The PROMIS-10 Mental Health T-Score: An Independent Predictor of Recovery for Up to 1 Year After Elective Lumbar Spine Fusion.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective comparative cohort. OBJECTIVE: Investigate how mental health, as measured by the PROMIS-10 Global Mental Health T-Score (MHT), influences a patient's recovery up to 1 year after elective lumbar fusion. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Patients with mental health concerns in need of lumbar fusions have increased. Evidence suggests that mental disorders influence a patient's postoperative recovery; however, there is a paucity of information detailing the association between mental health and outcomes. METHODS: A total of 351 patients who underwent 1- or 2-level elective

Post-incident review after restraint in mental health care -a potential for knowledge development, recovery promotion and restraint prevention. A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Use of physical restraint is a common practice in mental healthcare, but is controversial due to risk of physical and psychological harm to patients and creating ethical dilemmas for care providers. Post-incident review (PIR), that involve patient and care providers after restraints, have been deployed to prevent harm and to reduce restraint use. However, this intervention has an unclear scientific knowledge base. Thus, the aim of this scoping review was to explore the current knowledge of PIR and to assess to what extent PIR can minimize restraint-related use and harm, support car

Can urban prosperity aid in recovery?: The relationship between healthcare workers' mental health status and the city level during the COVID-19 epidemic.

The mental health of healthcare workers during epidemics is a complex topic. The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) that occurred in late 2019 has become a global public health threat and provides an opportunity to investigate this topic. Based on a large-scale investigation of Chinese healthcare workers during the COVID-19 epidemic, the article tests the assumption that the socioeconomic level of a city affects the mental health status of healthcare workers. The result is interesting and important: the mental health status of this population differs based on the city level. Hospi

Sport-based interventions for post-disaster mental health and psychosocial recovery: a multi-level systematic review and meta-analysis within the MHPSS framework.

Disasters and humanitarian crises affect both individual mental health and broader psychosocial functioning, but these outcome domains are not interchangeable. This systematic review and meta-analysis examined structured sport-, exercise-, play-, yoga/body-awareness-, physical-education-, and sport-for-protection-based interventions within a mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) framework. Web of Science Core Collection, PubMed, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar were searched for studies published from January 1, 2000, through November 1, 2025. Eligible populations wer

Evaluation of a pro-recovery training intervention (REFOCUS-RETAFORM) in specialist mental health services across France: stepped-wedge cluster randomised controlled trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: While recovery orientation is national policy in many countries, evidence remains limited for the effectiveness at a service level. This paper describes the protocol for implementing a pro-recovery training intervention (REFOCUS-RETAFORM) in specialist mental health services across France. The aim is to evaluate whether REFOCUS-RETAFORM plus usual care leads to improved outcomes for adolescent and adult mental health service users compared with usual care alone. METHODS: A two-step stepped wedge cluster randomised controlled trial will be conducted, with a nested qualitative sub-s

Do recovery outcome measures improve clinical practice? A linguistic analysis of the impact of the Hope, Agency and Opportunity measure in community mental health teams.

AIMS: Recovery approaches are identified as the overarching framework for improving mental health services for people with severe and enduring conditions. These approaches prioritise living well with long-term conditions, as evidenced by personal recovery outcomes. There is little research demonstrating how to support busy mental health teams, work in this way. This study assessed the impact of introducing a brief measure of recovery, the Hope, Agency and Opportunity (HAO), on the attitudes and behaviours of staff working in community mental health teams, to test whether routine use of such me

[A new structure for mental health and welfare in the Soso area to promote the recovery of people in Fukushima from the 3.11 earthquake and nuclear power plant accident].

Immediately after the 3.11 Earthquake and Fukushima Dai-Ichi Nuclear Power Plant Accident, 5 hospitals with psychiatric beds within a 30-km radius of the nuclear power plant were ordered to move their inpatients to other hospitals outside the 30-km zone. As a result, more than 800 inpatients in total were transferred to other hospitals within or outside Fukushima Prefecture, and the 5 hospitals were closed. In addition, 3 psychiatric clinics within the 30-km radius stopped operating temporarily. In March of 2011, several volunteer members of the Department of Neuropsychiatry and the Mental Hea

Long-Term Outcomes After Severe Acute Brain Injury Requiring Mechanical Ventilation: Recovery Trajectories Among Patients and Mental Health Symptoms of Their Surrogate Decision Makers.

BACKGROUND: Long-term outcomes of patients with severe acute brain injury (SABI) and their surrogate decision makers (SDMs) are insufficiently explored. METHODS: We conducted a prospective, single-center, observational study of patients with SABI who required mechanical ventilation between September and November 2021. Two telephonic interviews were conducted at 6-12 months and 18-24 months post SABI. Patients' functional outcomes at both time points were measured on the Glasgow Outcome Scale-Extended and categorized as dead (1), dependent (2-4), or independent (5-8). SDMs were interviewed at

The impact of shelter-in-place during the COVID-19 pandemic on social support for mental health recovery: A prescribing-oriented qualitative study of patient perspectives.

The COVID-19 pandemic created unprecedented challenges for social connectivity and mental health, especially during mandated shelter-in-place periods. For patients engaged in mental health treatment, the social impact of their shelter-in-place experience remains an area of active investigation. This is particularly relevant in the context of social prescribing, a growing area of clinical intervention where healthcare providers actively refer patients to local social resources or activities to enhance mental health and wellbeing. Here, we investigated patient perspectives on their social suppor

Effectiveness of dual focus mutual aid for co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders: a review and synthesis of the "Double Trouble" in Recovery evaluation.

Over 5 million adults in the United States have a co-occurring substance use disorder and serious psychological distress. Mutual aid (self-help) can usefully complement treatment, but people with co-occurring substance use and psychiatric disorders often encounter a lack of empathy and acceptance in traditional mutual aid groups. Double Trouble in Recovery (DTR) is a dual focus fellowship whose mission is to bring the benefits of mutual aid to persons recovering from co-occurring disorders. An evaluation of DTR was conducted by interviewing 310 persons attending 24 DTR meetings in New York Cit

Cultural Adaptation and Implementation Strategy of a Recovery-Oriented Mental Health Training Intervention (REFOCUS-THAIREC) for Healthcare Workers in Thailand: An Experience-Based Co-Design.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare workers are key in supporting mental health recovery, though the approach is poorly understood in many Asian countries. In Thailand, no recovery-oriented training currently exists, highlighting the need for a culturally adapted intervention that incorporates locally meaningful concepts and clarifies unfamiliar recovery principles. The present study aimed to culturally adapt an existing recovery training intervention (REFOCUS/REFOCUS-PULSAR) for use by healthcare workers in Thailand (REFOCUS-THAIREC). METHODS: Experience-Based Co-Design (EBCD) was used to culturally adap

Long-term mental health and resilience of the first responders in Japanese ground self-defense forces engaging body recovery after the great east Japan earthquake.

Handling human remains is extremely difficult and stressful task, and it can contribute to the development of stress-related mental health problems. To prevent disaster from the development of mental disorders in first responders, it will be important to elucidate factors sustaining psychological well-being following the events requiring handling of human remains. Japanese Ground Self-Defense Forces (JGSDF) first responders (n = 146), involved in human remains recovery after the Great East Japan Earthquake (GEJE) participated. We examined the psychological resilience (S-H Resilience Test), dep

Effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of community perinatal mental health services on access, experience, recovery/relapse and obstetric and neonate outcomes: the ESMI-II mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal mental health disorders affect one in five mothers during pregnancy or within 2 years post childbirth. These disorders can lead to poor pregnancy and childbirth outcomes and maternal deaths. Additionally, they negatively affect a child's cognitive, social and emotional development. Stigma and a lack of specialised services have limited access to mental health care. National Health Service England invested £365M in community perinatal mental health teams, but their impact on women and infants' outcomes are not known. Develop a taxonomy of community perinatal mental health

Mental Health Recovery of Evacuees and Residents from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant Accident after Seven Years-Contribution of Social Network and a Desirable Lifestyle.

The 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident resulted in the exposure to radiation and evacuation, which has created psychological distress among the Fukushima residents. With the provision of multi-faceted support and the progress of the reconstruction, their mental health has appeared to show signs of recovery. However, there have been few studies investigating their recovery. To clarify the related factors associated with mental health recovery, a cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted. Subjects whose answers were associated with Resilience, Recovery, and Remitting patterns of mental hea

"And Now that I Feel Safe…I'm Coming Out of Fight or Flight": A Qualitative Exploration of Challenges and Opportunities for Residents' Mental Health in Substance Use Recovery Housing.

Co-occurring mental health concerns are prevalent among substance use recovery housing residents. We sought to explore how residents with co-occurring mental health and substance use needs experience recovery housing. We conducted semi-structured interviews with residents (N = 92) in recovery homes across Texas and developed themes through thematic analysis. Residents note that living in a group home can exacerbate anxiety and paranoia, especially during periods of high turnover. Overwhelmingly, however, residents believe recovery housing improves their mental health. Residents use their share
