BACKGROUND: Various stemness markers (SOX2, OCT4, and NANOG) have been studied in odontogenic cysts and tumors. However, studies on SALL4 having similar properties of stemness has not been documented. Additionally, insight into fascin as a migratory molecule is less explored. In this study, the expression of SALL4 and fascin were evaluated in ameloblastoma, adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT), odontogenic keratocyst (OKC), dentigerous cyst (DC), radicular cyst (RC), and calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC).
METHODS: Semi-quantitative analysis of fascin and SALL4 immuno-positive cells was done in

Myotonic dystrophy, also referred myotonic muscular dystrophy, is an autosomal dominant, slowly progressive, multisystem disease characterized by skeletal muscle weakness, wasting, and myotonia. A hybrid tumor of odontogenic apparatus is a lesion showing combined histopathological characteristics of two or more previously recognized odontogenic tumors and/or cysts of different categories. We, therefore, report a case of hybrid tumor (adenomatoid odontogenic tumor associated with calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor) in a myotonic dystrophic patient.

BACKGROUND: Induction of podoplanin by transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) has been shown in a number of lesions but not in odontogenic tumors (OTs). We evaluated the association between these markers in OTs for the first time and compared their expression among the different neoplasms.
METHODS: Immunohistochemistry using monoclonal antibody against podoplanin and TGF-β was performed on 76 odontogenic cysts and tumors. Spearman's correlation coefficient, Kruskal-Wallis, and Mann-Whitney U tests followed by adjustment with Bonferroni were used for statistical analysis (P < .05).
RESULTS: A s

Adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT) is a rare tumor of epithelial origin comprising 3% of all the odontogenic tumors. It is a benign, painless, noninvasive, and slow-growing lesion, with a relative frequency of 2.2-13% and often misdiagnosed as an odontogenic cyst on clinical examination. AOT affects young individuals with a female predominance, occurs mainly in the second decade, and usually surrounds the crown of unerupted teeth. This lesion is most commonly located in the anterior maxilla and rarely in the mandible. It is usually associated with an impacted canine. AOT frequently resembles

BACKGROUND: POT is a relatively newly described benign odontogenic tumor with very few cases registered to date. We present the 1st case of Primordial odontogenic tumor (POT) from Sub-Saharan Africa with unique clinicopathological features; also, this is the first case to report POT's existence as a Hybrid Odontogenic lesion (HOL), with a pertinent review of the literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: This was a 17-year-old patient who presented with slow-growing, painless posterior mandibular swelling. The imaging revealed a well-defined, unilocular, expansile, lytic lesion with internal calcific foc

Only 12 odontogenic ghost cell carcinomas (OGCC) have been reported in the English language literature to date. This article reports four additional cases of this rare odontogenic tumour and examines them in relation to those previously described. Judging from the number of published cases, the OGCC is more prevalent in Asians than other racial groups, occurs more often in the maxilla than the mandible, and is slightly more common in males than females. Histologically, elements of a benign calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) can be identified in all the malignant variants, either separated or ad

Calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor (CCOT) is a rare lesion accounting for only 2% of all odontogenic cysts and tumors. CCOTs can occur alone or in association with other odontogenic tumors such as odontomas. Pigmented intraosseous odontogenic lesions are rare. Among them, pigmented CCOT is known to occur with greater frequency. Only six cases of combination of pigmentation CCOT associated with odontoma have been reported in the literature. We herein present such a rare case occurring in the maxillary anterior region in a 13-year-old female patient.

Adenomatoid odontogenic tumor is a rare benign and odontogenic tumor that is frequently misdiagnosed as other odontogenic cysts and tumors on radiographic examination. To acquire additional information of adenomatoid odontogenic tumor, we performed magnetic resonance imagings (MRI) at a case of adenomatoid odontogenic tumor. The lesion was divided between the peripheral portion with a thick circular shape and the central portion with a round shape on the basis of the signal intensity (SI) of MRI. The peripheral portion showed intermediate SI contained multifocal no SI on T1WI, high SI containe

Odontogenic cysts are common lesions with different biological behavior. Odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) and calcifying odontogenic cysts (COCs) with ameloblastoma-like epithelium are more aggressive than dentigerous cysts (DCs) and radicular cysts (RCs). Therefore, they were included in the list of odontogenic tumors by WHO. Osteopontin (OPN) is a calcium-binding glycoprotein present in many normal tissues. It plays a role in the migration and invasion of transformed epithelial cells. Binding of OPN to its receptor CD44v6 can enhance cell motility and migration. The purpose of this study was t

PURPOSE: Oral and maxillofacial surgeons devote a large portion of their practice to the removal of impacted teeth. Many of these teeth have associated soft tissue that is submitted along with or without the tooth for histopathologic examination. This study reports the histopathologic diagnoses of a large series of pericoronal lesions in adults submitted to an oral and maxillofacial pathology biopsy service.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two thousand six hundred forty-six pericoronal lesions received during a 6-year period were reviewed for location, age, and histopathologic diagnosis.
RESULTS: Ret

INTRODUCTION: Mandibular anterior region is an uncommon site for occurrence of intrabony pathologies. Unilocular presentation of a lesion is again less common than multilocular appearance. Demographically, most lesions occur in middle to elderly age group. The study is designed to review the pathologies manifesting a combination of these rare demographic and radiological criteria.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of patients with anterior unilocular radiolucencies of mandible in young patients was done. Records of past 10 years were searched. There were a total of 17 patients.

AIM: This is to report a rare case of ameloblastic fibrodentinoma (AFD), including detailed history, histopathologic as well as radiographic findings. Her condition, a mixed odontogenic tumor, has rarely been reported in publications. We also included the gist of theories put forward regarding the histogenesis of this lesion.
BACKGROUND: AFD is a rare and controversial entity; it boasts a variety of classifications and terminology based on its unique biological nature as well as histopathological features.
CASE DESCRIPTION: The patient was a 13-year-old girl with a chief complaint of central

BACKGROUND: Secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (SPARC) has been shown to modulate aggressive behavior in several benign and malignant tumors. Little is known about SPARC expression in odontogenic keratocyst (OKC), an odontogenic cyst with an aggressive nature. To the best of our knowledge, only one study has been investigated the expression of this protein in OKCs. This study aimed to characterize SPARC expression in OKCs. Additionally, to determine whether SPARC is associated with aggressive behavior in OKCs, SPARC expression in OKCs was compared with radicular cysts (RCs), dentiger

Background: The odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) is an odontogenic cyst that shows aggressive and intriguing biological behavior. It is suggested that a hypoxic environment occurs in OKC, which led us to investigate the immunoexpression and location of hypoxia-inducible factor 1-alpha (HIF-1α) and other hypoxia-related proteins. Methods: Twenty cases of OKC were evaluated for the expression of Notch homolog 1 (NOTCH1), HIF-1α, disintegrin and metalloproteinase domain-containing protein 12 (ADAM-12), and heparin-binding epidermal growth factor-like growth factor (HBEGF) by immunohistochemistry and

Calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor (CCOT) is a rare histologic subtype of odontogenic tumor. Treatment requires complete enucleation. We report what we believe is the first case of CCOT to be removed via a transnasal endoscopic approach. A 16-year-old boy was referred to our department by his dentist for evaluation of an expansile mass of the left maxillary sinus. The dentist had noted an area of hyperlucency of the left palate during a routine examination. Computed tomography confirmed the presence of a large tumor. Complete resection of the tumor was achieved via a transnasal endoscopic sur

A calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor (CCOT) is an uncommon odontogenic tumor with a predilection for the anterior part of the jaws. We report on 2 cases of CCOT in the posterior maxilla involving the maxillary sinus. In the first case, conventional radiography found a well-defined unilocular lesion. Internal calcification was identified on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. Radiographically, the second case showed 2 large locules with a large complex odontoma and an embedded third molar. By revealing the internal calcification of the lesion, CBCT was helpful in the differential diag
