Rituximab or cyclosporine A for the treatment of membranous nephropathy: economic evaluation of the MENTOR trial.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: The MENTOR trial (MEmbranous Nephropathy Trial Of Rituximab) showed that rituximab was noninferior to cyclosporine in inducing complete or partial remission of proteinuria and was superior in maintaining proteinuria remission. However, the cost of rituximab may prohibit first-line use for some patients and health-care payers. METHODS: A Markov model was used to determine the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) of rituximab compared with cyclosporine for the treatment membranous nephropathy from the perspective of a health-care payer with a lifetime time hori

Neurologic and neuroscience education: Mitigating neurophobia to mentor health care providers.

Neurologic disorders are among the most frequent causes of morbidity and mortality in the United States. Moreover, the current shortfall of neurologists is expected to worsen over the coming decade. As a consequence, many patients with neurologic disorders will be treated by physicians and primary care providers without formal neurologic training. Furthermore, a pervasive and well-described fear of neurology, termed neurophobia, has been identified in medical student cohorts, residents, and among general practitioners. In this article, members of the American Academy of Neurology A.B. Baker Se

Mothers and Mentors: Exploring Perinatal Addiction and Recovery Through Digital Storytelling.

Substance use disorders (SUDs) are a growing problem for pregnant and parenting women. Woman-to-woman peer support may positively influence perinatal outcomes but little is known about the impact of such support on the women who are providing support. The purpose of this study was to describe experiences of addiction in pregnancy, recovery, and subsequently serving as a peer mentor to other pregnant women with active SUD among women in recovery in a rural setting. We conducted one digital storytelling workshop with five women serving as peer mentors with lived experience of perinatal SUD. The

Implementing a professional youth mentoring program during times of crisis: lessons from the global pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted traditional youth mentoring practices as social distancing limited in-person interactions. This study analyzes how Friends of the Children (FOTC), a professional mentoring program, was able to maintain engagement with mentees during the pandemic. Using a sample of 112 youth (58% Black/African American) with an average age of 12.5, this study investigated how FOTC continued to support mentees during this period. The amount of time and types of activities mentors engaged in with youth before, during, and after the pandemic were assessed to gauge how service delive

Cascade mentoring: a proposal for transforming radiology education in line with the European training curriculum.

Although mentoring remains a fundamental part of medical training, the traditional approach of a senior mentor guiding a junior trainee often fails to meet the diverse and evolving needs of learners in radiology. While peer and near-peer mentoring approaches have shown promise, they often lack a scalable, structured framework. We present a cascade mentoring model embedded within the radiology training environment, in which senior trainees mentor junior residents, who then supervise undergraduate learners. This model is aligned with the European Society of Radiology's (ESR) competency-based fra

Managing transitions: a qualitative study of undergraduate international nursing students' experience of a mentoring program.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: International nursing students (INS) enhance the diversity of the professional nursing workforce and offer universities substantial cultural, academic, economic, and social advantages. However, INS frequently face challenges in their educational experiences, particularly when targeted support is lacking. Guided by Bridges’ Transition Framework, this study examines the roles of a mentoring program on the academic, social, and personal development of undergraduate INS. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with seven participants (four mentors and three mentees)

Development of a patient-centered peer-mentoring program for kidney transplant patients: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: End-stage kidney disease (ESKD) causes physical and mental challenges to affected patients that complicates their ability to manage pre-transplant medical care. Patients benefit from both education about their treatment options, and social support. Peers can address these needs if provided with suitable instruction and direction. This study identified patient-centered components of a peer-mentoring program for kidney transplant recipients based on the input from recipients and providers. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured videoconferences with kidney transplant recipients (KTRs

Friends in Our Lives: Perspectives of Young People Who Participated in a Professional Mentoring Program.

Mentoring programs are popular interventions to support holistic development for young people. One specific model of mentoring that has emerged over the past few decades in the United States is professional mentoring. Research has illustrated that this model of mentoring may be particularly helpful for young people who could benefit from extra support in their lives that a volunteer mentoring program does not have the capacity to provide. Despite the emerging utilization of professional mentoring programs, little is known about the ideal characteristics of a professional mentor and young peopl

Learning a MIPO technique for distal radius fractures: Mentoring versus simple experience versus deliberate practice.

BACKGROUND: Performance skills of a surgeon for a specific surgical technique range from 1 (novice) to 5 (expert). Mentoring can bring the surgeon to level 3. Simple experience rarely allows achievement of level 5, in contrast to deliberate practice, in which performance skills are improved by setting learning goals based on feedback about the trainee's previous performance. HYPOTHESIS: When learning a technique for the internal fixation of distal radius fractures, the level of performance skills achieved is higher with deliberate practice than with mentoring or simple experience. Inverse association of natural mentoring relationship with distress mental health in children orphaned by AIDS.

BACKGROUND: The magnitude of the AIDS-orphaned children crisis in sub-Saharan Africa has so overstretched the resource of most families that the collapse of fostering in the sub-region seems imminent (UNICEF, 2003), fueling the need for a complementary/alternative care. This paper examines the probability of the natural mentoring care to ameliorate distress mental health in children orphaned by AIDS. METHODS: 952 children, mean age about 14 years, from local community schools and child-care centers in Kampala (Uganda) and Mafikeng/Klerksdorp (South Africa) towns participated in the study. The

Young adults with cerebral palsy as research partners - a qualitative evaluation of a mentoring program.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Research which will have a meaningful impact for young people with CP needs to be informed by individuals with lived experience so that issues and outcomes that are important for people with CP are prioritized. These consumer research partners (CRP) may experience barriers and facilitators which influence the productivity and authenticity of their involvement. A mentor program was implemented to support young adults with cerebral palsy (CP) in their roles as CRP. This study aimed to explore the mentor program from the perspectives of the CRP and mentors regarding aspe

The benefits, barriers and facilitators of mentoring programs for first-year doctors: A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: The transition from medical student to first-year doctor is notoriously difficult, yielding a high rate of transition failure, burn-out and mental health deterioration. Doctors in this cohort experience unique challenges during this time, which manifest through performance gaps, issues of professional identity, new occupational pressures, and cultural expectations. Mentoring programs are commonly utilised in the medical profession to foster personal and professional development and improve psychosocial well-being and career satisfaction. However, there exist no systematic reviews

Peer mentoring program through a digital platform for people with systemic sclerosis: A feasibility study.

OBJECTIVE: People with systemic sclerosis (SSc or scleroderma), a rare chronic autoimmune disease, often face significant physical and emotional challenges. Peer mentoring, where someone with similar lived experiences offers guidance and support, shows promise in enhancing the well-being of recipients and may benefit individuals with systemic sclerosis. This study aims to evaluate the feasibility and potential health effects of peer mentoring through a digital platform for people with systemic sclerosis. METHODS: We conducted a one-group study to evaluate a 16-week peer mentoring program for

Natural mentoring relationships among survivors of caregiver childhood abuse: findings from the Add Health Study.

Social support promotes resilience to adverse childhood events, but little is known about the role of natural mentors-caring, nonparental adults-in the lives of childhood abuse survivors. The current study draws from a large, longitudinal, nationally representative sample (Add Health) to examine the prevalence and characteristics of natural mentoring relationships for adolescents with a history of caregiver childhood abuse, and the extent to which these relationships are associated with psychological and health outcomes in adulthood. Among the sample (n = 12,270), 28.82% and 4.86% reported car

Becoming Bilingual in Science: What My Mentors Saw Before I Did.

Geriatric psychiatry, in particular, demands cross-disciplinary fluency because aging is at once biological, psychological, social, and structural. Effective mentorship, therefore, cultivates a kind of "bilingualism" in science--the ability to move across disciplinary languages while maintaining intellectual depth and authenticity. It anchors early-career scientists in their home discipline while intentionally exposing them to adjacent and even distant fields. When this occurs early in training (e.g., during the postdoctoral or K-award stage), it fosters careers defined by intellectual flexibi
