This study addresses the Brazilian Ministry of Health's initiative to standardize procedures for vaccinating isolated Indigenous peoples who require the intervention, aiming to guide expeditionary health teams in effectively planning post-contact vaccination procedures and preparing for future contacts, aiming to improve them. We also discuss some challenges that need to be overcome to make this initiative more equitable, given the ethnic and health disparities so typical of Brazilian Indigenous peoples, especially the Korubo Indigenous People, who live in isolation in the Amazon Rainforest. BACKGROUND: Though Indigenous Australian peoples reportedly have poorer survival outcome after cardiac surgery, few studies have jointly documented the experience of major morbidity, and considered the influence of patient geographic remoteness.
METHODS: From January 1998 to September 2008, major morbidity events and survival were recorded for 2748 consecutive patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft surgery. Morbidity and survival analyses adjusted for propensity deciles based on patient ethnicity and age, sex, left ventricular ejection fraction, recent myocardial infarction, tobacco

Kidney failure, defined as end-stage kidney disease requiring kidney replacement therapy, is a public health concern that disproportionately affects indigenous peoples around the world. Despite advancements in medical technologies and preventive public health interventions in kidney care, indigenous peoples continue to face significant barriers that limit their access to care. These barriers include limited availability of kidney care services in remote areas, cultural and language obstacles, systemic racism, low health literacy, geographic isolation, and mistrust in health care systems. A large nationwide outbreak occurred in 1989-1990 in China, in which nearly 10,000 poliomyelitis cases were reported. After two rounds of oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) supplemental activity in nearly every province in the 1992-1993 winter season, no wild poliovirus was detected in 1993 in 22 provinces in the middle of China that contained 86% of the population. During the first national immunization days (NIDs) conducted in December 1993 and January 1994, 83 million children 0-47 months of age were immunized. In 1994, wild poliovirus was identified in only 6 of 2397 children with stool specime

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is the leading cause of wound infections, often progressing into serious invasive bloodstream infections. MRSA disproportionately affects Indigenous peoples in Canada with higher rates of skin and wound infections, an example of persistent gaps in health outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples precipitated by the legacy of colonialism. Conversely, Indigenous peoples have long used natural remedies for infections and other diseases; however, their knowledge was rarely considered for modern medicine. The stagnant antibiotic discov

Globally, soil contamination threatens ecosystems and food security. This study examines the contamination of soils intended for agri-food initiatives by Indigenous communities across New South Wales and Queensland, Australia, and Newfoundland and subarctic Ontario, Canada. Soils from 47 sites were tested for metals, metalloids, organochlorine (OC) pesticides, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) to assess ecological risks and compare against national guidelines. Australian soils were primarily contaminated with lead (Pb) and to a lesser extent with other metals and metalloids, whereas subarct

OBJECTIVE: The transition from foraging to farming occurred throughout the Neolithic was characterized by an increase in oral pathologies, such as caries and antemortem tooth loss, due to the consumption of softened foods rich in starch and sugars. The introduction of agricultural foods led to a disequilibrium in the masticatory apparatus, which is ultimately reflected in their dental wear.
DESIGN: Here we analyze the molar macrowear patterns of the Warlpiri people (N = 33) from Yuendumu (Central Australia), a contemporary population that was at an early stage of transition from a nomadic and

Culturally safe healthcare approaches are important to improve outcomes of Indigenous people. Non-Indigenous clinicians are often ill-prepared to provide such healthcare. The NHMRC Centre for Research Excellence (CRE) especially for First Nations Children has been studying for several years how to improve clinical care for Indigenous children with respiratory disease in hospital, clinic, urban, rural and remote settings. At a CRE meeting in 2023 key themes were identified based on what we have learned. Themes were informed by research conducted by the CRE and supplemented by relevant manuscrip

BACKGROUND: Mental illness stigma continues to be pervasive and problematic in society. Researchers have attempted to better understand this stigma through investigations into demographic factors that may predict stigma, focusing on factors such as age, ethnicity and education.
METHOD: We investigated demographic factors in the context of Aotearoa New Zealand, with a particular focus on Māori, the Indigenous people of Aotearoa. We used data from the Health Promotion Agency, which collected representative samples from Aotearoa across three survey waves (total n = 3518). Assessment instruments

BACKGROUND: Despite the existence of human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccines with demonstrated safety and effectiveness and funded HPV vaccination programs, coverage rates are persistently lower and cervical cancer burden higher among Canadian Indigenous peoples. Barriers and supports to HPV vaccination in Indigenous peoples have not been systematically documented, nor have interventions to increase uptake in this population. This protocol aims to appraise the literature in Canadian and global Indigenous peoples, relating to documented barriers and supports to vaccination and interventions to inc

This study assesses prenatal care for indigenous women 14-49 years of age with children under five years of age in Brazil. The First National Survey of Indigenous People's Health and Nutrition assessed 3,967 women who met these criteria, of whom 41.3% in the North, 21.2% in the Central, 22.2% in the Northeast, and 15% in the South/Southeast. Prenatal care was offered to 3,437 (86.6%) of these women. The North of Brazil showed the highest proportion of indigenous women who did not receive prenatal care. Coverage was 90.4%, but only some 30% began prenatal care in the first trimester, and only 6
