Sudoscan as a noninvasive tool to assess sudomotor dysfunction in patients with Fabry disease: results from a case-control study.

Hypohidrosis is a frequent and early symptom in patients with Fabry disease. Studies have reported improved sweating in patients treated with enzyme-replacement therapy. A new method, Sudoscan, has been developed that is noninvasive, is quantitative, and can quickly evaluate sweat gland function. It is based on the electrochemical reaction between sweat chlorides and stainless-steel electrodes in contact with the palms and soles. The aim of our study was to evaluate the Sudoscan as a tool to assess sudomotor dysfunction in patients with Fabry disease. Consecutive patients were prospectively re

Bazex-Dupré-Christol syndrome in a 1-year-old boy and his mother.

Bazex-Dupré-Christol syndrome is a rare genodermatosis with cancer predisposition, characterized by follicular atrophoderma, multiple milia, congenital hypotrichosis, hypohidrosis and basal cell malformations that include nevoid basal cell carcinomas of early onset. We present two patients with this syndrome, a 1-year-old boy with diffuse scalp and eyebrows alopecia, milia papules on the face, ears, trunk, and limbs. Hypohidrosis was observed on his trunk and head. His 16-year-old mother had identical changes since childhood, with hair fragility, and multiple atrophic "ice pick" follicular dep

[Anhidrotic ectomermal dysplasia (AED): four cases].

INTRODUCTION: Anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (AED) or Christ-Siemens-Touraine syndrome is a rare, hereditary genodermatosis, classically X-linked recessive disorder. MATERIAL AND METHODS: [corrected] We report the cases of 3 children and a male adult. RESULTS: The mode of diagnosis, the clinical signs and the therapeutic option are detailed. DISCUSSION: AED is characterized by a malformative state derived from the ectodermal layer of the embryo which results in the triad: anhidrosis (or hypohidrosis), hypotrichosis, anodontia (or hypodontia). Hypohidrosis causes thermoregulation disorders,

Acquired Idiopathic Generalized Anhidrosis (AIGA) and Its Complications: Implications for AIGA as an Autoimmune Disease.

Acquired idiopathic generalized anhidrosis (AIGA) is a rare disorder in which systemic anhidrosis/hypohidrosis occurs without causative dermatological, metabolic or neurological disorder. Most cases of AIGA have been reported in Asia, especially in Japan, but there have been only a few reports in Europe and the United States. Severe AIGA may result in heatstroke and can reduce quality of life due to restriction of exercise and outdoor works. AIGA is often accompanied by cholinergic urticaria (CholU), and it is thought that AIGA and CholU with anhidrosis/hypohidrosis belong to the same spectrum

Pathogenesis of cholinergic urticaria in relation to sweating.

Cholinergic urticaria (CU) has clinically characteristic features, and has been frequently described in the literature. However, despite its comparatively old history, the pathogenesis and classification remains to be clarified. CU patients are occasionally complicated by anhidrosis and/or hypohidrosis. This reduced-sweat type should be included in the classification because the therapeutic approaches are different from the ordinary CU. It is also well-known that autologous sweat is involved in the occurrence of CU. More than half of CU patients may have sweat hypersensitivity. We attempt to c

ROSAH syndrome lacking splenomegaly and complete anhidrosis.

ROSAH (retinal dystrophy, optic nerve oedema, splenomegaly, anhidrosis and headache) syndrome is a rare multisystem autoinflammatory disorder caused by heterozygous gain-of-function mutations in ALPK1 Initially characterised by these features, its clinical spectrum extends beyond the acronym. We report the first genetically confirmed case in Latin America. The proband, in her mid-20s, presented with progressive retinal dystrophy leading to vision loss, xerostomia, short dental roots, recurrent low-grade fevers and elevated C-reactive protein. Notably, she lacked splenomegaly and anhidrosis; in

Alopecia-anosmia-deafness-hypogonadism syndrome revisited: report of a new case.

Johnson et al [1983] reported on a large family with alopecia-anosmia-deafness-hypogonadism syndrome. We report the detailed findings of an unrelated, affected individual and emphasize the presence of hypohidrosis in our case. Our case indicates that this syndrome is not a private syndrome.

Bazex-Dupré-Christol syndrome: an ectodermal dysplasia with skin appendage neoplasms.

Bazex-Dupré-Christol syndrome is a rare X-linked genodermatosis characterized by early-onset nonmelanoma skin cancers, atrophoderma follicularis, hypotrichosis, hypohidrosis, and multiple milia. Its molecular basis remains unknown and nosologic classification is debated. We report a 5-year-old child presenting sparse hair, reduced sweating, ice-pick skin depressions of the dorsum of hands, facial and limb milia, perianal skin hyperpigmentation, and hyperpigmented papules of the axillae and neck. His mother showed similar features but lacked hair involvement. Histologic examination of a skin pa

An assessment of plantar hyperhidrosis after endoscopic thoracic sympathicolysis.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic bilateral thoracic sympathicolysis (EBTS) is an effective and minimally invasive procedure used for patients with primary hyperhidrosis. The purpose of this study was to examine plantar hyperhidrosis before and after EBTS. METHODS: A total of 198 patients with primary hyperhidrosis underwent 396 thoracoscopic sympathicolysis of ganglia T2-T3 in a prospective study. All completed a preoperative questionnaire, followed by a second questionnaire 12 months after the operation. The questionnaires evaluated sweating in the different body areas. Only the zones of anhydrosis we

Autonomic hyperreflexia in pure progressive autonomic failure: a case report.

A 60-year-old woman suffered from recurrent episodes of fever, hypertension, facial flushing, vomiting, stridor, slowly progressive symptoms of hypohidrosis, and orthostatic hypotension. The episodes were synchronous with elevated catecholamine concentration in plasma and urine. This is an example of paroxysmal autonomic hyperreflexia in a setting of pure progressive autonomic failure.
