Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia and Innate Immunity: A Narrative Review of the Roles of IL-1β and IL-8 (CXCL8).

Background: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a leading chronic lung complication in extremely premature newborns. The etiological factors contributing to of BPD include both prenatal and postnatal risk factors, as well as activation of innate immunity. Innate immunity and its bioactive mediators play a central role in orchestrating the inflammatory response. Among these, interleukin-1β (IL-1 β) and IL-8 (CXCL8) are particularly prominent. Methods: A structured literature search was conducted across major biomedical databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Ovid MEDLINE) to identify rel

Felid scavenging in forensic taphonomic research: An experimental approach.

Animal scavenging on human remains presents a major challenge at a forensic scene. These lasting changes can influence the interpretation of a post-mortem interval, the overall state of the remains and any associated evidence, impacting the integrity of the scene. Therefore, identifying taphonomic related changes due to animal scavenging is important to understand the post-deposition sequence of events. However, knowing where to look is challenging and animal scavenging studies are difficult to create. Therefore, this study worked in collaboration with zoological institutes in the UK to captur

Implications of Glycosaminoglycans on Viral Zoonotic Diseases.

Zoonotic diseases are infectious diseases that pass from animals to humans. These include diseases caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites and can be transmitted through close contact or through an intermediate insect vector. Many of the world's most problematic zoonotic diseases are viral diseases originating from animal spillovers. The Spanish influenza pandemic, Ebola outbreaks in Africa, and the current SARS-CoV-2 pandemic are thought to have started with humans interacting closely with infected animals. As the human population grows and encroaches on more and more natural habita

[Interactions of planorbic vectors of schistosomiasis mansoni and the problem of endemic expansion in the Amazonic region].

The hypothesis of competitive superiority is discussed in the light, first, of the complexity of the phenomena involved in the interaction and distribution of planorbid populations and, secondly, of the relation that is established between the snails of any given region and the infected human or animal host. Special attention is given to the distribution of planorbids in the Amazon, and the endemic problem of the region is dealt with.

Modeling human listeriosis in natural and genetically engineered animals.

Listeria monocytogenes causes listeriosis, a human foodborne infection leading to gastroenteritis, meningoencephalitis and maternofetal infections. InlA and InlB, two L. monocytogenes surface proteins, interact with their respective receptors E-cadherin and Met and mediate bacterial entry into human cultured cells. Here, we present protocols for studying listeriosis in three complementary animal models: (i) the human E-cadherin (hEcad) transgenic mouse line; (ii) the knock-in E16P mouse line; and (iii) the gerbil, in which both InlA-E-cadherin and InlB-Met species-specific interactions occur a

Antidepressant-like and anxiolytic-like effects of cannabidiol: a chemical compound of Cannabis sativa.

Anxiety and depression are pathologies that affect human beings in many aspects of life, including social life, productivity and health. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a constituent non-psychotomimetic of Cannabis sativa with great psychiatric potential, including uses as an antidepressant-like and anxiolytic-like compound. The aim of this study is to review studies of animal models using CBD as an anxiolytic-like and antidepressant-like compound. Studies involving animal models, performing a variety of experiments on the above-mentioned disorders, such as the forced swimming test (FST), elevated plus m

Psychophysiologic factors in atherogenesis and coronary artery disease.

Studies conducted on animals indicate that biobehavioral variables and diet can interact to facilitate atherogenesis. An unstable or threatening environment and stable behavioral predispositions of the individual appear to be interactive variables that may be useful for understanding behavioral contributions to atherogenesis. The interaction of threat with stable behavioral predispositions is echoed in psychophysiologic experiments relating human behavior to physiochemical reactivity. These stable behavioral predispositions in humans include hostility and aspects of the type A behavior pattern

A global one health perspective on leptospirosis in humans and animals.

Leptospirosis is a quintessential one health disease of humans and animals caused by pathogenic spirochetes of the genus Leptospira. Intra- and interspecies transmission is dependent on 1) reservoir host animals in which organisms replicate and are shed in urine over long periods of time, 2) the persistence of spirochetes in the environment, and 3) subsequent human-animal-environmental interactions. The combination of increased flooding events due to climate change, changes in human-animal-environmental interactions as a result of the pandemic that favor a rise in the incidence of leptospirosi

Social attachment shapes interbrain synchrony.

Neural synchrony, or correlated neural activity across interacting individuals, scales with relationship quality in humans, yet how it evolves during social bond formation remains unknown. Using fiber photometry in monogamous prairie voles, we track prefrontal cortex synchrony across pair bond formation. Bonded voles show stronger synchrony with partners than strangers, mirroring human findings. A linear mixed model reveals that synchrony is jointly shaped by bond strength, inter-animal distance, and time since interaction onset, with relationship type modulating how each factor contributes. Zoonotic neglected tropical diseases at the animal-human interface in the Greater Mekong Subregion: Two decades of surveillance in Laos and Cambodia.

Zoonotic neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) remain a substantial but under-recognised source of human morbidity and economic concern in the Greater Mekong Subregion, particularly in settings characterised by close human-animal interaction. This article represents a narrative synthesis of zoonotic disease research conducted in Laos and Cambodia between 2000 and 2025. The review integrates published literature with findings from long-term surveillance programmes conducted by the authors and collaborating institutions in Laos, with comparative insights from Cambodia, to examine the presence, dist

The human polyomavirus, JCV, and neurological diseases (review).

JC virus, a human neurotropic polyomavirus, is the established etiologic agent of the fatal demyelinating disease, progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, which usually affects individuals with defects in cell-mediated immunity. Cytolytic destruction of oligodendrocytes, the myelin-producing cells of the central nervous system is attributed as the mechanism by which JCV induces demyelination. PML was at one time a rare complication however it is now a much more common disease affecting patients of all ages due to the prevalence of AIDS. Autism Spectrum Disorder: Integrating Genetic and Environmental Risk.

Autism spectrum disorder is a common neurodevelopmental condition, defined by persistent deficits in social interaction and communication, as well as restricted repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities. Autism spectrum disorder is highly heterogeneous, encompassing a broad range of clinical presentations and suggesting it includes multiple etiological subtypes. Although no unified cause has been established, accumulating evidence indicates that genetic susceptibility interacts with environmental and developmental factors to shape diverse phenotypic outcomes. This review summar

A Stress Response Kinase Cascade Is Conserved in Arabidopsis and Modulated by a Parasite Effector.

We report that a novel Arabidopsis thaliana kinase cascade shows telltale similarities to the kinase cascades of oxidative stress response kinases (OSRKs) from humans and animals. A previously uncharacterized A. thaliana OSRK-like serine/threonine protein kinase (AtOSRK1) physically interacts with the kinase "With No Lysine" Kinase 5 (WNK5) and the plasma membrane-bound SNARE protein AtSYP132. The physical interaction between AtOSRK1 and AtWNK5 is governed by conserved domains also found in animal proteins; however, in all plants assayed, one of the interaction domains is found in the opposite

Do cereal mixed-linked β-glucans possess immune-modulating activities?

β-glucans are known for their immune-modulating properties. However, the heterogeneity of these glucose polymers makes a distinction between the different sources and structures necessary-a fact that has been little allowed for in the literature. We have focused on β-glucans from cereals as they are already used as functional food ingredients due to their established cholesterol lowering effect. Cereal β-glucans have shown in vitro activity on cytokine secretion, phagocytic activity and cytotoxicity of isolated immune cells, and activation of the complement system. Animal studies suggest a pos

[Ecology of antimicrobial resistance: Special aspects of extended-spectrum β-lactamases].

Extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) producing Enterobacteriaceae were detected shortly after the introduction of broad spectrum cephalosporins in hospitals. Today, they are prevalent in the community, in animals, foods, and the environment. Many factors contribute to the broad distribution, especially the usage of antimicrobials in humans and animals, and due to multiple resistances, not only the usage of β-lactams and cephalosporins. This broad distribution of ESBLs cannot be fully explained by clonal spread of successful strains. Horizontal transmission of resistance genes, located on transm

First observation of a chimpanzee with albinism in the wild: Social interactions and subsequent infanticide.

Albinism-the congenital absence of pigmentation-is a very rare phenomenon in animals due to the significant costs to fitness of this condition. Both humans and non-human individuals with albinism face a number of challenges, such as reduced vision, increased exposure to ultraviolet radiation, or compromised crypticity resulting in an elevated vulnerability to predation. However, while observations of social interactions involving individuals with albinism have been observed in wild non-primate animals, such interactions have not been described in detail in non-human primates (hereafter, primat

Hunting and consumption of rodents by children in the Lassa fever endemic area of Faranah, Guinea.

As a consequence of the Ebola outbreak, human-animal contact has gained importance for zoonotic transmission surveillance. In Faranah (Upper Guinea), daily life is intertwined with rodents, such as the Natal multimammate mouse, Mastomys natalensis; a reservoir for Lassa virus (LASV). However, this contact is rarely perceived as a health risk by residents, although Lassa fever (LF) is known to be endemic to this region. Conversely, these observations remain a great concern for global health agendas. Drawing on ethnographic research involving interviews, focus group discussions, participant obse

Stress and the heart: biobehavioral aspects of sudden cardiac death.

Stress has been implicated as a developmental factor in atherosclerotic heart disease, essential hypertension, and sudden cardiac death. This article reviews the mechanisms and biobehavioral effects of stress on the heart, focusing on its relation to sudden cardiac death. Epidemiologic evidence, cultural studies, animal experiments, and human research are reviewed to better understand the biobehavioral aspects of stress on the heart. Emphasis is placed on understanding the interaction of the central nervous system's frontal cortex and hypothalamus with cardiovascular control areas. With today'

Coati (Nasua nasua) attacks on humans: case report.

Coatis [including Nasua nasua, the ring-tailed coati], are medium-sized mammals widely distributed in the Americas. They are social animals, whose normal diet includes insects, fruits, and small vertebrates, and rarely prey on larger sized animals. There are, to our knowledge, no reports in the medical literature of attacks on humans. This report describes a coati attack on 2 children in their home. The children sustained deep scratches and bites. The animal may have injured the humans in a defensive strike, but motivation for attack was uncertain. Coati attacks may occur in places where there

Sulfonamide resistance evaluation in five animal species and first report of sul4 in companion animals.

Sulfonamides are one of the oldest groups of antibacterial agents with a broad-spectrum, used as first line treatment in bacterial infections. Their widespread use produced a selective pressure on bacteria, as observed by the high incidence of sulfonamides resistance mainly in Gram negative bacteria isolated from animals. In this research, the presence of sulfonamide resistance genes (sul1, sul2, sul3, and sul4) in phenotypically resistant Escherichia coli isolates has been studied. These genes were amplified in isolates recovered from five animal species, with different interactions to humans
