Benign mesenteric lipomatous tumor in a child: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Lipomatous tumors are the most common type of soft-tissue tumors. Benign lipomatous tumors are lipomas and lipoblastoma. We herein report a case of benign mesenteric lipomatous tumor and the largest collection of known benign mesenteric lipomatous tumors in children in the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: A 3-year-old girl presented with repeated dull abdominal pain and left abdominal mass swelling. On a physical examination, the child had a soft, moderately distended left abdomen that was not tender when palpated. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a la

Correlated expression of HMGA2 and PLAG1 in thyroid tumors, uterine leiomyomas and experimental models.

In pleomorphic adenomas of the salivary glands (PASG) recurrent chromosomal rearrangements affecting either 8q12 or 12q14∼15 lead to an overexpression of the genes of the genuine transcription factor PLAG1 or the architectural transcription factor HMGA2, respectively. Both genes are also affected by recurrent chromosomal rearrangements in benign adipocytic tumors as e. g. lipomas and lipoblastomas. Herein, we observed a strong correlation between the expression of HMGA2 and PLAG1 in 14 benign and 23 malignant thyroid tumors. To address the question if PLAG1 can be activated by HMGA2, the expre

Lipoma of the Larynx and Other Differential Diagnoses.

Fatty lesions in the head and neck region are uncommon but can present in any subsite, including rarely the larynx. Most commonly, the fatty lesion is a benign lipoma and an incidental finding as in this case. However, the lesion must be differentiated from other fatty lesions such as liposarcoma, lipoblastoma, and hibernoma. Accurate diagnosis on imaging can prevent unnecessary biopsy and more importantly worry for the patient. We report a case of an incidental lipoma within the vocal folds of the larynx.

Rare lipomatous tumor of the posterior mediastinum in children.

The mediastinum is a unique anatomic area containing various structures and pluripotent cells, which allow for the development of a range of tumors. We report two pediatric cases of a lipomatous tumor of the posterior mediastinum. Complete surgical excision of the mass in each was achieved through a lateral thoracotomy. Histopathologic findings showed a lipoma in one case and a lipoblastoma in the other. A lipomatous tumor in the posterior mediastinum is extremely rare and preoperative diagnosis is difficult. When an operative plan is being considered, the presence of a potentially malignant t

Lipoblastomatosis: case report and review of the literature.

PURPOSE: To describe an unusual presentation of lipoblastomatosis and review the existing literature on lipoblastomatosis and lipoblastoma. METHODS: Case report and literature review. RESULTS: A 9-year-old girl was originally diagnosed as having preseptal cellulitis. After failure of systemic therapy, a CT scan showed a mass in the orbit. Biopsy of the lesion confirmed the presence of lipoblastomatosis, consisting of immature lipoblasts admixed with more-mature adipocytes. CONCLUSIONS: Lipoblastomatosis is a rare benign diffuse lipomatous tumor of embryonal fat that is uncommonly found in t

Pediatric tumors of the parapharyngeal space. Three case reports and a literature review.

Three cases of pediatric primary parapharyngeal space tumors, namely a Burkitt's lymphoma, lipoblastoma and a ganglioneuroma are described here, along with a literature review. These disorders are very rare, accounting for less than 20% of all parapharyngeal neoplasms. In comparison to adults, there are differences in pathomorphologic spectrum of pediatric parapharyngeal tumors. The authors describe the prevalence of malignant tumors, mainly soft tissues sarcomas. The salivary gland tumors and paragangliomas which dominate in adult populations, are extremely rare in pediatric populations where

From the archives of the AFIP: benign musculoskeletal lipomatous lesions.

Benign lipomatous lesions involving soft tissue are common musculoskeletal masses that are classified into nine distinct diagnoses: lipoma, lipomatosis, lipomatosis of nerve, lipoblastoma or lipoblastomatosis, angiolipoma, myolipoma of soft tissue, chondroid lipoma, spindle cell lipoma and pleomorphic lipoma, and hibernoma. Soft-tissue lipoma accounts for almost 50% of all soft-tissue tumors. Radiologic evaluation is diagnostic in up to 71% of cases. These lesions are identical to subcutaneous fat on computed tomographic (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) images and may contain thin septa. Lipom

Fat-containing soft-tissue masses of the extremities.

The authors review the radiologic spectrum of fat-containing soft-tissue masses of the extremities, with emphasis on computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and pathologic correlation. These masses include both common and uncommon, benign and malignant lesions, such as lipoma, intramuscular and intermuscular lipoma, neural fibrolipoma, lipoblastoma, lipomatosis, hibernoma, hemangioma, elastofibroma, and liposarcoma, as well as lesions that may mimic fat-containing soft-tissue masses. Imaging studies of fat-containing lesions will often allow a specific presumptive diagnosis. When a sp

Classification of benign fatty tumours of the upper limb.

In this paper, the authors offer a classification of benign fatty tumours of the upper limb. There are three histologically distinct types of fat cells: immature fat cells which give rise to lipoblastomas, mature brown fat cells which give rise to hibernomas and mature white fat cells which give rise to lipomas. Lipomas are the most common and they are sub-classified according to the anatomic site of fat cells into dermal, subcutaneous and sub-fascial lipomas; or tumours directly related to muscle, bone, synovium or nerve. Finally, the authors review 67 patients with benign fatty tumours of th

Giant Perineal Plexiform Neurofibroma in an 8-Year-Old African Male.

The perineal presentation of plexiform neurofibroma is exceptional, with only two cases reported to date. We present an 8-year-old African male with a large perineal tumor of years of evolution. He had no associated symptoms. Café au lait stains were observed on examination, without other findings of relevance. The patient had no preoperative radiological studies. Partial excision of the lesion was performed. Histopathological study of the specimen revealed a plexiform neurofibroma. The lack of diagnostic suspicion due to the atypical nature of the location, the anatomical complexity of surgic

Lipomatous tumours of the face in infants: diagnosis and treatment.

PURPOSE: The aim of this review is to present the different lipomatous tumours of the face typically found in infants. Lipomatous tumours induce a diagnostic challenge due to the low frequency, and the fact that the different lipomatous tumours mimic each other. METHOD: This study developed a flowchart for use in the evaluation of these tumours, including congenital infiltrating lipomatosis of the face, lipoblastomas, and liposarcomas. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: The clinical presentation, histological features, imaging characteristics and treatment options are covered. It is suggested that a c

Benign lipoblastomalike tumor of the vulva: report of a case affecting a young patient.

BACKGROUND: Mesenchymal vulvar tumors are rare, and a benign lipoblastomalike tumor may be confused with malignancy. CASE: A 15-year-old patient consulted for a right labium tumefaction measuring 15 cm. After excision, histologic examination revealed a well-circumscribed and lobulated tumor. The lobules were composed of slender spindle cells showing slightly eosinophilic cytoplasm with indistinct boundaries, uniform nuclei with finely granular chromatin and no nucleoli. Scattered Signet-ring-type lipoblasts were observed. The background was myxoid, with a "chickenwire" capillary vascular netw

Lipoblastomatosis: An unusual midline neck mass in a young child.

Lipoblastomatosis is an extremely rare condition and is often not recognized prior to final pathologic analysis. In this case, a two-year-old female child presented with a non-tender, submental midline neck mass which had enlarged very slowly over the course of five months. The differential diagnosis included lipoma, lymphatic malformation, and thyroglossal duct cycst and a surgical excision was planned. The child was consented for a possible Sistrunk procedure if necessary. Intraoperatively, the mass was adherent to the hyoid bone and clear mucoid drainage was noted during resection leading t

Update on Superficial Lipomatous Tumors, Emerging Entities and Molecular Correlation.

Lipomatous tumors are among the most common mesenchymal neoplasms. They exhibit significant variability in histologic features, anatomic location, and clinical behavior. This review focuses on superficial lipomatous neoplasms. In practice, most of the superficial lipomatous tumors are benign with possible potential for local recurrence; however, atypical and fully malignant lipomatous tumors do occur in superficial locations and may be overlooked as differential diagnosis consideration. In addition to review of histologic features of classic lipomatous tumors such as lipoma, angiolipoma and at

[Cervical thymus. A case report and literature review].

In a 1 month-old healthy newborn, a submaxilar solid tumor was palpated. Gestation and delivery were normal and he was asymptomatic. At 9 months of age, surgery was decided and uneventfully performed. The diagnosis was ectopic thymic tissue, an infrequent cause of cervical tumor. Remnants of the thymus can remain anywhere between the pharynx and the lower neck, all the way through the cervical migration pathway of the thymus. An ectopic thymic remnant can be solid or cystic, and should be considered among other cervical masses in children, such as lymphatic malformations ("lymphangiomas"), vas

Imaging of the unusual pediatric 'blastomas'.

'Blastomas' are tumors virtually unique to childhood. Controversy surrounds their nomenclature and there is no globally accepted classification. They are thought to arise from immature, primitive tissues that present persistent embryonal elements on histology, affect a younger pediatric population and are usually malignant. The 'commoner' blastomas (neuroblastoma, nephroblastoma, hepatoblastoma, medulloblastoma) account for approximately 25% of solid tumors in the pediatric age range. We present examples of the more unusual blastematous pediatric tumors (lipoblastoma, osteoblastoma, chondrobla

Complete Posterior Sagittal Anorectal Mobilization (PSAM): A new surgical approach for pediatric pelvic-perineal tumor resections.

INTRODUCTION: Diffuse or massive tumors involving the perineal and pelvic compartments may require aggressive surgical treatment in children. The authors, propose and present their results using a Posterior Sagittal Anorectal Mobilization (PSAM) METHODS: The oncologic patient is placed in a prone position with the pelvis elevated, without a previous colostomy. A 10 Ch bladder catheter is positioned. A midline sagittal incision is performed from the coccyx to the posterior margin of the anus. Fine electrocautery is used to obtain an accurate dissection all around the anal margin itself. The inc

Subdermal fibrous hamartoma of infancy: pathology of 40 cases and differential diagnosis.

Forty subdermal fibrous hamartomas of infancy occurred in 29 males and 11 females who were 7 months to 4 years of age at surgery. At least 4 were congenital. The lesions were situated in axilla, chest wall, and breast (17 cases); abdominal wall, inguinal region, and scrotum (8); buttock and lower limb (6); upper limb (4); neck and scalp (3); and low back (2). They were 0.7 to 10 cm, ill defined, and five underwent reexcision, which was curative in all. All had the characteristic mixture of fibrous and adipose tissue and nests of immature mesenchyme in different proportions, and nearly all show
