Background. The prevalence of low vision and blindness in persons across the lifespan means that occupational therapists will encounter these conditions across all areas of practice. Practitioners must be equipped with competencies necessary to recognize and respond to vision loss-related concerns. Purpose. This study sought to identify essential occupational therapy competencies when providing services to people with low vision and blindness. Method. The study employed a three-phase modified Delphi methodology administered through online surveys and focus group. Respondents included people wi

IMPORTANCE: Occupational therapy practitioners address the occupational performance and participation needs of people with Parkinson's disease (PD) and their care partners.
OBJECTIVE: This Practice Guideline is informed by systematic reviews on the use of occupational therapy interventions to promote participation in occupations for people with PD and to facilitate their caregivers' participation in the caregiver role. This guideline is meant to support practitioners' clinical decision making when working with people with PD and their care partners.
METHOD: We examined and synthesized the re

BACKGROUND: Pre-discharge home assessments are integral to discharge planning; however, there is no screening tool identifying clients with complex needs.
PURPOSE: To determine the inter- and intrarater reliability and predictive and concurrent validity of the Occupational Therapy Discharge Needs Screen (OTDNS), a screening tool that identifies clients with more complex discharge needs.
METHODS: The OTDNS Functional Independence Measure (FIM) and Functional Autonomy Measurement System (SMAF) were administered to 89 participants.
FINDINGS: Intrarater reliability was ICC = 0.93 (95% CI 0.90 -

The profession of occupational therapy is said to have underpinnings of holistic, humanistic, and client-centered values. How does this claim translate into practice? This article reports on a qualitative study in which the practice experiences of 12 occupational therapists in the United Kingdom were explored. Through phenomenological analysis of interviews and participant observation data, the findings revealed that although holism is indeed valued, considerable uncertainty exists about what it actually means. The therapists studied seemed to understand holism and enact it in different, somet

Educational experiences and didactic materials on health promotion are necessary for occupational therapists to remain current in the profession. This paper reviews health promotion learning experiences to determine the "state of the art" in this important area. It was found that few papers or workshops have been given at recent AOTA Annual Conferences; five universities received Allied Health Grants, which included occupational therapists, to develop health promotion learning materials; and occupational therapy educational curricula for the most part do include something on health promotion.

Chelating agents are useful in the therapy of acute overexposure to lead. However, prophylactic use of chelating agents, particularly under conditions of continued exposure to lead can be harmful to health. Potential adverse effects include kidney damage, symptomatic lead poisoning, increased absorption of lead from the gastrointestinal tract and disruption in the metabolism of trace metals other than lead. Prophylactic chelation is an unacceptable medical practice which cannot be condoned.

AIMS: Postoperative mobilization in neonates is a critical component of the enhanced recovery pathway. We aimed to explore physical therapy (PT) and occupational therapy (OT) utilization in neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) patients and hypothesized that neonates with major abdominal surgery will experience increased barriers to receiving therapies compared to nonoperative neonates.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed neonates admitted to our institution from January 2020 to December 2021. We compared therapy type/timing and clinical outcomes between operative and nonoperative neonates.

This study was designed to investigate the global utilization of occupational therapy (OT) services by patients with hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTRv) in Spain. The main objective was to find out whether these patients have access to OT services and the types of interventions being offered to them, together with their satisfaction and real benefits as users. We developed an online questionnaire which was distributed to patients with ATTRv in Spain through patient associations. Seventy-four patients with a diagnosis of ATTRv residing in Spain participated in the study. Thirteen had a

IMPORTANCE: Occupational therapy practitioners play an important role in addressing the occupational performance and participation needs of adults with multiple sclerosis (MS) and their caregivers.
OBJECTIVE: This Practice Guideline aims to help occupational therapy practitioners, as well as the people who manage, reimburse, or set policy regarding occupational therapy services, understand occupational therapy's role in providing services to adults with MS and their caregivers. This guideline can also serve as a reference for health care professionals, health care managers, educators, regulat

BACKGROUND.: Open-access booking (OAB) describes administrative changes to improve system efficiency. However, OAB studies have focused on GP practices and have not applied OAB to other health care services.
PURPOSE.: The purpose of the study was to investigate the associations between OAB and administrative outcomes in the Saint John region.
METHOD.: Evaluators compared three years of pre-OAB data against two years of post-OAB data using an interrupted-time series design (February 2014-January 2019).
FINDINGS.: OAB was associated with a 12% jump in the likelihood of being discharged within

BACKGROUND.: Research about occupational therapy practice in the community with people who have been imprisoned remains limited and may be considered an emerging area of practice.
PURPOSE.: This paper provides a critical, first-person account about emerging occupational therapy practice with men transitioning to the community post-imprisonment. The practice context is described and reflected on from the lens of a new graduate.
METHODS.: Autoethnography draws meaning from reciprocal interactions between an individual and a culture. Data was collected by the primary author through reflective j

Occupational therapy offers support through actuation via a suggested activity. It opens up a differentiated space, a space of experiences where patients can contemplate themselves through play. The therapeutic relationship, assured by the occupational therapist, offers flexibility and malleability to welcome, contain and support the person with an eating disorder. It aims to be compassionate without judgement to favour the experience of movement. 'Making do with oneself' to 'be with oneself' while respecting the temporality of the patient's possibilities.

Evidence Connection articles provide a clinical application of systematic reviews developed in conjunction with the American Occupational Therapy Association's (AOTA's) Evidence-Based Practice Project. In this Evidence Connection article, we describe a case report of an adolescent with autism spectrum disorder. The occupational therapy assessment and treatment processes for school, home, community, and transition settings are described. Findings from the systematic reviews on this topic were published in the September/October 2015 issue of the American Journal of Occupational Therapy and in AO

This case report describes occupational therapy (OT) intervention in an outpatient setting and outcomes for a child diagnosed with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) from 4 to 28 months of age. There is little information on therapy intervention and outcomes of children who have survived. The patient is a white male, born at 35 weeks gestation with a diagnosis of left CDH that required a patch repair. He also had a Nissen fundoplication, gastrostomy tube and spent the first 100 days of his life in the hospital. He received outpatient OT for 2 years. The process of service provision is descr
