Hindsight informs foresight: revisiting millennial forecasts of impacts and status of rocky shores in 2025.

Rocky shorelines are characterised by vulnerability to both land- and sea-derived impacts. They face acute impacts such as pollution from shipping accidents, chronic pollution from point sources, run-off and catchments plus disturbances by food gathering, recreation and sediment deposition in sheltered areas. Coastal urbanisation can both impact natural shores and create impoverished artificial rocky shores. Superimposed upon local and regional scale impacts are global environmental changes including warming, sea-level rise, increasing storm frequency, ocean acidification and non-native invasi

Characterization of stormwater runoff in the powai region of Mumbai.

Urban stormwater runoff could be a significant non-point source of surface water pollution during India's monsoon season (June - September). This study aims to characterize the stormwater runoff in the Powai region of Mumbai and investigate interlinkages between precipitation characteristics and runoff quality. The levels of conventional water quality parameters (physical, chemical, microbiological) and emerging contaminants in the runoff were determined. Runoff samples were collected from various outfall locations (SL1, SL2, SL3, SL4 and SL5) which drain into the Powai Lake. Runoff sampling w

The role of agricultural drainage, storm-events, and natural filtration on the biogeochemical cycling capacity of aquatic and sediment environments in Lake Erie's drainage basin.

Lake Erie is the most at risk of the Great Lakes for degraded water quality due to non-point source pollution caused by agricultural activities in the lake's watershed. The extent and temporal patterns of nutrient loading from these agricultural activities is influenced by the timing of agronomic events, precipitation events, and water flow through areas of natural filtration within the watershed. Downstream impacts of these nutrient loading events may be moderated by the co-loading of functionally relevant biogeochemical cycling microbial communities from agricultural soils. This study quanti

Following the smell: terpene emission profiles through the cannabis life-cycle.

Cannabis cultivation and processing are emerging sources of air pollutants, particularly malodorous volatile organic compounds (VOCs), yet uncertainties remain regarding their emission rates and chemical composition. Emission rates are typically the starting point for an air quality assessment; not addressing their uncertainty and chemical profile may lead to under/over estimation of impacts. This study aims to quantify terpene emissions from indoor cannabis operations in the Lower Fraser Valley, BC, Canada a region already affected by odorous sources and peak ozone concentrations in the summe

Assessing the effect of urbanization on regional-scale surface water-groundwater interaction and nitrate transport.

Identifying regional-scale surface water-groundwater interactions (SGI) is vital for predicting anthropogenic effects on surface water bodies and underlying aquifers. However, large-scale water and nutrient flux studies rely on surface water or groundwater-focused models. This study aims to model the effect of urbanization, which is usually accompanied by high groundwater abstraction and surface water pollution, particularly in the developing world, on a regional-scale SGI and nitrate loading. In the study area, the urban expansion increased by over 3% in the last decade. The integrated SWAT-M

Protein Engineering of a Genetically Encodable Biosensor for Wastewater Detection of Profen NSAIDs.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are pervasive environmental contaminants due to their frequent and widespread use, multiple paths of release into surface and ground water supply, diversity of the chemical class, and toxicity to aquatic and other non-target species. In particular, the 2-arylpropionic acid ("profen") class of NSAIDs poses significant risks to aquatic ecosystems due to incomplete removal during wastewater treatment. Current monitoring precludes high-frequency testing at point sources. Here, we present the engineering and application of a genetically encodable, prot

The Modern Environment and Childhood Asthma: The Role of Air Pollution and Heavy Metal Exposure.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Childhood asthma is the most common chronic non-communicable disease in children and a major global public health challenge. Although genetic predisposition contributes to asthma susceptibility, the high burden of disease-particularly in high-sociodemographic-index regions-points to a central role of environmental exposures characteristic of the modern environment. This review synthesizes current evidence linking ambient air pollution and heavy metal exposure to childhood asthma, with a focus on early-life vulnerability, underlying biological mechanisms, and implications for

Pesticide and Transformation Product Occurrence and Ecological Risks in Irrigation Water of an Intensive Floriculture Region in Ecuador: Targeted and Non-Target Suspect Screening Analyses (2022-2025).

BACKGROUND: Irrigation water can transport pesticides into aquatic environments, threatening ecosystem and human health. Despite these risks, irrigation water quality remains poorly studied and non-regulated in Latin America, and in floricultural regions, revealing a critical monitoring and research gap. METHODS: Between 2022 and 2025, irrigation water, post-harvest facility (PHF) water, river water, and groundwater samples were collected throughout Pedro Moncayo, Ecuador, a pesticide intensive floricultural region. Samples were taken along two irrigation channels from their source in Cayambe

An assessment of contaminants and benthic condition in the Matagorda Bay system (Texas, USA).

The Matagorda Bay system has suffered a long-term decline in benthic abundance, biomass, and diversity since the 1980's. This study examined sediment contamination to determine if legacy pollutants are degrading sediment quality and are a possible cause for ecosystem degradation. Degradation can be indicated by a decline in benthic integrity (i.e., diversity), decreased survival rates of organisms exposed to sediment, and sediment chemical contaminant concentrations over threshold limits. These methods form the Sediment Quality Triad to assess environmental effects. There were no contaminant c

Characteristics of antibiotic resistance gene distribution in rainfall runoff and combined sewer overflow.

Rainfall runoff and combined sewer overflow (CSO) converge with organic waste, nutrients, and microbes from the ground and wastewater. These pollutants promote the spread and transformation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). In this study, four rainfall runoff and one CSO outfall were chosen, and samples were collected to explore the occurrence and distribution of ARGs. The ARGs were extracted from suspended solids and analyzed using metagenomic sequencing. A total of 888 ARG subtypes, belonging to 17 ARG types, were detected in all samples. Eleven ARG types were shared by all the samples.

Emission characteristics and ozone formation potentials of VOCs from ultra-low-emission waterborne automotive painting.

Automotive painting plants are important emission sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that contribute significantly to ground-level ozone (O₃) pollution in atmosphere. Here, we investigated process-specified emission characteristics of VOCs, without or with advanced adsorption/incineration after-treatments, from an ultra-low-emission (ULE) waterborne painting process in a modernized automotive plant. Overall, more than 80 VOCs species were identified and sorted into seven main categories. In the stack emissions without after-treatments, oxygenated VOCs (alcohols, esters, ketones, ethe

Mortality and long-term exposure to source-specific PM2·5: evidence from a national cohort study in China.

BACKGROUND: The hazardous effects of fine particulate matter (PM2·5) could vary by source. However, evidence regarding the long-term effects of source-specific PM2·5 on mortality is scarce, particularly in countries with high levels of pollution. We aimed to assess the associations between long-term exposure to source-specific PM2·5 and mortality in China, a low-income and middle-income country with high concentrations of PM2·5. METHODS: This nationwide cohort study used data from the 2010-11 wave of the China Chronic Disease and Risk Factor Surveillance (CCDRFS) project, which surveyed a geo

The pesticide fate tool for groundwater vulnerability assessment within the geospatial decision support system LandSupport.

The protection of groundwater resources from non-point-source pollutants, such as those coming from agricultural practices, is the focus of several European Directives, including the Water Framework Directive and the Pesticide Directive. Besides the environmental goals to be reached by the single EU member state, these directives clearly underline the role of experts in supporting planners and public authorities to fulfil these objectives. This work presents a new web-based, freely-available dynamical tool, named the pesticide fate tool, developed within the geospatial Decision Support system

Levels of trace elements in PM10 collected at roadsides of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and exposure risk assessment.

Estimation of personal exposure to air pollution is needed to identify high-risk population and to develop mitigation strategies. In this study, an assessment of the potential effects of short-term exposure to PM10 and the elements bound within PM10 was conducted. Samples were obtained from the ten sub-cities of Addis Ababa (three sampling points from each) during the commuting time (traffic congestion and taxi queues). A particle counter consisting of a portable sampling unit with multi-fraction dust samplers was used for sample collection. The elemental composition was analyzed by inductivel
