The objective of the study was to determine whether a relationship exists between the two common methods for assessing postural stability in athletes: the time-to-stabilisation (TTS) via force-plate and the Biodex Balance System (BBS). The conditions under which these measurements assess dynamic postural control may not provide sufficient feedback to practitioners. Fourty-four amateur soccer players with no history of musculoskeletal disorders volunteered for the study. Pearson correlation was used to compare the anterior-posterior (AP), medio-lateral (ML), and the overall stability indexes me

Cluster sets may lead to enhanced power (PW) production by allowing for partial recovery. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of cluster sets vs. traditional sets on plyometric jump PW, ground reaction force, take-off velocity (TOV), and jump height (JH). Twenty-six recreationally trained college men completed 3 testing sessions, which involved performing repeated body-weight (BW) plyometric squat jumps across 3 different set configurations: traditional (2 sets of 10 with 90-second rest between sets), cluster 1 (4 sets of 5 with 30-second rest between sets), and cluster 2 (1

Force-plate countermovement jump (CMJ) testing is widely used to assess neuromuscular status, yet monitoring interpretation often relies on best-trial values from abbreviated protocols, potentially biasing conclusions when the session maximum occurs beyond the sampled attempts. We mapped peak-trial timing across a six-trial clustered (3 + 3) CMJ protocol for seven outcome and strategy force-time metrics, and tested whether this peak-trial pattern was preserved between personal best (PB) and typical state (TS) monitoring sessions, both defined using modified reactive strength index (mRSI) as th

PURPOSE: Different studies indicate that female players in team sports such as soccer tend to have a lower change-of-direction (COD) deficit (CODD) than their male counterparts and that players who performed better in linear and curved sprints tended to have a worse CODD, suggesting that maximum speed does not equate to a faster COD. This study assessed how performance variables related to speed and jumping influence the variability of %CODD among adult highly trained female soccer players.
METHODS: Fifty-two highly trained female soccer players (age 23.1 [3.25] y; height 163.6 [5.49] cm; wei

Plyometric studies emphasise pre-post change, but coaches need to know what remains after the block ends. This single-cohort study followed 26 collegiate sprinters through 12 weeks of Monday plyometric training and 4 weeks of withdrawal, without a parallel control group. During intervention, 30 m sprint time and arm-assisted countermovement jump (CMJ) height were measured at 0, 24, 48, 72, and 96 h; 0 and 72 h were retained during withdrawal. Mixed models showed large week effects for sprint, F(1, 1534) = 2272.01, partial η2 = 0.597, 95% CI [0.570, 0.622], and CMJ, F(1, 1534) = 2537.82, partia

Inter-limb asymmetry is frequently evaluated during bilateral tasks such as the countermovement jump (CMJ), typically using discrete peak-based metrics. However, these approaches may inadequately capture the complex, time-varying nature of inter-limb coordination. This study examined inter-limb asymmetry during CMJ in youth football players using both discrete and continuous assessments, with consideration of limb dominance. Forty-three male youth academy football players (14 ± 1.1 years) performed three maximal bilateral CMJs with data collected using dual force platforms and three-dimensiona

PURPOSE: Jump and linear sprint performances both correlate with pro-agility performance. However, correlation does not imply causation, and potential confounders may affect the correlation. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the relationship between change-of-direction (COD) performance and COD deficits (COD-D) in linear-sprint and countermovement-jump (CMJ) -related performance using multiple stepwise linear-regression models.
METHODS: The study included 42 female national-level intercollegiate athletes. The 10- and 20-m linear-sprint and pro-agility times, COD-D, CMJ height, and phas

Multidirectional jumping and repeated sprint ability are crucial performance factors in basketball. The main aim of this investigation was to examine the neuromuscular performance and body balance adaptations following basketball-specific combined training programs based on drop jump and multidirectional repeated sprint versus multidirectional plyometric training. Forty-two professional basketball male players participated in the current investigation and were randomly assigned to three groups: a combined group (COMB; n = 14), a multidirectional jump group (MJG; n = 14) and an active control g

BACKGROUND: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely used by athletes and those who exercise, yet their influence on the molecular responses to exercise remains unclear. Prior studies have often focused on a limited set of molecular pathways, potentially overlooking broader regulator effects of NSAIDs on skeletal muscle signaling. Therefore, we conducted a systems biology study of skeletal muscle biopsies taken before and after exercise, in combination with NSAID consumption, using transcriptomics and metabolomics, to identify differentially enriched pathways and biofunctions.

PURPOSE: Plyometric jump training (PJT) is an effective means of developing speed, strength, and neuromuscular parameters in youth athletes. However, the effect of PJT on performance outcomes as a function of biological maturation remains unclear.
METHODS: Employing a 12-week training intervention, 37 youth male soccer players aged 10-18 years were stratified by biological maturity using the Mirwald equation (pre-PHV versus post-PHV) and subsequently randomized to a PJT group (pre-PHV: n = 10, post-PHV: n = 10) or a control group (pre-PHV: n = 7, post-PHV: n = 10). The PJT group trained twice

BACKGROUND: The running performance of middle-distance and long-distance runners is determined by factors such as maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), velocity at VO2max (vVO2max), maximum metabolic steady state (MMSS), running economy, and sprint capacity. Strength training is a proven strategy for improving running performance in endurance runners. However, the effects of different strength training methods on the determinants of running performance are unclear.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this systematic review with meta-analysis was to compare the effect of different strength training methods (e.g.,

This study assessed changes in the sprint force-velocity (Fv) profile of young football players according to their maturity status following an 8-week plyometric training program. Jump (CMJ) and sprint performance (5-m and 30-m) of 34 players were evaluated, and the sprint Fv profile was calculated. Participants were categorized based on their years from/to peak height velocity (PHV). The training program included three football-specific training sessions and two strength-training sessions with plyometric exercises per week. MANOVA revealed initial differences between maturity groups in body m
