The mesenchymal stem cell profile in psoriasis.

BACKGROUND: The expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and the level of total oxyradical scavenging capacity have been evaluated extensively in the cutaneous cells of patients with psoriasis. As yet, no indications are available about the undifferentiated cells, the mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), isolated from skin. OBJECTIVES: To isolate MSCs in patients with psoriasis and to compare them with those obtained from atopic and healthy subjects, in order to analyse whether MSCs show some typical psoriatic profiles and to understand whet

Cancer cells enter dormancy after cannibalizing mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs).

Patients with breast cancer often develop malignant regrowth of residual drug-resistant dormant tumor cells years after primary treatment, a process defined as cancer relapse. Deciphering the causal basis of tumor dormancy therefore has obvious therapeutic significance. Because cancer cell behavior is strongly influenced by stromal cells, particularly the mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) that are actively recruited into tumor-associated stroma, we assessed the impact of MSCs on breast cancer cell (BCC) dormancy. Using 3D cocultures to mimic the cellular interactions of an emerging tumor n

Dental application potential of mesenchymal stromal cells and embryonic stem cells.

In the past decade, research on the potential applications of stem cells in dentistry has made great progress. There are at least five different types of multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) originating from exfoliated primary teeth, including dental pulp, apica papilla, periodontal ligament, and dental follicle. It has been reported that dental tissue-derived MSCs are able to generate dentine-pulp-like complexes as well as differentiate into periodontal and craniofacial progenitor cells. Similar to these dental tissue-derived MSCs, bone marrowderived MSCs are also capable of developin

Research progress on Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs), Adipose-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells (AD-MSCs), Drugs, and Vaccines in Inhibiting COVID-19 Disease.

Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs), and Adipose-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells (AD-MSCs) have been used for many years in regenerative medicine for clinical and surgical applications. Additionally, recent studies reported improved respiratory activity after intravenous administration of MSCs into patients affected by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) suggesting their role as anti-viral therapy. Severe COVID-19 patients usually progress to acute respiratory distress syndrome, sepsis, metabolic acidosis that is difficult to correct, coagulation dysfunction,

In vivo priming of human mesenchymal stem cells with hepatocyte growth factor-engineered mesenchymal stem cells promotes therapeutic potential for cardiac repair.

The clinical use of human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) has been hampered by their poor performance after transplantation into failing hearts. Here, to improve the therapeutic potential of BM-MSCs, we developed a strategy termed in vivo priming in which BM-MSCs are primed in vivo in myocardial infarction (MI)-induced hearts through genetically engineered hepatocyte growth factor-expressing MSCs (HGF-eMSCs) that are encapsulated within an epicardially implanted 3D cardiac patch. Primed BM-MSCs through HGF-eMSCs exhibited improved vasculogenic potential and cell viability,

Epidural Fat-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cell: First Report of Epidural Fat-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cell.

STUDY DESIGN: Experimental study. PURPOSE: To determine whether epidural fat (EF) tissue contains mesenchymal stem cells (MSC). OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE: Spine surgeons are unaware of the contents of EF tissue and the reason for its presence between the ligamentum flavum and the dura mater; therefore, EF tissues are routinely eliminated during surgical procedures. However, EF removal causes certain postoperative problems, such as post-laminectomy syndrome. We hypothesized that the EF tissue may play a significant supportive role for the neural structures and other nearby conditions. METHODS:

Systemic Effect of Thermo-Photobiomodulation on Mesenchymal Stem Cells.

The systemic effects of thermo-photobiomodulation (TPBM) on mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and influence of repeated sessions in vivo were studied. The impact of local laser irradiation (λ = 970 nm, moderate power) of rat tibial bone marrow on MSC counts in other bone marrow organs and in the spleen was evaluated. A significant temporary increase in MSCs counts after TPBM was found not only in the irradiated area, but also in distant tissues. Repeated irradiation enhanced MSC growth in the injured area compared to single session, highlighting the potential of repeated TPBM for regulating stem c

Research progress in heterogeneity of dental mesenchymal stem cells.

Dental tissues development involves two distinct cell lineages: mesenchymal cells (derived from the cranial neural crest) and epithelial cells (derived from oral ectoderm and pharyngeal epithelium). Emerging evidence highlights the remarkable functional heterogeneity of cranial neural crest-derived dental mesenchymal stem cells (DMSCs), exhibiting pluripotency, self-renewal, and differentiation capacities. This heterogeneity enables a single DMSC population to generate specialized subpopulations with unique roles in teeth and periodontal tissues formation. Significant progress has been made in

Multimodal Function of Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Psoriasis Treatment.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease mediated by the innate and adaptive immune systems, and its pathogenesis involves multiple aspects, including abnormal interleukin (IL)-23-Th17 axis, dysfunction of Tregs and other immune cells, and a complex relationship between keratinocytes and the vascular endothelium. Dysfunction of mesenchymal stem cells in psoriatic skin may also be the main reason for the dysregulated inflammatory response. Mesenchymal stem cells, a type of adult stem cells with multidifferentiation potential, are involved in the regulation of multiple links and targets in th

Gingival mesenchymal stem cells: Biological properties and therapeutic applications.

Our understanding of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and their biological properties is steadily increasing, with more studies focusing on their therapeutic effects in the domains of immunology, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. MSCs may be derived from tissues such as bone marrow, adipose, the umbilical cord, as well as from dental tissues (e.g., tooth germ, dental follicle, pulp tissue of exfoliated deciduous and permanent teeth, apical papilla, periodontal ligament, gingiva, and alveolar bone). Gingival mesenchymal stem cells (GMSCs) are non-hematopoietic adult stem cells isolated

Mesenchymal Stem Cells: A Promising Treatment for Thymic Involution.

The thymus is the main immune organ in the body. However, the thymus gradually degenerates in early life, leading to a reduction in T-cell production and a decrease in immune function. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are a promising alternative for the treatment of thymus senescence due to their homing ability to the site of inflammation and their paracrine, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. However, the heterogeneity, difficulty of survival in vivo, short residence time, and low homing efficiency of the injected MSCs affect the clinical therapeutic effect. This article reviews stra

Mesenchymal stem cells in craniofacial reconstruction: a comprehensive review.

Craniofacial reconstruction faces many challenges, including high complexity, strong specificity, severe injury, irregular and complex wounds, and high risk of bleeding. Traditionally, the "gold standard" for treating craniofacial bone defects has been tissue transplantation, which involves the transplantation of bone, cartilage, skin, and other tissues from other parts of the body. However, the shape of craniofacial bone and cartilage structures varies greatly and is distinctly different from ordinary long bones. Craniofacial bones originate from the neural crest, while long bones originate f

The Role of Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Cancer Immunotherapy.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are getting attention in the field of cancer immunotherapy. The main effects of MSCs on tumors are homing and regulation of inflammatory and immune responses. Indeed, cancer immunotherapy has become a promising treatment and MSCs play a potential role in regulating the efficacy of immunotherapy. In addition, MSCs are an ideal carrier for immunomodulatory protein transmission. As such MSCs combined with immunotherapy drugs could act synergistically against tumors, throwing a great impact on cancer therapy. And MSCs may have potential in the treatment of cytokine st

Mesenchymal Stem Cells: New Alternatives for Nervous System Disorders.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are self-renewing cells found in almost all postnatal organs and tissues in the perivascular region. These cells have a high capacity for mesodermal differentiation; however, numerous studies have shown that MSCs can also differentiate into cells of endodermal and ectodermal lineages. Due to this multilineage differentiation capacity, these cells could function as restoratives of various cell populations after transplantation. However, not only their differentiation potential makes them ideal candidates for this, but also a series of trophic properties that promot

Obesity and Wound Healing: Focus on Mesenchymal Stem Cells.

Chronic wounds represent nowadays a major challenge for both clinicians and researchers in the regenerative setting. Obesity represents one of the major comorbidities in patients affected by chronic ulcers and therefore diverse studies aimed at assessing possible links between these two morbid conditions are currently ongoing. In particular, adipose tissue has recently been described as having metabolic and endocrine functions rather than serving as a mere fat storage deposit. In this setting, adipose-derived stem cells, a peculiar subset of mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (MSCs) located in adi

Modification of mesenchymal stem cells for cartilage-targeted therapy.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic degenerative joint disease characterized by the destruction of the articular cartilage, sclerosis of the subchondral bone, and joint dysfunction. Its pathogenesis is attributed to direct damage and mechanical destruction of joint tissues. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), suggested as a potential strategy for the treatment of OA, have shown therapeutic effects on OA. However, the specific fate of MSCs after intraarticular injection, including cell attachment, proliferation, differentiation, and death, is still unclear, and there is no guarantee that stem cells can
