Reintegration of ebola survivors into their communities - Firestone District, Liberia, 2014.

The current Ebola virus disease (Ebola) epidemic in West Africa is unprecedented in size and duration. Since the outbreak was recognized in March 2014, the World Health Organization (WHO) has reported 17,145 cases with 6,070 deaths, primarily in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. Combined data show a case-fatality rate of approximately 70% in patients with a recorded outcome; a 30% survival rate means that thousands of patients have survived Ebola. An important component of a comprehensive Ebola response is the reintegration of Ebola survivors into their communities.

The distribution and interaction of haemoglobin variants and the beta thalassaemia gene in Liberia.

In a population survey in Liberia, West Africa, 12 major tribes were examined for the prevalence of Hb S, Hb C, and the beta thalassaemia (beta Thal) gene. Hb C is rare; Hb S and beta Thal occur in polymorphic frequencies. The distribution of both genes shows an inverse correlation. The beta Thal trait was diagnosed by quantitation of Hb A2 on DE 52-microchromatography. This method proved to be reliable and useful for mass screening.

Sickle cell-beta +-thalassaemia: a haematological and clinical study in Liberia.

Clinical and haematological features of 20 patients of several Liberian ethnic groups with sickle cell-beta +-thalassaemia are reported. Haemoglobin analysis showed increased Hb A2 values, high Hb A levels (median 25%), variable amounts of Hb F and a slight imbalance of non alpha/alpha globin chain synthesis ratios. The clinical and other haematological findings varied but the disease seems to run a relatively mild course in the majority of the patients.

Commentary: restarting NTD programme activities after the Ebola outbreak in Liberia.

It is widely known that the recent Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in West Africa caused a serious disruption to the national health system, with many of ongoing disease focused programmes, such as mass drug administration (MDA) for onchocerciasis (ONC), lymphatic filariasis (LF) and schistosomiasis (SCH), being suspended or scaled-down. As these MDA programmes attempt to restart post-EVD it is important to understand the challenges that may be encountered. This commentary addresses the opinions of the major health sectors involved, as well as those of community members, regarding logistic needs and

Pre-Ebola virus disease laboratory system and related challenges in Liberia.

Prior to the Ebola virus disease outbreak in Liberia, the laboratory system was duplicative, fragmented and minimally coordinated. The National Reference Laboratory was conceptualised to address the existing challenges by promoting the implementation of effective and sustainable laboratory services in Liberia. However, in a resource-limited environment such as Liberia, progress regarding the rebuilding of the health system can be relatively slow, while efforts to sustain the transient gains remain a key challenge for the Ministry of Health. In this paper, we describe the pre-Ebola virus diseas

Endemic Lassa fever in Liberia. III. Characterization of Lassa virus isolates.

Sixty-three virus isolates were obtained by inoculation of Vero cells with sera from 50 hospital in-patients in Liberia with acute febrile illnesses. 57 of the isolates were presumptively identified as Lassa virus (LV) by direct fluorescent antibody (DFA) staining of inoculated Vero cells. These, and six additional isolates obtained only by titration of supernatant fluids from inoculated Vero cells, were definitively identified as LV in a neutralization test. Two additional LV isolates were obtained from a patient's sera from Nigeria. By cross-neutralization tests, the Nigerian LV strains were

Multilevel analysis of anemia and associated factors among women of reproductive age (15-49 years) in Liberia: Evidence from the 2019/20 Liberia demographic and health survey data.

BACKGROUND: Anemia is a global public health problem, principally affecting young children and reproductive-age mothers. Although anemia is a main public health concern in low-income countries, there is no evidence about its prevalence and associated factors among women of reproductive age in Liberia. Thus, the purpose of this study was to identify the prevalence and associated factors of anemia among women of reproductive age in Liberia. METHODS: We used the data extracted from the fifth Liberia Demographic and Health Survey (LDHS-V) that were carried out between October 2019 and February 20

The Ebola crisis and people with disabilities' access to healthcare and government services in Liberia.

BACKGROUND: There has been little research on the impact of the 2014-2015 West African Ebola crisis on people with disabilities. This paper outlines the way in which the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in Liberia in 2015 highlighted existing inequalities and exclusion of people with disabilities and their households. METHODS: The results presented here are part of a larger ESRC/DFID-funded mixed methods research project in Liberia (2014-2017) which included a quantitative household survey undertaken in five counties, complemented by qualitative focus group discussions and interviews with p

Stigma and Ebola survivorship in Liberia: Results from a longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Survivors of the 2014-2016 West Africa Ebola epidemic have been reported to suffer high levels of stigmatization after return to their communities. We sought to characterize the stigma encountered by a cohort of Ebola survivors in Liberia over time. METHODS: Ebola-related stigma was assessed from June 2015 to August 2017 in 299 adolescent and adult Liberian Ebola Survivor Cohort participants at three month intervals using adapted HIV stigma scales scored from 0 to 10 according to the proportion of answers indicating stigmatization. FINDINGS: The median time from Ebola Virus Disea

Reflections on Leadership and Governance from the Incident Manager of Liberia's Ebola Response.

The 2014-2016 epidemic of Ebola virus disease occurred in a region with a recent history of civil war, unstable health systems, and widespread poverty. Despite these contextual challenges, the national Ebola response in Liberia controlled transmission under strong leadership that was able to rapidly coordinate activities, to manage local and international players, and to adapt upon recognizing missteps. Such leadership has persisted to improve public health capacity in post-Ebola Liberia. This article highlights the progress made toward developing a resilient health security system with capaci

An Improved Ward Architecture for Treatment of Patients with Ebola Virus Disease in Liberia.

During the recent outbreak of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in west Africa, we established an Ebola treatment center (ETC) with improved ward architecture. The ETC was built with movable prefabricated boards according to infectious disease unit standard requirements. The clinical staff ensured their own security while providing patients with effective treatment. Of the 180 admissions to the ETC, 10 cases were confirmed with EVD of which six patients survived. None of the clinical staff was infected. We hope that our experience will enable others to avoid unnecessary risks while delivering EVD care

Parents make the difference: a randomized-controlled trial of a parenting intervention in Liberia.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of a brief parenting intervention, 'Parents Make the Difference'(PMD), on parenting behaviors, quality of parent-child interactions, children's cognitive, emotional, and behavioral wellbeing, and malaria prevention behaviors in rural, post-conflict Liberia. METHODS: A sample of 270 caregivers of children ages 3-7 were randomized into an immediate treatment group that received a 10-session parent training intervention or a wait-list control condition (1:1 allocation). Interviewers administered baseline and 1-month post-interven

Community-centered responses to Ebola in urban Liberia: the view from below.

BACKGROUND: The West African Ebola epidemic has demonstrated that the existing range of medical and epidemiological responses to emerging disease outbreaks is insufficient, especially in post-conflict contexts with exceedingly poor healthcare infrastructures. In this context, community-based responses have proven vital for containing Ebola virus disease (EVD) and shifting the epidemic curve. Despite a surge in interest in local innovations that effectively contained the epidemic, the mechanisms for community-based response remain unclear. This study provides baseline information on community-b

Identity of Trypanozoon stocks isolated from man and a domestic dog in Liberia.

The isoenzyme patterns (electrophoresis on thin-layer starch gel) and the human serum resistance (blood incubation infectivity test) of a Trypanozoon stock from a dog and 14 stocks from man in Liberia were examined. The complete conformity of criteria for man-infectivity of the dog stock with 5 human stocks and the very close similarity to the 9 remaining stocks from the same epidemiological locality indicates the dog as a reservoir host of gambiense sleeping sickness.

The prevalence of onchocerciasis on selected divisions of the Firestone Rubber Plantation, Harbel, Liberia.

A survey for the prevalence of onchocerciasis was conducted on selected divisions of the Firestone Rubber Plantation, Harbel , Liberia, in November 1980. Divisions 19, 22, 23, and 36 are located in the north-central portion of the plantation, and were selected to complement transmission studies which were performed there in 1979 and 1980. Biopsy of the calf, iliac crest, and shoulder was done on a total of 583 individuals. No lateral difference in microfilarial density was observed. A prevalence of 80.8% was found. Prevalence appeared to be equal between the sexes, and to plateau above 35 year

Human paragonimiasis caused by Paragonimus uterobilateralis in Liberia and Guinea, West Africa.

In the children from Liberia and one woman from Guinea an infection with the lung fluke Paragonimus uterobilateralis was diagnosed, being the first cases of human paragonimiasis recorded in these two West African countries. Species determination was based on measurements and morphological structure of the parasite ova isolated from sputum and stool of the patients, and supported by biological and epidemiological evidence of the occurrence of this parasite species in natural animal hosts and P. uterobilateralis--metacercariae in freshwater crab populations in various parts of Liberia.
