The prevalence of diabetic neuropathy in Greenland and its association with Inuit genetic ancestry - a cross-sectional study.

AIMS: Data on diabetic neuropathies in Greenland remains limited. The aim was to estimate the prevalence of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) and cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy (CAN) among Greenlanders with diabetes and prediabetes and investigate whether Inuit ancestry contributes to higher susceptibility. METHODS: Individuals with diabetes and prediabetes from the Greenland Population Survey 2018 were examined for DPN (Vibration Perception Threshold (VPT) and light pressure) and CAN (Cardiovascular Reflex Tests and Heart Rate Variability). Inuit genetic admixture was included as a d

"All the problems in the community are multifaceted and related to each other": Inuit concerns in an era of climate change.

OBJECTIVE: Human dimensions of climate change research in the Arctic often proposes ways for local communities to adapt to changes to their environment, foregrounding problems posed by climate change while treating social, political, and economic factors as background conditions. We explore the relevance of this research paradigm for Inuit by examining how Inuit from Kangiqsujuaq present and discuss the major issues facing their community. METHODS: We thematically code and analyze the responses of 107 Inuit to three free-response questions about the problems facing their community and the bes

The potential impact and cost-effectiveness of tobacco reduction strategies for tuberculosis prevention in Canadian Inuit communities.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant public health problem in Canadian Inuit communities. In 2016, Canadian Inuit had an incidence rate 35 times the Canadian average. Tobacco use is an important risk factor for TB, and over 60% of Inuit adults smoke. We aimed to estimate changes in TB-related outcomes and costs from reducing tobacco use in Inuit communities. METHODS: Using a transmission model to estimate the initial prevalence of latent TB infection (LTBI), followed by decision analysis modelling, we conducted a cost-effectiveness analysis that compared the current standard of

Serum levels of environmental pollutants is a risk factor for breast cancer in Inuit: a case control study.

BACKGROUND: Environmental Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) can alter the hormone homeostasis by mimicking, interfering or blocking the function of hormones; moreover POPs are hypothesized to modify the risk of breast cancer. The association between POPs and breast cancer has been widely studied but the conclusions are inconsistent. The present study examined the associations between serum levels of POPs and breast cancer with focus on the highly exposed Greenlandic Inuit population. METHODS: The study design was a case-control study of Inuit women from Greenland. The participants were ask

Reproductive history and dietary habits and breast cancer risk in Greenlandic Inuit: a case control study.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of breast cancer in Greenland has increased considerably since 1970. It has been suggested that the previous low incidence is associated with the traditional lifestyle and marine food diet, and that the increase in breast cancer risk may be due to changes to a more westernized diet and lifestyle. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relation between food intake, reproductive factors and the risk of breast cancer in Greenlandic Inuit women. DESIGN: A case control study with participants from all regions of Greenland. The sampling was carried out at Dronning Ingrids Hospital

A paucity of liver disease in Canadian Inuit with chronic hepatitis B virus, subgenotype B6 infection.

Clinical observations suggest that chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections in the Canadian Inuit are less often associated with serious adverse outcomes than has been described in other HBV-infected patient populations. The aim of this study was to document the clinical and biochemical features, liver-related morbidity and all-cause mortality in Canadian Inuit with chronic HBV infections. Administrative databases were reviewed for individuals identified as hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) positive during a 1983-85 seroepidemiological survey of viral hepatitis in Baffin Island, Canada. The paradox of anemia with high meat intake: a review of the multifactorial etiology of anemia in the Inuit of North America.

Anemia is a serious concern among indigenous populations in North America, and it appears to be widespread among the Inuit despite abundant intakes of heme iron. It is therefore hypothesized that anemia for the Inuit involves other dietary factors not usually associated with animal foods, such as low intakes of vitamin A and/or folate, riboflavin, and vitamin C. Also, Helicobacter pylori infection and/or parasitosis may result in gastrointestinal blood loss and/or functional iron deficiency. This review aims to describe factors that may cause anemia in Inuit populations despite high meat intak

Refractive error, risk of amblyopia and eye care services utilisation among Nunavik Inuit in Northern Canada.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Nunavik Inuit patients, in Northern Canada, have a significant burden of refractive error. The frequency at which they access eye care is insufficient. This exposes children of this population to a substantial risk of refractive amblyopia. BACKGROUND: No data are available on eye health and services among Nunavik Inuit in Quebec, Canada. This study aims to describe the prevalence of ametropias, risk of refractive amblyopia, and eye health services uptake amongst a sample of Nunavik Inuit. METHODS: Retrospective cohort using data from electronic records of the sole governm

Metabolic features of adiposity and glucose homoeostasis among school-aged inuit children from Nunavik (Northern Quebec, Canada).

In contrast to most Indigenous people in Canada, Inuit appeared until recently to have been protected from type 2 diabetes (T2D) related to obesity. We assessed the associations of metabolites (amino acids, acylcarnitines) with adiposity and biomarkers of T2D in school-aged Inuit children of Nunavik (Canada). Concentrations of metabolite were measured in plasma samples from a cross-sectional analysis of 248 children (mean age = 10.8 years). We assessed associations of plasma metabolites with adiposity measures (BMI, skinfold thicknesses) and T2D markers (insulin, glucose, adiponectin). Plasma

Cancers of skin, bone, connective tissues, brain, eye, thyroid and other specified and unspecified sites in Inuit.

Low rates of skin cancer, both melanoma and non-melanoma, were observed in Inuit after 20 years of observation. Tumours of the brain and central nervous system, of the thyroid, bone and connective tissues and other specified sites occurred with rates similar to those in comparison populations in Denmark, Connecticut and Canada. These findings support that neither UV and ionizing radiation from nuclear fall-out, nor pollution of herbicides and pesticides in the Arctic area have yet had any noticeable impact on cancer risk. However, unspecified and secondary neoplasms constitute 7-8% of the tota

Seasonal variations in exposure to methylmercury and its dietary sources among pregnant Inuit women in Nunavik, Canada.

Among populations living in close connection with the sea, rivers and lakes for subsistence, diet varies according to local monthly wildlife species availability and food preferences. This may lead to variations in methylmercury (MeHg) exposure over a year, although no biomonitoring studies have documented this issue in Circumpolar populations, the most exposed to international Hg emissions. Our aim was to characterize seasonal variations in MeHg exposure among pregnant Inuit women from Nunavik and to identify country foods responsible for these variations. Between October 2016 and March 2017,

Prevalence and factors associated with pain-related disabilities among Inuit in Canada in 2017: a cross-sectional study.

Working with an Indigenous Advisory Committee, including an Inuit Health Advisor and Researcher, we analyzed the 2017 Aboriginal Peoples Survey to examine prevalence and factors associated with pain-related disabilities (PRDs) among Inuit in Canada. Self-reported data were collected from Inuit ≥15 years. PRDs were defined as 'sometimes', 'often', or 'always' experiencing activity limitations due to pain from a long-term condition lasting ≥ six months. We computed PRD prevalence [95% CI] overall, and by geographic location, age, sex, type and number of co-existing disabilities. Modified Poisson

Associations between prenatal exposure to a mixture of lead, mercury and polychlorinated biphenyls and executive function in Inuit adolescents.

Numerous studies have investigated the individual contribution of prenatal exposure to lead (Pb), mercury (Hg) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) on neurocognitive development, but few have explored their combined influence, particularly on executive function, during adolescence. This study aims to assess the associations between prenatal exposure to Pb, Hg and PCB-153 and executive function in mid-to-late adolescence. Two-hundred twelve Inuit participants (mean age = 18.5 years, range = 16.0 to 21.9) from Nunavik, Canada, completed four tasks assessing executive function: a Stop Task, a 2n-

Toward Precision Medicine: TBC1D4 Disruption Is Common Among the Inuit and Leads to Underdiagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: A common nonsense mutation in TBC1D4 was recently found to substantially increase the odds of type 2 diabetes in Greenlandic Inuit, leading to exclusively increased postprandial glucose. We investigated the frequency and effect of the TBC1D4 mutation on glucose metabolism and type 2 diabetes diagnosis among Canadian and Alaskan Inuit. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Exome sequencing of the TBC1D4 variant was performed in 114 Inuit from Nunavik, Canada, and Sanger sequencing was undertaken in 1,027 Alaskan Inuit from the Genetics of Coronary Artery Disease in Alaskan Natives (GOCADAN)

The association between blood pressure and whole blood methylmercury in a cross-sectional study among Inuit in Greenland.

BACKGROUND: The Inuit in Greenland have a high average consumption of marine species and are highly exposed to methylmercury, which in other studies has been related to hypertension. Data on the relation between methylmercury and hypertension is limited, especially in populations subjected to a high exposure of methylmercury. We examined the relation between whole blood mercury and blood pressure (BP) in Inuit in Greenland. METHODS: A cross-sectional population-based study among adult Inuit in Greenland was performed in 2005-2009. Information on socio-demography, lifestyle, BP, blood samples

Prenatal methylmercury, postnatal lead exposure, and evidence of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder among Inuit children in Arctic Québec.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal exposure to methylmercury (MeHg) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) has been associated with impaired performance on attention tasks in previous studies, but the extent to which these cognitive deficits translate into behavioral problems in the classroom and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) remains unknown. By contrast, lead (Pb) exposure in childhood has been associated with ADHD and disruptive behaviors in several studies. OBJECTIVES: In this study we examined the relation of developmental exposure to MeHg, PCBs, and Pb to behavioral problems at school
