Injury to the spinal cord in motor vehicle traffic crashes.

Motor vehicle traffic crashes (MVTCs) are the leading cause of traumatic spinal cord injury. Evidence of putative risk factors for this type of injury comes largely from descriptive studies. This study is the first case-control study of risk factors for spinal cord injury specifically in car crashes. Cases of occupant spinal cord injury in South Australia were identified from the Australian Spinal Cord Injury Register (ASCIR) which provides full coverage of the adult population. The comparison group was other seriously injured car occupants. In single vehicle car crashes in the country, the li

Electrocardiographic findings in dogs with motor vehicle-related trauma.

Motor vehicle-related injury is the most common form of trauma incurred by dogs, and cardiac arrhythmias are a well-recognized complication. Although posttraumatic arrhythmias are often observed, little is known regarding their frequency. This study utilized continuous ambulatory electrocardiography (i.e., Holter monitoring) to describe the cardiac rhythm disturbances in 30 dogs sustaining trauma in motor vehicle accidents. Ventricular ectopy was identified by Holter monitoring in 29 of 30 dogs, although the initial electrocardiogram (EKG) only documented ventricular ectopic complexes (VECs) i

[Motor vehicle source contributions to air pollutants in Beijing].

Beijing's motor vehicle emission inventory based on GIS technology was developed, and used to estimate the contribution rate of different types of vehicles and different areas of vehicles to the total vehicular emissions in the urban area of Beijing. ISCST3, a gaussian dispersion air quality model, was modified at low wind speed condition, and then used to facilitate the study of the spatial and temporal distribution of CO and NOx concentrations in Beijing. It was shown that vehicle source emissions of CO and NOx accounted for 76.8% and 40.2%, respectively, of the total emissions in 1995. The

Death and injury from motor vehicle crashes in Colombia.

We report data on the distribution and determinants of road deaths and injuries for all victims in Colombia, with the aim of defining targets and priorities for highway death prevention in that country and other rapidly urbanizing nations. Using information from Colombia's Fund for the Prevention of Road Injury and the national death registry, we studied data on deaths and injuries from 1991 to 1995 for the nation as a whole and for the country's two largest cities, Santa Fe de Bogotá and Medellín. Deaths and injuries are rising in the nation as a whole. Of the deaths, 75% occur in urban areas

Who develops PTSD from motor vehicle accidents?

Within 1 to 4 months of their motor vehicle accident (MVA), we assessed 158 MVA victims who sought medical attention as a result of the MVA. Using the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale (CAPS: Blake, Weathers, Nagy, Kaloupek, Klauminzer, Charney & Keane, 1990. National Center for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Boston, MA)., we found that 62 (39%) met DSM-III-R (American Psychiatric Association, 1987. Washington, DC: American Psychiatric Press) criteria for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Using variables from the victim's account of the accident and its sequelae, pre-MVA psychosocial functionin

Facial trauma in motor vehicle accidents: etiological factors.

The effects of seat belts and the use of alcohol and drugs have been studied as etiological factors in facial trauma to occupants of motor vehicle accidents (MVAs). During a 15-month period, 461 patients were admitted to a regional trauma center as a result of injuries sustained in MVAs. Two hundred thirty-seven (51%) of these patients had facial trauma. Facial trauma was the single most common injury in these patients. One hundred eighty-five patients (78%) had major soft tissue injury, and 52 patients (22%) had facial bone fractures. Forty-two of 237 patients (18%) with facial trauma were we

Peripheral nerve entrapment caused by motor vehicle crashes.

During the era before seatbelts and air bags, extensive injury was common after motor vehicle collisions (MVCs). Yet upper extremity peripheral nerve problems, other than the brachial plexus injury, have not been ascribed previously to MVCs. Seven hundred twenty-five patients with the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), cubital tunnel syndrome (CT), and radial sensory nerve (RSN) entrapment in the forearm were reviewed. The number of MVC-caused nerve entrapments was 157 (68 for CTS, 64 for CT, and 25 for RSN). In 25% of the patients, the nerve entrapment was bilateral. This paper discus

Penetrating ocular injuries secondary to motor vehicle accidents.

BACKGROUND: Penetrating ocular trauma is second only to cataracts as the most common cause of visual impairment in the United States; motor vehicle accidents are an important cause of injuries (ocular and non-ocular). METHODS: The files of 293 consecutive patients treated for a penetrating ocular injury over a 5-year period (1986 to 1991) were reviewed, and 10 (3.4%) were associated with a motor vehicle accident. RESULTS: Median age was 27.5 years and median initial visual acuity was 20/200 (range, 20/30 to light perception). A sharp glass fragment penetrating the eye was the mechanism of in

Sleep deprivation, epilepsy and the ability to operate a motor vehicle.

This study is based upon 207 examinations for the evaluation of the ability to operate a motor vehicle in persons with transient disturbances of the cerebral function. In 26 persons, the EEG was repeated after sleep deprivation. There was EEG activation with transient disturbances in seven cases (not present in the routine EEG). In five individuals, there were transient disturbances in the routine EEG as well as after sleep deprivation. No abnormalities were recorded in 14 persons. No driver's license could be granted in five patients with unequivocal spike wave complexes or spike wave paroxys

Persistent shoulder pain following a motor vehicle accident.

A 29-year-old woman had intermittent left shoulder pain during a 4-month period following a motor vehicle accident. Sudden development of a pleuritic component was noted. An elevated left hemidiaphragm of the chest radiograph prompted an ultrasound examination of the abdomen, which revealed a 15-cm complex mass in the left upper quadrant. At surgery, a tumor mass attached to the splenic artery, stomach, and diaphragm was removed. Pathologic studies revealed an encapsulated adrenal hematoma. This case represents an unusual cause of persistent shoulder pain due to diaphragmatic irritation by an

Cervical spine fracture following a motor vehicle accident.

We present the case of a 50-year-old man who visited our emergency department 12 h after an alcohol-related motor vehicle accident complaining of shoulder pain and neck stiffness. Cervical spine radiographs were obtained and interpreted as normal, and the patient was discharged. Subsequent review by a radiologist raised the question of a second cervical vertebra (C-2) abnormality, and the patient was recalled. Cervical computed tomography (CT) scan revealed an unstable oblique fracture of C-2 and a congenital nonfusion of the arch of C-1. The patient was placed in halo traction, and subsequent

Impalement injuries to the thorax as a result of motor vehicle accidents.

We report three cases of thoracic impalement by large-diameter steel pipes as a result of motor vehicle accidents. The steel pipes were removed in all patients in the operating room under general anesthesia and controlled circumstances. Despite the dramatic nature and presentation of these injuries, all 3 patients had nonlethal injuries and have recuperated without sequelae. Orderly care with standard surgical procedures is required and will give good results.

Intestinal evisceration resulting from a motor vehicle accident.

Presented is the case of a motor vehicle accident (MVA) victim with hypotension and evisceration of small intestine. Vigorous resuscitation in the emergency department was required, after which a portion of small bowel was resected at laparotomy. Evisceration secondary to trauma in an MVA is a rare injury. Significant blood loss occurs. Although abdominal sepsis did not occur in our case, this is a complication for which the patient must be monitored closely.

Bike helmets prevent pediatric head injury in serious bicycle crashes with motor vehicles.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 75% of all bicycle-related mortality is secondary to head injuries, 85% of which could have been prevented by wearing a bicycle helmet. Younger children appear to be at greater risk than adults, yet helmet use is low despite this risk and legislation and ordinances requiring helmet use among younger riders. We sought to determine whether bicycle helmets are associated with the incidence and severity of head injury among pediatric bicyclists involved in a bicycle crash involving a motor vehicle. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of patients age ≤ 18 years h

Pedestrian Detection before Motor Vehicle Moving Off Maneuvers using Ultrasonic Sensors in the Vehicle Front.

Vehicles that start moving from a stationary position can cause fatal traffic accidents involving pedestrians. Ultrasonic sensors installed in the vehicle front are an active technology designed to alert drivers to the presence of stationary objects such as rigid walls in front of their vehicles. However, the ability of such sensors to detect humans has not yet been established. Therefore, this study aims to ascertain whether these sensor systems can successfully detect humans. First, we conducted experiments using four vehicles equipped with ultrasonic sensor systems for vehicle-forward movin
