Microplastics May Be a Significant Cause of Male Infertility.

Due to the problematic degradation properties of plastics, the decomposition of plastic results in the formation of numerous microplastics (MPs), less than 5 mm in diameter. These MPs enter the soil and the ocean, eventually passing through the air, water, or food chain back to the human body and harming human health. In the last 80 years, male semen analysis parameters have shown a significant decline for unknown reasons, speculated to be caused by pollutants. No studies examined the relationship between human MP exposure and male infertility. In this article, we reviewed the relevant animal

Sulfide modifies physicochemical properties and mercury adsorption of microplastics.

Microplastics (MPs) tend to accumulate and undergo a sulfur weathering process that leads to significant surface changes in sulfur-rich anaerobic environments, such as sewage and wastewater treatment plants. Aged MPs can have a profound impact on environmental behaviors of various toxic pollutants, especially heavy metals. Although previous studies have investigated the adsorption characteristics of metal ions on MPs that are aged in aerobic environments, the sorptive interactions of sulfur-aged MPs in anaerobic environments with mercury, i.e., Hg(II), are largely unknown. In this study, labor

Microplastics influence on Hg methylation in diverse paddy soils.

Microplastics are widespread in estuarine, coastal, and deep sea sediments. The influence of microplastics on mercury (Hg) methylation in paddy soils with different characteristics, however, has not been well reported. In this research, we conducted a microcosmic experiment using red soil and alkaline soil with 2%, 7% and 10% polyvinyl chloride microplastics (PVC-MPs). Diffusive gradients in thin film (DGT) were used to test bioavailable Hg2+ and bioavailable methylmercury (MeHg) in soils. Results showed that PVC-MPs could decrease bioavailable MeHg concentrations both in red soil and alkaline

Stomach flushing technique applied to quantify microplastics in Crocodilians.

The impact of microplastics on wildlife is a recent problem for which methods to evaluate exposure still need development. Being able to identify and quantify microplastics (particles < 5 mm) in the gastric contents of live crocodiles allows us to evaluate exposure, at both individual and population level, and also its contribution as transporter of other contaminants. The method was validated to determine and quantify microplastics in crocodile stomach contents recovered during an experiment where a known amount of this contaminant was given to crocodiles via oral administration. Through stom

Biofilm facilitates metal accumulation onto microplastics in estuarine waters.

In aquatic environments, plastic debris accumulates chemical pollutants from the surrounding water, potentially altering the fate of xenobiotics in these ecosystems. The effects of biofouling on the potential for plastic to sorb environmental pollutants remain poorly understood. In this study, we test the hypothesis that concentrations of metals are directly related to biofilm accumulation on microplastics submerged in natural estuarine waters. Two types of pre-production plastic pellets (polylactic acid (PLA) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE)) and glass pellets, were suspended for up to 28

Microplastics in poultry: Sources, bioaccumulation and human health consequences.

The widespread use and environmental persistence of plastics have led to growing concerns about microplastic (MP) contamination across food systems including poultry production. This review summarizes current knowledge on the sources, pathways of transmission and impacts of MPs in poultry, highlighting their potential risks to animal and human health. Poultry are highly exposed to MPs through contaminated feed ingredients, drinking water, litter and the surrounding environment. Plastic residues from feed packaging, degraded farm equipment and atmospheric deposition contribute further to contam

Microplastics in neonates: an overlooked cost of parenteral nutrition.

INTRODUCTION: Microplastics (MPs) are emerging contaminants that raise concerns due to their potential health effects on vulnerable neonates who may be exposed to medical devices. METHODS: This prospective study investigated the presence of MPs in neonatal blood in relation to parenteral nutrition (PN) duration. A total of 12 neonates were categorized into long-term (>14 days), short-term (3-7 days), and non-exposed control groups. MPs were analyzed using confocal micro-Raman spectroscopy. RESULTS: Polyethylene accounted for 95.65% of particles detected in all blood samples. MP abundance was

Microplastics in intravenous fluids: Occurrence, characterization, and risk indicators.

In this study, the presence of microplastics was investigated in a total of 50 commercially available intravenous fluid samples in Türkiye, and ATR/FT-IR spectroscopy was used for particle identification. As a result of the analyses, microplastic contamination was detected in only 9 samples. Considering all samples examined, the average amount of microplastics was calculated as 0.40 ± 0.90 MP/L. Accordingly, microplastic exposure associated with the single-use administration of intravenous fluids (all samples) was determined to be approximately 0.20 MPs per unit. While the microplastic diversi

Microplastics, Gut Dysbiosis, and Inflammatory Pathways in Ulcerative Colitis.

Microplastics (MPs) are pervasive environmental pollutants characterized by their widespread distribution. They can enter the human body through multiple routes, including inhalation and dietary intake, accumulate in the gastrointestinal tract, and subsequently disrupt intestinal microecological homeostasis, thereby contributing to digestive diseases. Ulcerative colitis (UC), a chronic inflammatory bowel disease of unclear etiology, has been closely associated with gut microbiota dysbiosis, which is considered one of its central pathogenic mechanisms. This review comprehensively review the fun

Microplastics accumulate in human bile and drive cholangiocyte senescence.

Microplastics are ubiquitous environmental pollutants that increasingly infiltrate human organs and tissues through multiple exposure pathways. While acute toxicological impacts have been documented, the metabolic fate of these polymers within the enterohepatic circulation remains poorly understood. Bile serves as a critical excretory fluid, and disruptions in its balance can lead to biliary tract diseases such as gallstones. However, the long-term accumulation patterns and chronic toxic effects of microplastics within the human biliary system are largely unknown. Here we show the universal pr

Integrated toxicological approach to microplastics and nanoplastics in crustaceans.

Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) have emerged as pervasive contaminants in aquatic ecosystems, with global inputs to the oceans projected to rise from 11 million metric tons in 2016 to 44 million tons by 2060. Originating from single-use plastics, textiles, fishing gear, industrial waste, and other sources, these particles enter water bodies via urban runoff, wastewater effluents, and atmospheric deposition, ultimately accumulating in sediments. Crustaceans, due to their benthic foraging behavior, wide ecological distribution, and trophic relevance, are highly susceptible to MP/NP ex

Microplastics, nanoplastics and liver disease: an emerging health concern?

Human liver tissue has been found to contain microplastics and nanoplastics (MNPs), with evidence that hepatic MNP accumulation has markedly increased over the past 10 years, prompting critical questions regarding their potential causal role in liver disease. In cell-based and murine models, MNP exposure can trigger oxidative stress, fibrogenesis and inflammation, pathological features that resemble those of advanced liver disease, suggesting shared mechanistic pathways. Furthermore, the capacity for MNPs to act as vectors for microbial pathogens, antimicrobial resistance, endocrine-disrupting

Microplastics and female infertility: reproductive toxicity and underlying mechanisms.

In modern society, the progression of ovarian aging in women has accelerated, and the incidence of infertility has increased markedly with a distinct younger-onset trend. Exploring the etiology and pathogenesis of infertility has become a core research focus for clinicians. Plastic products bring tremendous convenience to modern life, while the health risks caused by plastic pollution have aroused global concern. As typical endocrine-disrupting chemicals, microplastics (MPs) can enter the human body through dietary intake, respiration, and skin contact, and accumulate in multiple organs. Accum

Exposure to microplastics during pregnancy and fetal liver function.

Emerging evidence suggests that in-utero exposure to microplastics (MPs) may have physiological consequences for fetal development, yet human data remain limited. This study investigates the association between placental microplastic exposure and umbilical liver enzyme levels as markers of fetal hepatic function. A prospective cohort study was conducted in Shenyang, China, including 1057 pregnant women. Placental microplastic quantification was performed using LD-IR chemical imaging, targeting polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polypropylene (PP), and polybutylene succinate (PBS). Umbilical cord blood

Influence of Microplastics on Manifestations of Experimental Chronic Colitis.

Environmental pollution with microplastics (MPs) can have a negative impact on human health. Certain findings point to the relationship between MP and the development of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). We investigated the effect of MP consumption on the severity of chronic colitis in male C57BL/6 mice. The MP effect was modeled by drinking water consumption with a suspension of 5 μm PS particles at a concentration of 10 mg/L replacement for 12 weeks. Chronic colitis was induced by three seven-day cycles of 1% DSS consumption (starting from the 8th, 29th and 50th days of the experiment). We

Microplastics identified in commercial over-the-counter lubricant eyedrops.

BACKGROUND: There is increasing evidence that microplastics exert harmful effects on human health and on the ocular surface. This pilot study aims to investigate if microplastic particles are present in commonly used eyedrops in single-use plastic vials. METHODS: Six commonly used commercial tear-replacement solutions available without a doctor's prescription were tested (Brands A-F). All brands of eyedrops were analysed visually using light microscopy and the number of microplastic particles were manually counted. These were further analysed using the Agilent 8700 Laser Direct Infrared (LDIR

Toxicological effects of microplastics and sulfadiazine on Artemia sinica.

Sulfadiazine (SDZ) is a widely used antibiotic that raises significant environmental concerns. Despite the role of microplastics (MPs) in facilitating the adsorption of environmental organic pollutants and influencing their toxicity to organisms, further research is necessary to understand the combined and individual effects of PS and SDZ on Artemia sinica. This study conducted experiments with varying concentrations of SDZ (0.16 mg/L, 0.8 mg/L, 4 mg/L, and 20 mg/L) both individual and combination treatments with 4 mg/L of PS to elucidate the potential toxic mechanisms. The results showed that

Microplastics: A threat to Fetoplacental unit and Reproductive systems.

Plastic pollution has become a pressing global environmental and public health challenge, raising significant concerns about its potential effects on human health. While extensive research has been conducted on micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs), there remains a critical gap in understanding how these plastic particles traverse the maternal-fetal interface and contribute to reproductive anomalies. This review aims to address this knowledge gap by examining the effects of MNPs on the fetoplacental unit, a vital structure that serves as the interface between the mother and fetus during pregnancy, as
