Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) retrieval teams are multidisciplinary teams that initiate ECMO therapy for patients with severe acute respiratory failure in referring hospitals and transfer patients to regional specialised centres for ongoing care. The present study aimed to explore an ECMO team's experience of psychological safety and generate recommendations to strengthen psychological safety. METHODS: The study was conducted in the Roy

Psychological Safety in the Medical Care of Black Breast and Ovarian Cancer Patients and Families.

BACKGROUND: Psychological safety is critical to early and continued engagement with healthcare providers, yet no studies have explored this concept in relationship to cancer care. AIMS: We explored factors influencing psychological safety among Black breast and ovarian cancer patients and their family members. METHODS: Socioeconomically diverse patients with a personal diagnosis or family history of breast and/or ovarian cancer were invited to complete a

Feasibility and acceptability of a brief intervention to improve mild traumatic brain injury recovery: Problem-solving training-concussion.

OBJECTIVE: Mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBIs) are common among Veterans. Although the majority of neurobehavioral symptoms resolve following mTBI, studies with Veteran samples demonstrate a high frequency and chronicity of neurobehavioral complaints (e.g., difficulties with attention, frustration tolerance) often attributed to mTBI. Recent opinions suggest the primacy of mental health treatment, and existing mTBI practice guidelines promote patient-centered intervention beginning in primary care (PC). However, trial evidence regarding effective clinical management in PC is lacking. This stu

DESIGN: The present study set out to evaluate quality of life and satisfaction with treatment in adult patients previously treated for CLP at the Wilhelmina Children's Hospital. Semistructured interviews were performed. PATIENTS: A total of 2

Long-Term Neurological and Psychological Distress Symptoms among Smallholder Farmers in Costa Rica with a History of Acute Pesticide Poisoning.

Studies suggest that acute pesticide poisonings (APP) may be linked with long-term neurological effects. To examine long-term neurological and psychological distress symptoms associated with having experienced an APP, we conducted a cross-sectional study of 300 conventional and organic smallholder farmers from Zarcero County, Costa Rica, May-August 2016. We collected self-reported data on sociodemographic characteristics, occupational history, pesticide exposure, APPs, neurological and psychological distress symptoms (using the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI)). Adjusted logistic regression model

[Psychic symptoms and personality of 50 patients with Cushing's syndrome (author's transl)].

To determine whether patients with hypothalamo-pituitary Cushing's disease (HPC-D) can be distinguished on psychological grounds from these presenting with adrenal Cushing's syndrome (AC-S) or with ectopic ACTH syndrome, an in-depth psychological study including full personal, family and socio-professional history and a psychological interview was carried out in 50 patients with endogenous hypercortisolism. The results showed that psychiatric symptoms, such as anxiety and depression, are virtually constant in patients with either HPC-D or AC-S. They are, however, more pronounced in patients wi

Clinical approach to dyspareunia.

Dyspareunia needs to be addressed from an integrated patient-centered perspective. This review analyzes the organic causes of pain during intercourse. Factors that are often underevaluated in the clinical setting include hormonal, inflammatory, muscular, iatrogenic, neurologic, vascular, connective, and immunitary causes. Psychosexual factors, such as vaginismus, loss of libido, arousal disorders and sexual pain-related disorders, often overlap. A preliminary clinical approach aimed at integrating different biological and psychosexual etiologies in a comprehensive manner is discussed in this a

Self-help techniques for auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia.

Even with the best treatment available in the United States, people with schizophrenia often remain troubled by auditory hallucinations. Given the less than optimal results of traditional mental health care, the following exploratory study was conducted. A convenience sample of 33 adult outpatients with schizophrenia were interviewed to elicit what (if any) self-help strategies they used for coping with auditory hallucinations. The patients were all being treated at a community mental health clinic. The self-help strategies reported by the patients included (a) physiological changes, (b) cogni

Moving Toward a Positive Birth: The Protective Role of Psychological Capital in Shaping Childbirth Experiences.

PURPOSE: Positive childbirth experiences (CBEs) impact maternal and child well-being, but many women, particularly those of low socioeconomic status, report negative or traumatic births. This mixed-methods longitudinal study investigated whether and how psychological capital-a psychological construct composed of hope, self-efficacy, resilience, and optimism-moderates the associations between birth complications, birth trauma, and perceived own capacity, a critical indicator of positive CBEs. The extent to which this measure adequately captures the illness representations of this group was also evaluated through semi-structured interviews. Forty-four patients with IC attending an out-patient clinic at a large UK hospital completed a questionnaire booklet comprising of the IPQ-R and the General Health Questionnaire-28 (GHQ-28). Fifteen patients also took part in a follow-up interview. P
