BACKGROUND: Concepts of affective disorders have not received substantial validation in childhood and adolescence even after the theoretical separation between neurotic and endogenous depression was changed. The aim of this study was to assess differences in children and adolescents with neurotic and endogenous depression according to ICD-9 and depression according to ICD-10 with regard to the severity of different symptoms as well as anamnestic and psychosocial risk factors.
SAMPLING AND METHODS: Data of 33 and 88 patients (classified according to ICD-9 and ICD-10, respectively) with a confi

One hundred seventeen patients, aged 16-75 years, with orofacial pains were studied. Borderline psychic disorders were detected in 106 cases, schizophrenia--in 11 cases. Facial pain was characterized by (1) polymorphism of sensations changing their site and duration, (2) absence of orofacial sensory deficits, (3) symptoms "mosaic"--a combination of separate signs specific for various "organic" facial pain, (4) absence of objective changes in oral cavity and facial region, (5) key role of psychoemotional factors in pain recurrence and intensification, (6) non-opioid analgesics and carbamazepine

The prevalence and clinical presentation of schizophrenia and schizophrenia spectrum disorders in general hospitals were studied. The disease incidence rate was estimated at 3.1% that was 3 times higher than that in general population. Slow-progredient (latent) schizophrenia with comorbid functional visceral disorders ("organoneurotic" schizophrenia) occurs most frequently. Once manifested, the latter was associated with somatoform disorders during the disease course and developed concomitantly with neurotic and overvalued hypochondria symptoms. The authors suggest that several variants of com

Using a clinical and psychopathological technique of examination the authors have investigated the mental condition of 232 patients with new cases of tuberculosis. Neurotic disturbances have been diagnosed in 64.7% of the patients, with asthenic and depressive syndromes constituting 84.7% of all mental disorders. Premorbid personality peculiarities are significantly correlated (p less than 0.001) with the incidence and nature of mental disorders, being most frequent in individuals with asthenic and psychoasthenic features. Specific antituberculosis therapy fails to control neurotic disturbance

Sixty inpatients, aged 7 to 15 years, with obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD) have been examined. The inclusion criteria comprised diagnostic ICD-10 criteria for OCD (F42), schizophrenia childhood type (F20.83) and neurotic-like schizophrenia (F21.3). Patients with organic CNS disorder signs and marked somatic pathology were excluded from the study. According to clinical features of the disease and its course (disease progressiveness), three OCD types have been determined: OCD in the structure of affective and neurotic-like spectra disorders (type 1); OCD in the structure of paranoid spectru

Two hundred and seventy-two mainly nonpsychotic psychiatric outpatients between 19 and 59 years of age were divided into various clinical groups according to DSM-III: pure major depression, major depression in combination with various anxiety disorders, pure anxiety disorders and a group with other mental disorders. The groups were compared as to differences in personality traits assessed by means of the Basic Character Inventory. The mixed major depression/non-panic anxiety disorder group appeared to be the most deviant with more oral-neurotic personality traits in addition to obsessive trait

This study examines the stability of ICD-10 diagnoses of patients admitted to Al Ain (United Arab Emirates) inpatients psychiatric unit during the period from November 1993 to August 1995. Diagnostic stability is a measure of the degree to which diagnoses remained unchanged at a later hospital admission. One hundred and seven patients were admitted more than once during this period, accounting for 168 readmissions. High levels of diagnostic stability were found for ICD-10 Fl-psychiatric disorders (100%), F2-schizophrenia (87%), F3-bipolar disorders (87%) and F3-depressive disorders (73%). A po

Panic disorders (PD) which develop in the context of different psychiatric diseases (neurotic, personality disorder and schizotypal disorders) have their own clinical and neurophysiological features. The results of compressive-spectral analysis of EEG (CSA EEG) in patients with panic attack were different depending on the specifics of initial psychiatric status. EEG parameters in patients differed from those in controls. The common feature for all PD patients was the lower spectral density of theta-, alpha- and beta-bands as well as total spectral density without any alterations of region dist

Long lasting, low intensity depressive episodes have been diversely integrated according to the classifications types or the psychodynamic points of view. The concept of anxious persistent lasting depression, neurotic depressive states, neurotic depression ... have been unified into the dysthymic disorder category of the DSM classification. This concept unification have been a topic of dispute considering that dysthymic disorder was a restrictive, heterogeneous an extensively comorbid diagnosis. Nevertheless the definition of this category offers the opportunity to place the notions of tempera

Personal values are considered as guiding principles for humans' attitudes and behavior, what makes them an essential component of mental health. Although these notions are widely recognized, investigations in clinical samples examining the link between values and mental health are lacking. We assessed n = 209 patients with affective disorders, neurotic disorders, reaction to severe stress, and adjustment disorders and personality disorders and compared them to a stratified random sample (n = 209) drawn from the European Social Survey. Personal values were assessed using the Portraits Value Qu

There is little rigorous evidence that shiftwork produces specific psychiatric disturbances. Substantial evidence suggests that shiftworkers are prone to increased drug and alcohol consumption, but the frequency with which this leads to actual drug abuse disorders has never been adequately defined. A preponderance of studies suggests that symptoms of a "neurotic" character are overrepresented among nightshift workers. The nature of these symptoms needs to be clarified with modern psychiatric nomenclature. It seems likely, based on certain experimental work, that nightshift work may at times ex

One hundred patients with "mild" depressive states, variously referred to as "situational," "reactive," or "neurotic," were studied. During a three- to four-year prospective follow-up, 4% had developed bipolar I, 14% bipolar II, and 22% unipolar disorders with predominantly favorable social outcome. Most of the remainder were suffering from nonaffective disorders; in this group, intermittent depressive symptomatology followed a protacted course (paralleling the underlying disorder) with generally unfavorable outcome. Irrespective of diagnostic subtype, a "characterological" component occurring

The mean free-thyroxine index value of a group of 25 psychotic depressive patients was found to be significantly lower than that of an age- and sex-matched group of 20 neurotic depressives (P less than 0.01). These findings support the view that psychotic and neurotic depression are differentiated not only with respect to their clinical expression, but also on account of their biological substrate. Comparison of free-thyroxine index values of each group of patients with a group of 240 euthyroid subjects hospitalized for various somatic illnesses revealed a lower mean free-thyroxine index value
