Lymphatic malformation/lymphangioma of the scrotum is rare. It is caused by lymphatic abnormalities and the most common sites are the neck and axilla. The scrotum is one of the most uncommon sites. We report the case of a 12-year-old boy with pathologically confirmed cystic lymphangioma/lymphatic malformation in the scrotum. The diagnosis was suspected from ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging. The most common cause of a cystic mass in the scrotum is scrotal hydrocele, but cystic lymphangioma/lymphatic malformation should be considered as a differential diagnosis for multicystic scro

Peripheral oedema is commonly seen in the yellow nail syndrome (YNS). Contrast lymphangiography has shown abnormal collecting lymphatics in some patients with YNS. In this study, lymphatic function in the upper and lower limbs of 17 patients with YNS, in normal controls, and in patients with established classical lymphoedema, has been assessed using quantitative lymphoscintigraphy. Nine subjects with YNS had swelling of the legs and two had features typical of lymphoedema. The lymphatic drainage was significantly reduced in the legs of patients with YNS but not to the level seen in lymphoedema

The authors review the current understanding of lymphatic anatomy and physiology, and the pathophysiology of lymphedema. The skin lymphatic system consists of the initial lymphatics, which converge into lymphatic precollectors, collectors and lymphatic ducts; these in turn convey the lymph to the regional lymph nodes. Interstitial fluid and particles enter the initial lymphatics through interendothelial openings and by vesicular transport. Lymphatic uptake is enhanced by external compression. Lymphatic transport depends greatly on contraction of lymphangions, which generate the suction force t

Dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance lymphangiography is a novel technique to image central conducting lymphatics. It is performed by injecting contrast into groin lymph nodes and following passage of contrast through lymphatic system using T1-weighted MR images. Currently, it has been successfully applied to image and plan treatment of thoracic duct pathologies, lymphatic leaks, and other lymphatic abnormalities such as plastic bronchitis. It is useful in the assessment of chylothorax and chyloperitoneum. Its role in other areas such as intestinal lymphangiectasia and a variety of lym

The chromosomal abnormality 6q-, associated with acute lymphatic leukemia, is often found both in T cell form and in non T non B cell forms. The absence of chromosome -5, frequently associated with acute non-lymphatic leukemia of the adult, has been rarely found in the acute non-lymphatic leukemia of the child. Trisomy of chromosome 21 is the most associated with acute non-lymphatic leukemia of the adult, has been rarely found in the acute non-lymphatic leukemia of the child. Trisomy of chromosome 21 is the most frequent alteration found in children and adult with acute lymphatic leukemia. In

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to evaluate the whole axillary status of patients with breast cancer by lymphatic contrast-enhanced ultrasound (LCEUS).
METHODS: LCEUS was applied for 169 patients with suspected breast cancer. Abnormal patterns in lymphatic channels, sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs), and non-enhanced but abnormal lymph nodes were investigated. The signs of distorted, attenuated, netted, or interrupted lymphatic channels, defective-filling or no-filling SLNs, and the appearance of non-enhanced but abnormal lymph nodes were designated as features of axillary metastasis. The lymphatic system is crucial for the maintenance of interstitial fluid and protein homeostasis. It has important roles in collecting excess plasma and interstitial fluid leaked from blood vessels, lipid absorption and transportation in the digestive system, and immune surveillance and response. The development of lymphatic vessels begins during fetal life as lymphatic endothelial progenitor cells first differentiate into lymphatic endothelial cells (LECs) by expressing the master lymphatic vascular regulator, prospero-related homeobox 1 (PROX1). The lymphatic vasculature forms a hierarchica

We present the case of a patient with Noonan's syndrome and massive nonimmune hydrops fetalis in whom lymphangiography was performed in the neonatal period. This demonstrated generalised lymphatic dysplasia, and we suggest a mechanism by which the lymphatic abnormalities in Noonan's syndrome may arise.

Lymphatic recanalization failure after lymphadenectomy constitutes a major risk of lymphedema in cancer surgery. It has been reported that GATA2, a zinc finger transcription factor, is expressed in lymphatic endothelial cells and is involved in the development of fetal lymphatic vessels. GATA3, another member of the GATA family of transcription factors, is required for the differentiation of lymphoid tissue inducer (LTi) cells and is essential for lymph node formation. However, how GATA2 and GATA3 function in recanalization after the surgical extirpation of lymphatic vessels has not been eluci

The lymphatic system is essential for lipid absorption/transport from the digestive system, maintenance of tissue fluid and protein homeostasis, and immune surveillance. Despite recent progress toward understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the formation of the lymphatic vascular system, the nature of lymphatic vessel abnormalities and disease in humans is complex and poorly understood. The mature lymphatic vasculature forms a hierarchical network in which lymphatic endothelial cells (LECs) are joined by functionally specialized cell-cell junctions to maintain the integr

Radionuclide lymphoscintigraphy is a useful technique for differentiating lymphedema from other causes of swelling, and may sometimes be useful for delineating collateral lymphatics, the level of obstruction, and the presence of lymphoceles or abnormal collections of lymphatic vessels, if they communicate sufficiently with normal lymphatic vessels. Standardization of technique is important to provide better intrapatient and even interpatient comparison. Symmetry, numbers, and locations of lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes, abnormal collections, and dermal collaterals are helpful in the qualitativ

Cystic hygroma and lymphangioma, currently defined as 'lymphatic malformations', are developmental abnormalities of the lymphoid system with potential for rapid expansion. The management of these abnormalities depends on the site and extent of the lesion. A different disease is diffuse lymphangiomatosis. It is very rare at birth and its treatment remains controversial. A lymphatic malformation (cystic hygroma) of the neck of a newborn girl as the first sign of diffuse lymphangiomatosis and treatment of the latter condition with sirolimus are presented. A newborn girl with a presumed isolated l

Although lower extremity edema/lymphedema can result from venous and/or lymphatic abnormalities, effective treatment depends upon understanding their relative contributions to the condition. Herein we use near-infrared fluorescence lymphatic imaging in a 16 year-old female diagnosed with unilateral lymphedema of the right leg and previously treated with left iliac vein stenting in an attempt to alleviate lymphedema. The imaging shows that abnormal lymphatic anatomy, rather than venous occlusion, was likely responsible for unilateral swelling.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the role of radionuclide lymphoscintigraphy and dynamic magnetic resonance lymphangiography (MRL) for the diagnosis of extremity lymphedema.
METHODS: Sixteen patients with primary extremity lymphedema and two with Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome combined with lymphedema were examined by lymphoscintigraphy using the tracer 99Tc-labelled dextran, and also by MRL using gadobenate dimeglumine as contrast agent. The results of morphological abnormalities and functional state of the lymphatic system at affected limbs from the two imaging methods were compared.
RESULTS: Lymphatic v

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The essential role of the lymphatic system in fluid homeostasis, nutrient transport, and immune trafficking is well recognized; however, there is limited understanding of the mechanisms that regulate lymphatic function, particularly in the setting of critical illness. The lymphatics likely affect disease severity and progression in every condition, from severe systemic inflammatory states to respiratory failure. Here, we review structural and functional disorders of the lymphatic system, both congenital and acquired, as they relate to care of the pediatric patient in the int

BACKGROUND: Kaposiform lymphangiomatosis (KLA) is a complex lymphatic anomaly associated with a somatic activating NRAS p.Q61R (NRASQ61R) mutation. KLA is characterized by malformed lymphatic vessels that can lead to effusions and coagulopathy. The goal of this study was to generate an in vivo mouse model to determine if prenatal expression of the NrasQ61R mutation in lymphatic endothelial cells induces disease characteristics found in KLA patients.
PROCEDURE: A Cre-loxP system was used to conditionally express NrasQ61R in cells expressing lymphatic vessel endothelial hyaluronan receptor 1 (L

BACKGROUND: The lymphatic system is essential for maintaining the balance of interstitial fluid in tissues and for returning protein-rich fluids (lymph) to the bloodstream. Congenital lymphatic defects lead to accumulation of lymph in peripheral tissues and body cavities, termed primary lymphedema. To date, only a limited number of individual genes have been identified in association with primary lymphedema. However, variability of age of onset and severity of lymphatic abnormalities within some families suggests that multiple mutations or genes may be responsible, thus hampering efforts to id

The lymphatic system plays an integral part in fluid homeostasis. Disturbances in lymphatic pathways are congenital, posttraumatic, or posttreatment related, such as after Fontan palliation. Lymphatic pathway evaluation is challenging because of the difficulty in introducing contrast material into the lymphatics. Intranodal, intramesenteric, and intrahepatic dynamic contrast-enhanced MR lymphangiography (DCMRL) offer better visualization of major lymphatic pathways. However, these techniques exclude pathways outside the central conduction system, preventing the visualization of abnormalities a
