Metabolic responses of purple phototrophic bacteria to elevated hydrogen partial pressure: Metatranscriptomic insights into biohydrogen production and consumption.

During biohydrogen production, self-generated gas accumulation can lead to elevated hydrogen partial pressure (HPP) in the headspace. However, the effects of elevated HPP on hydrogen yield in photo fermentation systems and the metabolic responses of phototrophic bacteria (PPB) under such conditions remain poorly understood. This study investigated the effects of elevated HPP on PPB-based biohydrogen production and examined the underlying metabolic responses using metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analysis. PPB maintained efficient H2 production (0.67 ± 0.09 L H2·g COD-1; 0.09 ± 0.01 L H2·L-1·

Effect of first order chemical reactions through tissue-blood interface on the partial pressure distribution of inhaled gas.

Gas exchange is an essential process to get fresh oxygenated air from the environment. In the human respiratory system, partial pressure is responsible for exchanging gas between tissue-blood capillary (inter capillary). However, the mechanisms of partial pressure distribution in the human respiratory system remain incompletely understood in terms of inter-capillary transmission with tissue porosity and reactive boundary conditions. In this paper, we worked on the spatial (radial) and temporal variations of inhaled gas partial pressure through inter capillary. We assumed that the tissue of alv

Prognosis value of partial arterial oxygen pressure in patients with septic shock subjected to pre-hospital invasive ventilation.

OBJECTIVE: Mechanical ventilation can help improve the prognosis of septic shock. While adequate delivery of oxygen to the tissue is crucial, hyperoxemia may be deleterious. Invasive out-of-hospital ventilation is often promptly performed in life-threatening emergencies. We propose to determine whether the arterial oxygen pressure (PaO2) at the intensive care unit (ICU) admission is associated with mortality in patients with septic shock subjected to pre-hospital mechanical ventilation. METHODS: We performed a monocentric retrospective observational study on 77 patients. PaO2 was measured at

Partial inhibition of activin receptor-like kinase 4 attenuates pressure overload-induced cardiac fibrosis and improves cardiac function.

BACKGROUND: Activin receptor-like kinase 4 (ALK4), a downstream receptor of transforming growth factor-β superfamily, is highly expressed in the mammal heart. Upregulated ALK4 expression and activated ALK4-small mother against decapentaplegic (Smad)2/3 signaling have been reported to play a pivotal role in tumorigenesis and in the development of systemic sclerosis. However, the role of ALK4-Smad2/3 pathway in the pathogenesis of cardiac hypertrophy and cardiac fibrosis remains unknown. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, the mice with heterozygous knocking out of ALK4 gene (ALK4) were generat

The level of partial pressure of carbon dioxide affects organ perfusion in respiratory failure patients undergoing pressure support ventilation with venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation: a prospective study.

BACKGROUND: We evaluated the influence of different partial carbon dioxide pressure (PaCO2) levels on organ perfusion in patients with respiratory failure receiving pressure-support ventilation with veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (V-V ECMO). METHODS: In this twelve patients prospective study, ECMO gas-flow was decreased from baseline (PaCO2 < 40 mmHg) until PaCO2 increased by 5-10 mmHg (High-CO2 phase). Resistance indices of gut, spleen, and snuffbox artery, the peripheral perfusion index (PPI), and heart rate variability were measured at baseline and High-CO2 phase. RESULTS

[Preliminary report on partial pressure changes of oxygen and carbon dioxide in umbilical artery and vein before and after the first breath in Chinese neonates I-The group difference of partial pressure of oxygen and carbon dioxide between umbilical artery and vein in newborns].

Objective: The fetus has no actual respiration, and the newborn begins to breathe after birth. We assume that the first breath dominantly generated by hypoxia. In this study, the changes and lowest limit of blood oxygen partial pressureof umbilical artery (PuaO2) after chemoreceptor were analyzed to explore the mechanism of neonatal spontaneous breathing. Methods: With signed consent form by all fetal parents before birth, 14 newborns successfully completed the umbilical artery or vein catheterization and drawn blood according to the heartbeat. All blood samples analyzed by blood gas analyzer,

Contrasting effects of lower body positive pressure on upper airways resistance and partial pressure of carbon dioxide in men with heart failure and obstructive or central sleep apnea.

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to test the effects of rostral fluid displacement from the legs on transpharyngeal resistance (Rph), minute volume of ventilation (Vmin), and partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PCO2) in men with heart failure (HF) and either obstructive (OSA) or central sleep apnea (CSA). BACKGROUND: Overnight rostral fluid shift relates to severity of OSA and CSA in men with HF. Rostral fluid displacement may facilitate OSA if it shifts into the neck and increases Rph, because pharyngeal obstruction causes OSA. Rostral fluid displacement may also facilitate CSA if it shifts int

Numerical estimation of optimal limits of cerebral blood flow and oxygen partial pressure in brain tissue of preterm infants.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: For normal brain function, a sufficient supply of oxygen to resident cells is essential. A lack of oxygen delivery can cause irreversible neuronal damage within minutes. This situation is especially critical for preterm infants and can lead to lifelong mental and motor disabilities. Although cerebral blood flow (CBF) and tissue partial pressure of oxygen (PtO2) provide important information on oxygen delivery and consumption in the brain, appropriate clinically suitable measuring techniques are still lacking. METHODS: Mathematical modeling of cerebral oxygen transpor

Improvements in Exhaled Partial Pressure Carbon Dioxide After Interventional Bronchoscopy: Two Case Reports of Malignant and Benign Bronchial Obstruction.

Bronchial obstruction disrupts gas exchange, thus leading to a ventilation-perfusion mismatch. This report presents two cases demonstrating the utility of intrabronchial capnography in the management of airway obstruction. In case 1, stenting for recurrent lung cancer rapidly increased left lung perfusion from 13% to 59% with normalized carbon dioxide levels and improved imaging. In Case 2, tuberculosis-induced obstruction required secondary intervention, thus gradually increasing perfusion from 7% to 28% over time. Both cases highlighted the role of capnography in detecting airway collapse, a

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) rather than warming and eutrophication directly affects partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) in mesocosm systems.

Environmental warming and eutrophication pose significant challenges to shallow lake systems, where dissolved organic matter (DOM) serves as a diverse and intricate mixture of organic macromolecules, playing a pivotal role in aquatic ecosystems. Despite its complexity, comprehending the interplay between environmental changes and DOM composition alterations and their subsequent impacts on aqueous CO2 partial pressure (pCO2) is essential for a better understanding of carbon cycling. Yet, our current understanding in this realm remains limited. To address this gap, mesocosm systems were establis

Partial blood oxygen pressure and pulmonary ventilation changes in patients with fractures with a view to traumatic fat embolism development.

The body's response to the effects of mechanical injury, taking the form of shock during the first hours and the onset of fat embolism in the subsequent period, is substantially higher in patients with multiple or associated injuries, both as regards the severity of manifestations and prognostic risk. Also the death rate due to this sort of complication is seen rising. Two groups of injured persons with isolated (n = 33) and multiple fractures (n = 33) were used to show that dynamic follow-up of PaO2 in the blood could serve as a criterion of the risk of fat embolism development in the body an

Hydrogen Production During Ethylene Glycol Photoreactions Over Ag-Pd/TiO2 at Different Partial Pressures of Oxygen.

The reaction of ethylene glycol has been studied over Ag-Pd/TiO2 (anatase) under photo-irradiation while monitoring the reaction products (in the gas and liquid phases) as a function of time and at different partial pressures of molecular oxygen. The catalyst contained metal particles with a mean size of about 1 nm, most likely in the form of alloy (TEM, STEM, and XPS). The complex reaction network involves hydrogen abstraction, C-C bond dissociation, de-carbonylation and water gas shift ultimately yielding hydrogen and CO2. The two main competing reactions were found to be, photo reforming an

Loss of P53 regresses cardiac remodeling induced by pressure overload partially through inhibiting HIF1α signaling in mice.

The tumor suppressor p53 is recognized as the guardian of the genome in cell cycle and cell death. P53 expression increases as cardiac hypertrophy worsens to heart failure, suggesting that p53 may play important role in cardiac remodeling. In the present study, deletion of p53 in the mice heart would ameliorate cardiac hypertrophy induced by pressure overload. The role of p53 on heart was investigated using in vivo models. Cardiac hypertrophy in mice was induced by transverse aortic banding surgery. The extent of cardiac hypertrophy was examined by echocardiography, as well as pathological and
