Transcranial direct current stimulation modifies cortical excitability and in consequence some cerebral functions. In the present study we aimed to elucidate whether tDCS could affect temperature and pain perceptions in healthy subjects testing different stimulation parameters. A total of 20 healthy subjects were studied by means of quantitative sensory testing. Two different experiments were performed. First, we studied the effects of 15 minutes 2 mA anodal transcranial direct current stimulation applied over left M1 and parietal cortex in two separated sessions. Then, we tested the effects o

BACKGROUND: Alpha power is believed to have an inverse relationship with the perception of pain. Increasing alpha power through an external stimulus may, therefore, induce an analgesic effect. Here, we attempt to modulate the perception of a moderately painful acute laser stimulus by separately entraining three frequencies across the alpha band: 8, 10 and 12 Hz.
METHODS: Participants were exposed to either visual or auditory stimulation at three frequencies in the alpha-band range and a control frequency. We collected verbal pain ratings of laser stimuli from participants following 10 minutes

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated gender differences in pain perception in quantitative sensory testing. Thus, we hypothesized that there are differences in men and women with lumbar disc herniation awaiting lumbar sequestrectomy. To elucidate the differences in pain perception between men and women, we carried out a prospective clinical monocentric trial using quantitative sensory testing.
METHODS: With institutional ethical approval, patients with radiculopathy awaiting lumbar sequestrectomy were examined the day before surgery. Preoperative pain was assessed using quantitative

Pain is a complex subjective experience, associated with neurovegetative, affective and cognitive rapid changes. Biological, psychosocial and contextual factors may contribute. Chronic inflammation, of whatever cause, is the leading contributor to chronic pain. The mast cell directs both the inflammatory process and the shift to chronic pain, mediating through the production of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) and other neurotrophic molecules. Women, in the fertile age, are biologically more vulnerable to chronic inflammation, as fluctuations of estrogens are agonist factors of mast cells degranulati

Vasopressin (AVP) appears in the cerebrospinal fluid and plays an important role in nociceptive modulation in the central nervous system. The effect of increased concentration of AVP in the cerebrospinal fluid on the excitability of the hypoglossal nerve nucleus was investigated. The experiments were carried out on rats under chloralose anesthesia. Amplitudes of the retractory evoked tongue jerks (ETJ) of the outstretched tongue during the perfusion of cerebral ventricles with solutions containing AVP or its antagonists and also opioid and serotonin antagonists were recorded. Perfusion of the

Prostanoids are a group of bioactive lipids working as local mediators and include D, E, F and I types of prostaglandins (PGs) and thromboxanes. Prostacyclin (PGI2) acts on platelets and blood vessels to inhibit platelet aggregation and to cause vasodilatation, and is thought to be important for vascular homeostasis. Aspirin-like drugs, including indomethacin, which inhibit prostanoid biosynthesis, suppress fever, inflammatory swelling and pain, and interfere with female reproduction, suggesting that prostanoids are involved in these processes, although it is not clear which prostanoid is the

This study investigated the effects of experimentally induced acute pain on body image and sensory testing. A total of 91 pain-free participants were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 groups: injection (pain), sham injection, or control. Measures were taken 3 times in each group: at baseline, during the testing phase, and once the pain had subsided. The study included both sensory testing and body image measures. Participants in the injection group showed significant increases in body image distortion during the testing phase ( P < 0.001, η 2 = 0.19), alongside larger area of pain distribution ( P <

INTRODUCTION: Approximately one-quarter of Canadians experience chronic pain, a debilitating condition often necessitating opioid use, which raises concerns regarding dependency and overdose risks. As an alternative, we developed the HYlaDO program (Hypnose de la Douleur, hypnosis of Pain in French), a novel self-hypnosis approach for chronic pain management. The development of this program followed the ORBIT model, a comprehensive framework for designing interventions encompassing several phases ranging from design to efficacy assessment.
METHODS: In the present work, we conducted a prelimin

Background and aims Pain is a disabling symptom in knee osteoarthritis (KOA) and its underlying mechanism remains poorly understood. Dysfunction of descending pain modulatory pathways and reduced pain inhibition enhance pain facilitation in many chronic pain syndromes but do not fully explain pain levels in chronic musculoskeletal conditions. The objective of this study is to explore the association of clinical variables with pain intensity perception in KOA individuals with varying levels of Conditioned Pain Modulation (CPM) response. Methods This is a cross-sectional, exploratory analysis us

PURPOSE: To evaluate the evolution of a set of proposed pain biomarkers in the saliva of subjects following Advanced Surface Ablation (ASA), in order to determine their validity as objective pain measures.
METHODS: A multicenter, prospective, and descriptive study was carried out to assess the variations between biomarkers and perceived pain. The Inclusion criteria were healthy subjects who underwent a bilateral, alcohol-assisted surface ablation with epithelial removal (ASA). Pain intensity before and after surgery was assessed by Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and the Numeric Pain Rating Scale (

Hypnosis is increasingly used in clinical contexts to improve pain management and is supported by experimental research, showing reduced pain perception to controlled nociceptive stimuli. This study investigated spatial selectivity of focused hypnotic analgesia (FHA), a technique used to reduce pain in one restricted body part. Series of brief contact heat stimuli were applied randomly to the right and left arm in 40 healthy participants, before, during and after suggestion of FHA targeting one arm. Pain intensity and unpleasantness were assessed after each stimulus using numerical ratings sca

The psychological stress of competition is a powerful stimulus affecting numerous hormones, which in turn change how pain is perceived. This study investigated whether a kumdo (kendo) team competition may be related to changes in hormones and pain. Seventeen healthy male kumdo practitioners participated in this experiment. Pain experiments were conducted by applying noxious stimuli with a thermal stimulator 10 min before a kumdo competition and 30 min post-competition. Serum testosterone, cortisol, beta-endorphin levels, pain thresholds, pain ratings at 48 °C and during blood sampling (samplin

Recent studies have demonstrated a hypoalgesia in hypertensive subjects. This study reports and evaluates factors responsible for the expression of the hypoalgesic behavior demonstrated by genetically hypertensive rats of the Okamoto-Aoki strain (SHR) as compared to normotensive age-matched Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY). Analgesiometric assays were conducted by the hot plate method. SHR's hypoalgesic behavior was reversed by subcutaneously administered naloxone. The intravenous administration of naloxone did not alter arterial pressure or heart rate in either SHR or WKY. Subcutaneous administration

This systematic review aims to reassess the expanding role of the cerebellum in pain perception, challenging its traditional and simplistic association with the motor domain. Pain perception is a complex experience shaped by sensory, emotional, and cognitive factors, with recent findings underlining the cerebellum's influence over these systems. This paper evaluates findings from 24 relevant studies to elucidate key findings with regard to pain and their potential clinical applications. The cerebellum's role in pain processing is assessed through its interaction with nociceptive pathways, pain

BACKGROUND: Despite neck pain being a common complaint for people with migraine, little is known about how individuals perceive the relationship between their migraine and neck pain. Exploring their beliefs and perceptions could provide valuable understanding to improve overall management and reduce the burden of migraine and neck pain.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate individual perspectives on how migraine and neck pain relate.
METHODS: A retrospective qualitative study was performed. Seventy participants (mean age 39.2, 60 female) were recruited via community and social media advertisements, an

INTRODUCTION: Joint bleeds in haemophilia cause destruction of articular structures, impaired function and pain. Up to 70% of people with haemophilia (PWH) report chronic pain. Little is known about the pain experiences in PWH in the UK.
AIM: To identify prevalence and perceptions of pain among PWH living in the UK.
METHODS: A cross-sectional, non-interventional survey study conducted among PWH (all severities). The survey incorporated elements from validated tools (EQ-5D; EQ-VAS) and was distributed via participating treatment centres.
RESULTS: Five hundred and ninety-nine PWH responded, 9

OBJECTIVE: To examine factors that influence teachers' perceptions of and responses to chronic pain in students.
METHODS: Two-hundred and sixty classroom teachers responded to a vignette describing a student with limb pain. The 2 x 2 x 2 factorial design included conditions that varied by (a) the presence or absence of documented organic evidence for the pain, (b) cooperative vs. confrontational parent-teacher interactions, and (c) the presence or absence of communication from the medical team. Teachers rated pain severity and impairment, relief from classroom responsibilities, extent of acco
