Clinical blindness in conjunction with childhood bacterial meningitis.

Although rarely reported, bilateral loss of vision is a severe complication of childhood bacterial meningitis. We assessed its frequency in five prospective treatment trials performed in Europe, Latin America, and Angola in 1984-2017. Course of illness, follow-up findings, and child's sight were recorded. Sight was examined at discharge, and conditions permitting, also at 1-3 months post-hospitalization and in Angola on hospital day 7. Experienced pediatricians diagnosed clinical blindness if the child did not make eye contact, did not blink or move the eyes, or remained unresponsive to bright

Obstacle Segmentation with Encoder-Decoder Architectures in Low Structured Environments for the Navigation of Visually Impaired People.

Orientation and mobility of visually impaired people usually requires intensive training with mobility aids (e.g. white canes). Assistance systems capture information from the environment, process sensor data and provide the results to the impaired user. The paper presents an approach for efficient segmentation of obstacles in low-structured outdoor environments using encoder-decoder deep learning architectures and depth images. Therefore, an efficient method for generating training data using the v-disparity method is presented. Based on an extensive dataset of RGB and depth images and the co

Preparing participants for the use of the tongue visual sensory substitution device.

PURPOSE: Visual sensory substitution devices (SSDs) convey visual information to a blind person through another sensory modality. Using a visual SSD in various daily activities requires training prior to use the device independently. Yet, there is limited literature about procedures and outcomes of the training conducted for preparing users for practical use of SSDs in daily activities. METHODS: We trained 29 blind adults (9 with congenital and 20 with acquired blindness) in the use of a commercially available electro-tactile SSD, BrainPort. We describe a structured training protocol adapted

Complex visual hallucinations in the visually impaired: the Charles Bonnet Syndrome.

Visually impaired patients may experience complex visual hallucinations, a condition known as the Charles Bonnet Syndrome. Patients usually possess insight into the unreality of their visual experiences, which are commonly pleasant but may sometimes cause distress. The hallucinations consist of well-defined, organized, and clear images over which the subject has little control. It is believed that they represent release phenomena due to de-afferentation of the visual association areas of the cerebral cortex, leading to a form of phantom vision. Cognitive defects, social isolation, and sensory

A brief report of the prevalence of chronic and acute health conditions among blind American adults.

BACKGROUND: Prior research demonstrates disparities in the prevalence of certain chronic and acute health conditions among persons who are blind (PWB) compared to non-blind persons, such as diabetes and infectious diseases. However, a comprehensive understanding of the prevalence of chronic and acute health conditions among PWB is currently lacking. OBJECTIVE: The present study addressed this gap by examining the prevalence of chronic and acute conditions among blind persons, and examining differences by gender. METHODS: The present study surveyed 410 PWB residing in the U.S. about their hea

Wearables for persons with blindness and low vision: form factor matters.

Based on statistics from the WHO and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness, an estimated 43.3 million people have blindness and 295 million have moderate and severe vision impairment globally as of 2020, statistics expected to increase to 61 million and 474 million respectively by 2050, staggering numbers. Blindness and low vision (BLV) stultify many activities of daily living, as sight is beneficial to most functional tasks. Assistive technologies for persons with blindness and low vision (pBLV) consist of a wide range of aids that work in some way to enhance one's function

Fania (Fanny) Kaplan and the attempted assassination of Vladimir Lenin: Ophthalmologic considerations.

PURPOSE: Fania (Fanny) Kaplan (1890-1918), who was reportedly visually impaired, confessed to the attempted assassination of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin (1870-1924) in 1918 by shooting him with a pistol. The precise nature of her visual loss is unknown and raises doubts about whether she had sufficient visual function to perform the act. METHODS: Historical documents were reviewed. RESULTS: The cause of Kaplan's visual loss is uncertain but occurred following a bomb blast in 1906. If the explosion was the cause, then she most likely had bilateral closed-globe, blast-related injuries, perhap

Robust computer-vision based construction site detection for assistive-technology applications.

PURPOSE: Navigating urban environments poses significant challenges for individuals who are blind or have low vision, especially in areas affected by construction. Construction zones introduce hazards such as uneven surfaces, barriers, hazardous materials, excessive noise, and altered routes that obstruct familiar paths and compromise safety. Although navigation tools assist in trip planning, they often overlook these temporary obstacles. Existing hazard detection systems also struggle with the visual variability of construction sites. METHODS: We developed a computer vision-based assistive s

Proposal of a Focused Self-Attention LLM Allowing to Interpret Fragmentary Requests from Visually Impaired People.

The development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been widely applied as an assistive technology for individuals with visual impairment (VI), providing various assistive technologies such as object recognition and obstacle detection. The accurate and powerful systems can be triggered through voice commands and thus significantly enhance the life experiences of users with VI. However, most assistive technologies simply accept a clear and exact command as input, ignoring the cognition and memory problems in blind people. If the users forget some parts of the full command (e.g., name of a targe
