip replacement are intraoperative direct nerve injury, significant leg lengthening, improper retractor placement, cement extravasation, cement-related thermal damage, patient positioning, manipulation and postoperative hematoma. We present a case of early sciatic nerve injury with entrapment of sciatic nerve around the prosthetic femoral neck following repeated manipulation of dislocated total hip replacement. This case emphasises the importance of soft tissue in dealing with orthopedic problem. Limited number of attempts at closed redu

Three cases are presented and analyzed in which a Lippman Transfixion Hip Prosthesis had to be replaced because of the discomfort of the patient. In each case, there was evidence of wear between the head of the prosthesis and the flange. The different wear patterns indicated problems which exist in the alignment of component parts of the prosthesis. In each case there was low grade sepsis to which the debris may have contributed. Because of phagocytosis, amount of debris accumulation was difficult to evaluate. The factors which appear to have contributed to the amount of debris accumulation we
