INTRODUCTION: Tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) is an acid phosphatase metalloprotein enzyme expressed in osteoclasts and is related to bone resorption. The molecular mechanisms involved in the different behavior of odontogenic keratocysts have not yet been fully elucidated. The purpose of this study was to compare TRAP expression in odontogenic keratocysts, radicular cysts, and dentigerous cysts.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we selected 60 samples, including 20 cases of each one of the odontogenic keratocysts (OKC), radicular cysts (RC) and dentigerous cysts

BACKGROUND: Orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst (OOC) is a rare developmental odontogenic cyst of the jaw. It was originally believed to be a variant of odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) but is now considered to be a distinct entity. OOC usually presents as a single lesion and recurs infrequently. On the other hand, OKC often presents with multiple lesions and displays locally aggressive behavior and a high recurrence rate associated with the protein patched homolog 1 (PTCH1) gene mutation. Multiple OOC cases are extremely rare and seem to be aggressive, but their pathogenesis is not fully understood

The persistent hyperglycemic microenvironment in diabetic wounds causes dysfunction of repair cells, resulting in impaired angiogenesis and disorganized extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition. Small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) derived from hypoxia-challenged chorionic plate mesenchymal stem cells (CP-MSC-sEVsHypo) have been explored as novel acellular therapeutics. However, the effects of oxygen tension during culturing parent cells on the pro-regenerative efficacy and mechanisms of CP-MSC-sEVs have not been systematically investigated. In addition, their rapid clearance and limited interacti

A systematic review of the literature from 1993 to 2011 was undertaken examining frequency data of the most common odontogenic cysts and tumors. Seven inclusion criteria were met for the paper to be incorporated. In the preliminary search 5231 papers were identified, of these 26 papers met the inclusion criteria. There were 18 297 odontogenic cysts reported. Of these there were 9982 (54.6%) radicular cysts, 3772 (20.6%) dentigerous cysts and 2145 (11.7%) keratocystic odontogenic tumors. With the reclassification of keratocystic odontogenic tumor in 2005 as an odontogenic tumor, there were 8129

Odontogenic cysts originate from remnants of the tooth forming epithelium in the jaws and gingiva. There are various kinds of such cysts with different biological behaviours that carry different patient risks and require different treatment plans. Types of odontogenic cysts can be distinguished by the properties of their epithelial layers in H&E stained samples. Herein we detail a set of image features for automatically distinguishing between four types of odontogenic cyst in digital micrographs and evaluate their effectiveness using two statistical classifiers - a support vector machine (SVM)

Malignant tumors in the oral cavity are relatively rare. About 5% of all malignant growths in the body are localized in the oral cavity. The vast majority of oral malignancies are primary tumors with squamous cell carcinoma being the most frequent and sarcomas occurring very seldom. Secondary tumors caused by hematogenous spread arising from a tumor localized elsewhere in the body are extremely rare. About 1% of all oral cancers are metastases to the jawbones and the surrounding soft tissues. Metastases to the jaws are mainly caused by malignant tumors of the breast, lung, kidney, bone, and co

OBJECTIVE: Extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer (EMMPRIN) is known to induce matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) production. The expression of EMMPRIN in odontogenic cysts has not been previously studied. This study was done to determine the presence and the variability of EMMPRIN expression in various types of odontogenic cysts.
STUDY DESIGN: An immunohistochemical study using a polyclonal anti-EMMPRIN antibody was done using 48 odontogenic cyst cases: 13 odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs), 18 dentigerous cysts (DCs), and 17 periapical cysts (PAs). Twelve cases of normal dental follicles (D

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this report was to assess p53 and MDM2 expression in odontogenic cysts and tumours, as they are known to play important roles in cell proliferation and tumorigenesis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The expression of p53 and MDM2 proteins was determined immunohistochemically in 51 formalin-fixed, paraffin embedded specimens of odontogenic cysts and tumours.
RESULTS: No positivity to p53 was found in the cases studied. MDM2 expression in ameloblastoma was higher than in radicular cysts, but lower than that observed in odontogenic keratocysts. No difference was observed between MD

The aim of this study was to determine whether nucleolar organizer regions (AgNORs) may be of value in distinguishing various odontogenic cysts from the unicystic ameloblastoma. Histological sections were prepared from fifteen cases each of odontogenic keratocyst, residual cyst, dentigerous cyst, unicystic ameloblastoma and conventional ameloblastoma. In each case intra-nuclear AgNOR dots were counted in 100 consecutive basal nuclei. Statistical comparison of the least squares means showed that those areas of unicystic ameloblastomas lined by characteristic epithelium had a significantly lower

An immunoperoxidase method was used to detect involucrin in 47 odontogenic tumors and 35 radicular cysts. Of a total of 40 ameloblastomas, 9 cases were positive for involucrin expression and those positive cases exhibited acanthomatous or follicular patterns. Squamous odontogenic tumors were strongly positive for involucrin, whereas adenomatoid odontogenic tumors gave a negative staining reaction. Involucrin expression in odontogenic tumors was divided into three categories: single cell positive, focally positive, and squamous metaplastic cell positive. Radicular cysts showed a very irregular

BACKGROUND: Odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) is a unique developmental odontogenic cyst that has the potential to behave aggressively and is associated with the nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome. Orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst (OOC) is a distinct, uncommon odontogenic cyst. It significantly differs from OKC not only in its epithelial lining but also in proliferating kinetics, clinical, immunohistochemical and biological behaviour. BRAF gene located on chromosome 7q34 encodes a cytoplasmic serine-threonine kinase. Various immunohistochemical studies have been conducted to express the BRAFV600

Glandular odontogenic cysts (GOCs) are rare developmental odontogenic cysts that may pose significant diagnostic challenges due to their overlapping clinical and radiographic features with other odontogenic lesions. We report a case of a 29-year-old woman who presented with pain and restricted mouth opening associated with an impacted right mandibular third molar. Cone-beam computed tomography revealed a well-defined pericoronal radiolucency attached to the crown of the impacted tooth and extending to the distal root of the adjacent second molar. Based on the characteristic pericoronal locatio

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Odontogenic lesions composed of two or more separate odontogenic cysts are uncommon. The calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) and odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) are odontogenic cysts that exhibit some neoplastic features. Concurrence of these lesions is extremely rare. We report a rare case of COC combined with OKC in a patient and review the relevant literature systemically.
CASE PRESENTATION: In this article, we present a case report of an 18-year-old boy patient with no medical history whose chief complaint was facial asymmetry. A painless swelling in the right side
