Behavior Change in the Diabetic Foot: A Primer.

Diabetic foot complications are often preventable with consistent self-care and early intervention, yet adherence remains low. This article explores how behavior change models, psychological insights, and practical clinical strategies can support patient engagement and reduce ulcer recurrence. Using real-world case vignettes and evidence-based techniques, podiatrists are empowered to foster collaborative, long-term care grounded in behavioral science.

Podiatric management in epidermolysis bullosa.

Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) results from genetic defects of molecules in the skin concerned with adhesion. Some of the most common problems seen with EB sufferers are blisters, vesicles, and bullas. Maintaining foot cleanliness, exercising, and wearing shoes are all good preventative measures and important in EB foot care.

Implementation of the enhanced paper grip test in podiatric practice: A clinical audit of feasibility and association with recent falls.

BACKGROUND: Falls in older adults remain a major clinical concern. Although the Enhanced Paper Grip Test (EPGT), provides an objective measure of lower limb strength and has shown promise in controlled settings, its use in routine podiatric practice has not been described. AIM: To audit the implementation of the EPGT in routine private podiatric practice and to explore whether EPGT measures are associated with self-reported recent falls in older adults. METHODS: The EPGT was introduced on a trial basis in three independent private UK podiatry clinics for six months. People (aged ≥60 y) were

Knowledge and practice of foot self-care behaviours in Irish diabetes patients with high-risk feet.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic foot disease is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Patients at high risk of developing diabetic foot disease can reduce their risk, however, by practicing appropriate foot self-care behaviours. Despite this fact, and often despite education regarding appropriate foot care, patients frequently engage in risky foot care practices which place them at risk of foot ulceration. AIM: We aimed to assess knowledge of appropriate foot care behaviours in a cohort of Irish patients at high risk of developing diabetic foot disease attending a multidisciplinary foot c

Predictive factors for lower extremity amputations in patients with diabetic foot disease in Central Australia.

BACKGROUND: Lower extremity amputation (LEA) is a common outcome of diabetic foot disease (DFD) among First Nations Australians; however, data from Central Australia are limited. We therefore identified risk factors for progression to LEA for First Nations Australians at Alice Springs Hospital (ASH). METHODS: All adults with DFD admitted between 2015 and 2020 were included in a retrospective cohort study. Patients were identified using International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision codes for DFD and amputation. A logistic regression and Cox regression model was used to identify risk

Syndactylization: a surgical approach to heloma molle.

Surgical syndactylism is reviewed as an alternative method of treatment for heloma molle of the fourth interspace. This is achieved by excision of the apposing skin surfaces between the fourth and fifth toes. By maintaining intimate apposition of the two toes, permanent syndactylism of the interdigital space is achieved, therefore preventing reformation of the heloma molle.

Tarsal tunnel syndrome: a review of 15 surgical procedures.

The authors reviewed 15 surgical procedures of tarsal tunnel syndrome in 13 patients, seen through the podiatry clinics at Sheridan Road Hospital. Each patient was contacted and asked to state their overall satisfaction in four categories, ranging from poor to excellent. Each case was reviewed with an attempt to correlate patient satisfaction with the etiology involved. The authors report very good or excellent results in 11 of 15 procedures. Three cases resulted in moderate relief of symptoms. One poor result was associated with an unidentified peripheral neuropathy. When trauma was identifie

Case studies 1-3: leg ulcers.

Case studies are presented here by a tissue viability nurse consultant and an advanced podiatrist demonstrating the use of ChloraSolv in clinical practice. The first set of cases is from a community setting, where the tissue viability nurse and district nurse successfully used the product to fully debride hard-to-heal leg ulcers in patients who mostly had been unable to tolerate other forms of debridement. The second set illustrates its use in a podiatry clinic, where the gel removed dry, adherent slough. 'These case studies show that ChloraSolv can be used by any health professional to achiev

The CUBED Versus ABCDE Recognition Tools in the Detection of Malignant Melanomas Arising in the Foot: An Analysis of Four Recent Case Studies in a Single NHS Community Trust.

BACKGROUND: Melanoma of the foot and nail unit carries a worse prognosis than cutaneous melanoma elsewhere because lesions are frequently hidden, misdiagnosed, and therefore diagnosed at more advanced stages. Traditional ABCDE criteria are often insufficient for foot and nail presentations; the CUBED recognition tool was developed to improve detection of atypical plantar and subungual lesions. AIM: To evaluate four consecutive cases of foot melanoma seen in a single NHS community podiatry department, compare case characteristics against ABCDE and CUBED recognition tools, and describe service
