Promoting Healthy Organizations Through Urban Nature: Psychological and Physiological Effects in Healthcare Workers.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare professionals experience high levels of stress due to demanding work, especially in metropolitan areas. Nature-based interventions offer potential mental health benefits. This randomized intervention study aimed to evaluate the effects of nature immersion therapies on mental health outcomes in healthcare workers with different psychological risk in Bogota, Colombia. METHODS: During a period of 6 months, a total of 82 healthcare workers from two institutions were assigned to three groups: two exposed weekly to nature (parks and forests) and one control group with monthly

Assessing the Value of Biosimilars: A Cost-Effectiveness Approach for Managed Care Organizations.

Biologic medications are essential for treating chronic diseases but come with high costs, prompting interest in biosimilars as more affordable alternatives. Biosimilars are highly similar to FDA-approved biologics in terms of safety and efficacy, though not identical. Managed Care Organizations (MCOs), especially those contracted by Medicaid in New York, play a key role in formulary management and cost containment. Despite over 600 approved biologics, only approximately 69 biosimilars are available, and their adoption varies widely. This study evaluates cost and clinical outcomes across three

High Rates of Mental Health Disorders in Civilian Employees Working in Police Organizations.

Working in a police organization often involves being exposed to potentially traumatic events and stressful circumstances regardless of occupation or rank. Police mental health is a public health concern, but the mental health of civilian employees working in police organizations has been much less studied. The current study aims to compare the frequency of mental health conditions in both police officers and civilians. This was evaluated by measuring mean scores on several mental health screening tools including scales to determine symptom severity for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) wit

Participation of People With Impairments in Seniors' Organizations: Conditions and Limitations on Inclusion.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: While older adults' social participation has attracted sustained attention, the realities faced by seniors with impairments in this area are still understudied. Social representations are formed from socially constructed opinions regarding a given object and have four functions (knowledge, identity, orientation, justification). The purpose of this article is to document the social representations that exist within seniors' organizations regarding participation by older people with impairments. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: In this mixed-methods study, an exploratory

The role of patient advocacy organizations in shaping medical research: the Pompe model.

The Pompe model is the term used by the Pompe community to describe the relationship that exists between the patient community, the medical/scientific community, and industry. The development of the Pompe model represented a new paradigm for the involvement of patients in new treatments-and also for scientists and pharmaceutical companies. It saw patients developing a sense of agency, of involvement in the process of treatment development rather than powerless recipients or (if lucky) occasional spectators. At the same time, as described below, it benefited the other partners in the process wi

Organ donor screening practices for Strongyloides stercoralis infection among US organ procurement organizations.

BACKGROUND: Targeted donor screening for strongyloidiasis performed at the time of organ procurement can prevent this life-threatening donor-derived infection. METHOD: The Association of Organ Procurement Organizations surveyed members to determine the number of US organ procurement organizations (OPOs) performing donor screening for Strongyloides infection and their screening practices. RESULTS: All 58 OPOs responded to the survey. Only 6 (10%) currently screen donors for strongyloidiasis; most OPOs started 6-36 months before the survey and one started 6 years prior. All used risk-based cri

Random or predictable?: Adoption patterns of chronic care management practices in physician organizations.

BACKGROUND: Theories, models, and frameworks used by implementation science, including Diffusion of Innovations, tend to focus on the adoption of one innovation, when often organizations may be facing multiple simultaneous adoption decisions. For instance, despite evidence that care management practices (CMPs) are helpful in managing chronic illness, there is still uneven adoption by physician organizations. This exploratory paper leverages this natural variation in uptake to describe inter-organizational patterns in adoption of CMPs and to better understand how adoption choices may be related

A multicriteria decision making approach applied to improving maintenance policies in healthcare organizations.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare organizations have far greater maintenance needs for their medical equipment than other organization, as many are used directly with patients. However, the literature on asset management in healthcare organizations is very limited. The aim of this research is to provide more rational application of maintenance policies, leading to an increase in quality of care. METHODS: This article describes a multicriteria decision-making approach which integrates Markov chains with the multicriteria Measuring Attractiveness by a Categorical Based Evaluation Technique (MACBETH), to f

The Spatial Properties of Radical Environmental Organizations in the UK: Do or Die!

Radical environmental groups and their members have a wide and varied agenda which often encompasses both local and global issues. In their efforts to call attention to environmental problems, communicate with like-minded groups, and mobilize support for their activities, radical environmental organizations also produce an enormous amount of text, which can be used to estimate the complex communications and task-based networks that underlie these organizations. Moreover, the tactics employed to garnish attention for these groups' agenda can range from peaceful activities such as information di

Overview of progeny-test programs of artificial-insemination organizations in the United States.

Characteristics of progeny-test (PT) programs of artificial insemination (AI) organizations in the United States were examined for changes since 1960. Mean number of bulls that were progeny tested annually by major AI organizations during the mid 1990s was 11 for Ayrshires, 24 for Brown Swiss, 21 for Guernseys, 1261 for Holsteins, 112 for Jerseys, and 3 for Milking Shorthorns. Mean parent age at progeny-test (PT) bull birth decreased except for Milking Shorthorns; mean age of maternal grandsire at bull birth decreased for Holsteins and Jerseys but increased for other breeds. For Holsteins, mea

The Vaccine Safety Datalink: immunization research in health maintenance organizations in the USA.

The Vaccine Safety Datalink is a collaborative project involving the National Immunization Program of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and several large health maintenance organizations in the USA. The project began in 1990 with the primary purpose of rigorously evaluating concerns about the safety of vaccines. Computerized data on vaccination, medical outcome (e.g. outpatient visits, emergency room visits, hospitalizations, and deaths) and covariates (e.g. birth certificates, census data) are prospectively collected and linked under joint protocol at multiple health maintenance

Strengthening Emergency Department Health Initiatives Through Partnership With Health Departments and Community Organizations.

The emergency department (ED) increasingly functions as the medical safety net for the American public, many of whom have complex social needs. Public health interventions can help reduce ED utilization but often require ongoing social services not available in the ED. Collaborations among the ED, public health departments, and other community organizations can lead to successful population health interventions that would not be possible in isolation. The ED is an optimal location for the detection of new cases of existing infectious diseases as well as novel pathogens, such as COVID-19, and d

Why patient organizations are important to improve care for people with Lynch syndrome.

Improving health care requires patient involvement. For people with Lynch syndrome, general and specific areas can be identified in which it is important for health care professionals to collaborate with patients to improve care. This collaboration is mutually beneficial; better care for the patients, reduction of work load and higher chance of funding of research proposals for health care professionals. Patient organizations are comprised of patients that are often more educated and motivated to participate in discussions and workshops. In addition, patient organizations have access to a netw

Vector-borne disease surveillance and control resource needs in Colorado public health organizations.

Since 2002, Colorado has experienced a high vector-borne disease (VBD) burden from diseases like West Nile fever, plague, and tularemia. Recent evidence underscores a lack of vector-borne surveillance and control program capacity across public health organizations, prompting our evaluation of funding and resource needs for such programs in Colorado. We assessed the needs, organizational capacity, and mitigation strategies of Colorado public health organizations' VBD programs using a convergent mixed methods study design. Between January and May 2024, we surveyed and interviewed key public heal

Fortifying healthcare: exploring organizational resilience in Israeli healthcare organizations - a quasi-longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Health Organizations (HOs) worldwide are vital to any nation's capacity to withstand crises. The heightened focus on organizational resilience (OR) can be largely attributed to the global COVID-19 pandemic. The terror attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, underscored the essential nature of resilience in healthcare settings. By emphasizing OR's components, HOs can enhance their ability to anticipate, respond to, and recover from disruptions. This research hypothesized that the terror attack would serve as a catalyst for enhancing organizational resilience within healthcare organizat
