Reactive soft tissue growth: a case report of onset post-extraction of natal tooth.

Natal teeth occur in approximately 1 in 2,000-3,000 live births and may cause oral soft tissue trauma such as Riga-Fede disease. This report describes a late-preterm female neonate with two mandibular incisor natal teeth, which were extracted. Following extraction, an erythematous gingival swelling developed at the site, which enlarged over five months into a firm, pink, pedunculated mass. Excision was performed under local anesthesia using a diode laser. Histopathology revealed a peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF)-a reactive inflammatory hyperplastic lesion that is exceedingly rare in infants

Pachyonychia congenita type 2, N92S mutation of keratin 17 gene: clinical features, mutation analysis and pathological view.

Pachyonychia congenita (PC) type 2 is a rare inherited genetic disease characterized by hypertrophic nail dystrophy, palmoplantar hyperkeratosis and multiple pilosebaceous cysts. In some cases, natal teeth and hair abnormalities may be present. It is caused by mutations in keratin 17 or its expression partner keratin 6b. Here, an N92S (p.Asn92Ser) germline keratin 17 gene mutation in a pachyonychia congenita type 2 female patient is presented. The pedigree includes the 15 members of a family who showed a severe expression of the phenotype for six generations with a similar clinical picture con

Pachyonychia Congenita Associated with a Novel Variant of KRT17 Presenting Unusual Oral Manifestations.

Pachyonychia congenita (PC) is a rare autosomal dominant condition caused by heterozygous mutation in one of five keratin genes. The purpose of this paper is to report a five-day-old infant with PC whose initial presentation revealed multiple malformed natal teeth and gingival lesions on the alveolar crest. Further investiga- tions led to genetic molecular testing of the child and his parents, which revealed a de novo and novel missense variant of KRT17 (c. 307C>T, p. Arg103Cys), resulting in a non-conservative amino-acid substitution and a diagnosis of PC. This case high- lights the need for

Incidental Exfoliation of a Natal Tooth During Impression Making for Nasoalveolar Molding in an Infant With Cleft Lip and Palate.

Nasoalveolar molding (NAM) is a standard presurgical intervention to improve feeding and nasolabial symmetry in infants with cleft lip and palate. Natal teeth are rare in this population and may complicate orthopedic care. This report describes the incidental exfoliation of a natal tooth during secondary impression making for NAM in a 2-week-old infant with unilateral cleft lip and palate. The case emphasizes the importance of careful neonatal oral examination to reduce the risk of bleeding, aspiration, and procedural complications.

Natal tooth associated with fibrous hyperplasia - a rare case report.

Eruption of tooth at about 6 months of age is a significant stage in child's life and is an emotional event for parents. However, a tooth present in the oral cavity of newborn can lead to a lot of delusions. Natal and neonatal teeth are of utmost importance not only for a dentist but also for a paediatrician due to parent's anxiety, folklore superstitions and numerous associated complications with it. This paper reports a rare case, wherein a natal tooth has led to the development of a reactive fibrous hyperplasia in an 8-week-old infant.

Ellis-van Creveld syndrome: a case report.

Ellis-van Creveld syndrome (EvC) is a disease complex, where all the three embryonic layers appear to be involved. This disorder is also called as Chondroectodermal dysplasia. EvC is an autosomal recessive disorder resulting from mutations in these patients. Mutations in the two genes EVC and EVC2, have been identified to cause the condition. It has been considered as a skeletal dysplasia with an incidence of approximately 1 out of 1,50,000 live births. A high prevalence has been reported among certain populations like Amish and Arabs of Gaza strip. There are more than 300 cases of EvC reporte

Pachyonychia congenita with late onset (PC tarda).

Pachyonychia congenita is a rare type of ectodermal dysplasia further classified into 4 types. Cutaneous manifestations seen in most of the cases of Pachyonychia congenita include palmoplantar keratoderma, follicular hyperkeratosis, wedge shaped nails, oral leukokeratosis and woolly hair. A 25-year-old male presented to us with thickened nails and scanty scalp hair. On examination, we noticed hyperkeratotic plaques over both the soles, palmoplantar hyperhidrosis and yellowish discoloration, wedging with subungual hyperkeratosis of all the nails. Follicular hyperkeratotic papules and steatocyst

Dysgnathia complex sine holoprosencephaly nor synotia: a case report and discussion of its nosology.

A severe mandibular hypoplasia and microstomy with intraoral anomalies including hypoglossia, fused gums, persistence of buccopharyngeal membrane, and laryngeal hypoplasia were noted in a female newborn with the dysgnathia complex (DC). Additionally, our proposita also presented natal teeth as a probably new finding. These clinical manifestations overlapped with those of the fourth report of hypomandibular faciocranial syndrome (HFS) (31), and given that both lack for craniosynostosis (pathognomonic of HFS), we considered that both represent a subtype of DC proposed as DC sine holoprosencephal

Genodermatoses with teeth abnormalities.

Many genodermatoses exhibit abnormal teeth findings. Studies examining these entities are scarce and narrow in their scope. This paper reviews the evolution, development, and structure of the tooth and provides a summary of genodermatoses with aberrant dental findings. The latter are classified according to the abnormal dental findings: periodontal disease, anodontia/oligodontia/hypodontia, polydontia, enamel hypoplasia, natal teeth, dental pits, and others. Finally, we provide an algorithm that dermatologists and dentists can follow to better recognize genodermatoses with dental involvement.

Congenital PCB poisoning: a reevaluation.

A review of the literature reveals a need to clarify the pathologic physiology of congenital polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) poisoning, which is characterized by intrauterine growth retardation, brown staining of the skin and mucous membranes, as in Addison's disease, natal teeth, widely open fontanelles and sagittal suture and apparent overgrowth of the gingiva. The skull abnormalities may represent irregular calcification, with natal teeth appearing because the bone of the mandible is penetrated more easily than usual. Some fetuses were poisoned at the time the mothers ingested the oil; other

Methemoglobinemia in a newborn: a case report.

The purpose of this report was to describe a case of methemoglobinemia involving different systemic complications as a result of local anesthetic injection with lidocaine in a 2-day-old female patient. Acquired methemoglobinemia is considered a major, potentially life-threatening complication. There are several reports of this complication related to anesthetic agents, most commonly prilocaine and benzocaine. It can involve patients of different ages, but it is more common in children 6-years-old and younger, particularly those younger than 3 months. Widely used in dental practices for pain ma

A Case of Beare-Stevenson Syndrome with Unusual Manifestations.

BACKGROUND: Beare-Stevenson syndrome (BSS) is an extremely rare genetic disorder, with fewer than 25 cases reported worldwide. This autosomal dominant syndrome has been linked to two mutations in the fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 gene (FGFR2), Tyr375Cys and Ser372Cys, both causing amino acid changes. CASE REPORT: BSS is characterized by a range of morphological features, some more classically associated than others, of which craniosynostosis has been almost uniformly present. Other common features include cutis gyrata, acanthosis nigricans, ear and eye defects, skin/mucosal tissue tags,

Molecular epidemiology of pachyonychia congenita in the Israeli population.

BACKGROUND: Pachyonychia congenita (PC) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder featuring palmoplantar keratoderma, nail dystrophy, oral leucokeratosis, pilosebaceous cysts and natal teeth. PC results from dominant mutations in one of five genes (KRT6A, KRT6B, KRT6C, KRT16, KRT17) encoding keratin proteins. AIM: To delineate the clinical and genetic features of PC in a series of Israeli patients. METHODS: We used direct sequencing of genomic DNA, and also used cDNA sequencing where applicable. RESULTS: We collected clinical information and molecular data in a cohort of Israeli families diagno

[Inclusion cysts. Case report].

Inclusion cysts which are developmental anomalies can be seen either along the midpalatine raphe or on the dental ridges as well as on other areas of the palate in newborns. Based on their localisation and histology these are classified into three types (Epstein's pearls, Bohn's nodules, Dental lamina cysts). These are often taken as natal or neonatal teeth. No treatment is indicated since the lesions will spontaneously disappear few weeks after birth.
