Pigmented Poroma of the Lower Eyelid: A Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND Eyelid tumors belong to a diverse group of neoplasms ranging from benign lesions to malignant tumors. Poromas are common, benign, mostly unpigmented tumors of the epidermal sweat duct unit, that usually grow slowly and occur in elderly people on the palms and soles. In most poroma cases some gene fusions were detected, which were caused by chromosomal aberrations. CASE REPORT We report the atypical case of a 30-year-old female patient suffering for more than 15 years from a solitary, polypoid, pigmented formation with a focal tuberous surface on the left lower eyelid. The lesion was

Dermoscopic features of nonpigmented eccrine poromas in association with their histopathological features.

BACKGROUND: Nonpigmented eccrine poromas (EPs) occasionally mimic various skin tumours, but their dermoscopic features have not been clarified. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the dermoscopic features of nonpigmented EPs in association with their histopathological features. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of the dermoscopic features of 10 histopathologically proven cases of nonpigmented EP at the Department of Dermatology, Shinshu University Hospital (Matsumoto, Japan). RESULTS: Specific features in vascular structures were observed in five of 10 nonpigmented EPs. Three cases showed a polymorphous

Multiple eccrine poromas in the setting of total body irradiation and immunosuppression.

Eccrine poromas are benign, adnexal tumors that most often occur as a solitary lesion on the palm or sole. The occurrence of multiple eccrine poromas is extremely rare. In this report, we describe the development of several eccrine poromas in an acral distribution in a 42-year-old man. Before the appearance of these tumors, the patient had received total body irradiation and allogeneic bone marrow transplantation for treatment of acute lymphocytic leukemia. As a complication of the bone marrow transplant, the patient developed chronic graft-versus-host disease, which was treated with immunosup

Very high frequency ultrasonographic characteristics of poroma: a retrospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Poroma is a rare benign skin tumor, diagnostic challenges of which require advanced imaging. Herein we investigate the ultrasonographic manifestations and clinical value of the very high frequency(VHF) ultrasound in the auxiliary diagnosis of Poroma. METHODS: Clinical data of 24 cases pathologically diagnosed as poroma were retrospectively analyzed by means of high-resolution VHF ultrasound, including size, location, shape, margin, boundary, internal echo and blood flow patterns. RESULTS: VHF ultrasound examination shows that most poroma are located in the epidermis and dermis. T

Poroid Condyloma Versus Poroma With Atypias Because of Human Papillomavirus Infection.

We present the case of a 43-year-old white man with a complex lesion at the base of the penis that combines features of both a poroma and a condyloma with human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, atypias, and focal ductal differentiation. It was a papillomatous lesion with epidermal hyperplasia, which mainly contained focally pigmented monotonous basaloid cells. Ductal lumina with cuticular cells were easily identified. Atypias were focally evidenced, with nuclear enlargement and hyperchromasia. Hypergranulosis and koilocytosis were also present. Immunohistochemical studies indicated p16 and p53

Merkel cell carcinoma arising within a poroma: report of two cases.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) has been reported in association with other types of cutaneous neoplasms within the same lesion, including squamous cell carcinoma, Bowen's disease, actinic keratosis, follicular cysts, trichoblastoma and lentigo maligna, among others. However, the association of MCC and sweat gland tumors has never been described in the literature. We report two unique cases of MCC that developed within cutaneous poromas. A 56-year-old male (Patient 1) and an 81-year-old female (Patient 2) presented with nodules on the upper arm and lower back, respectively. Histopathologic study o

[Apocrine poroma. A relatively little known skin tumor with multilineage differentiation].

Poromas were originally classified as eccrine tumors which predominantly consist of poroid ductal cells and differentiate in the direction of sweat gland ducts. However, there have now been many reports on poromas with additional differential characteristics differentiating in the direction of sebaceous and/or apocrine glands and/or hair follicles. These tumors have been termed apocrine poromas. Multilineage differentiation within a poroma can be explained by the embryological association of the sweat duct with the so-called folliculo-sebaceous-apocrine unit. The clinical and histopathological

Eccrine porocarcinoma (malignant eccrine poroma): a clinicopathologic study of 69 cases.

The clinicopathologic characteristics of 69 cases of eccrine porocarcinoma (EP) have been studied. Seven cases of purely in situ disease are included. Forty patients were female, 29 male with ages ranging from 29 to 91 years (mean 73 years). The lower extremity represented the single most common site (44%). Other common sites were the trunk (15 cases, 24%) and head (11 cases, 18%). The histologic diagnosis of EP was predicated on the basis of an irregular tumor at least partly formed of characteristic poromatous basaloid epithelial cells displaying ductal differentiation, and significant cytol

Malignant eccrine poroma with spinal and cerebrospinal fluid metastases: case report.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: A rare case of metastasizing malignant eccrine poroma (porocarcinoma) is described. This case is unique because metastasis resulted in hydrocephalus in the cerebrospinal fluid and spinal cord compression in the lumbar spine. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 57-year-old man presented with acute confusion, lower limb weakness, and urinary concerns. Investigation revealed acute hydrocephalus and extradural cord compression of the lumbar spine. INTERVENTION: The acute hydrocephalous was treated with a ventriculoperitoneal shunt. The spinal cord and conus were decompressed by la

Merkel cell polyomavirus is a passenger virus in both poroma and porocarcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV) has been studied in several malignant and nonmalignant tissues. However, only in Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) has the connection to tumorigenesis been established. Previously, eccrine porocarcinoma samples were shown to express MCPyV in the majority of samples. We aimed to examine MCPyV in porocarcinoma and poroma samples using MCC as the reference material. METHODS: We analyzed 17 porocarcinoma and 50 poroma samples for the presence of MCPyV using LT antigen immunostaining and DNA detection methods. In addition, 180 MCC samples served as controls.

Targeted molecular profiling reveals genetic heterogeneity of poromas and porocarcinomas.

The genetic landscape of rare benign tumours and their malignant counterparts is still largely unexplored. While recent work showed that mutant HRAS is present in subsets of poromas and porocarcinomas, a more comprehensive genetic view on these rare adnexal neoplasms is lacking. Using high-coverage next generation sequencing, we investigated the mutational profile of 50 cancer-related genes in 12 cases (six poromas and six porocarcinomas). Non-synonymous mutations were found in two-thirds of both poromas and porocarcinomas. Hotspot HRAS mutations were identified in two poromas (p.G13R and p.Q6

Unusual sites for poromas are not very unusual: a survey of 101 cases.

BACKGROUND: Poromas are benign adnexal tumours generally believed to be of eccrine origin, which usually develop on palmoplantar sites. However, it is thought that a percentage of poromas develop on non-palmoplantar or 'unusual' sites. AIM: To review cases of poromas with reference to their clinicoepidemiological characteristics, paying particular attention to the those located on sites other than the palms and soles. METHODS: All histologically confirmed poromas seen at our department between 1994 to 2012 were reviewed. The clinicoepidemiological data recorded included age at diagnosis, gen

Pigmented eccrine poroma: report of an atypical case with the use of dermoscopy.

Poromas are uncommon benign neoplasms originating from the terminal ductal portion of the sweat glands, mainly characterized by skin-colored or pink papules or nodules, usually on the extremities. Due to their rarity, the pigmented form clinical hypothesis is hardly ever suggested and psychopathology is fundamental. We report a case of pigmented eccrine poroma in the right palmer area, a location considered atypical. We stress the importance of dermoscopy as a method for diagnosis of poromas, especially in the differential diagnosis with other pigmented nodular-popular lesions.

Poromatosis in pregnancy: a case of 8 eruptive poromas in the third trimester.

The poroid family of neoplasms includes hidroacanthoma simplex, eccrine poroma, dermal duct tumor, and poroid hidradenoma. These benign adnexal neoplasms are derived from the eccrine or apocrine sweat ducts or glands. Poroid neoplasms, including poromas, have been reported during pregnancy and have been hypothesized to be hormonally influenced. Poromatosis, the occurrence of multiple poromas, rarely has been reported in association with hidrotic ectodermal dysplasia, prior radiation therapy, and non-Hodgkin lymphoma occurring after chemotherapy. We report a case of eruptive poromatosis in preg

Multiple poromas in a bone marrow transplant recipient: A case report.

A poroma is a benign epithelial neoplasm that most commonly presents as a solitary papule on the palm or sole. We report the case of a 25-year-old male, with a history of acute myelogenous leukemia, who developed multiple poromas on the feet. Poromatosis - the occurrence of multiple poromas - has been described in six adults and one child; it appears to be more prevalent in patients with a history of lymphoproliferative disorder or radiation exposure.

An unusually large eccrine poroma: a case report and review of the literature.

The eccrine poroma is an uncommon benign neoplasm previously thought to originate solely from the eccrine sweat gland. Initially believed to present on hairless acral surfaces, a more extensive distribution has been described. We report a case of a 55-year-old man with a slowly growing, 6-cm eccrine poroma on the medial aspect of his right foot of 40 years' duration. Clinicians should be aware that poromas can be of either eccrine or apocrine origin and can occur in areas other than acral skin. They also should understand the subclassification of the poroma family of neoplasms.
