The purpose of this investigation was to measure lower leg compliance before, during and after a 10-day period of bedrest at head-down tilt to test the hypothesis that leg compliance and the capacity for venous pooling is increased by the adaptation to stimulated microgravity. Venous occlusion plethysmography with multiple proximal occlusion pressures was used to obtain compliance measurements in six male subjects. Calf circumference decreased significantly during the tilt (corresponding to a decrease in cross sectional area of 7%) and had not returned to baseline seven days after the end of t

Despite the well-documented medical, physical, and psychological complications associated with this care management option, bed rest remains a frequently prescribed treatment modality for conditions such as pressure ulcers. Cognitive and psychosocial complications of bed rest include depression, learned helplessness, perceptual changes, and fatigue. Physically, complications can include contractures, muscle atrophy, osteoporosis, pathologic fractures, urinary tract infections, decreased cardiac reserve, decreased stroke volume, resting and post-exercise tachycardia, orthostatic hypotension, pu

Arthroscopic anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) is often performed with the use of a thigh tourniquet. Surgeons believe this helps improve visualisation and reduce operative time. However, tourniquet use has been associated with many complications including increased pain, neurovascular injury, venous thromboembolism, haematoma formation, and others. In this article, we describe a method allowing comparable arthroscopic visualisation to be achieved without the aid of a tourniquet for ACLR procedures. The literature evidence relating to this technique as well as tourniquet use for

INTRODUCTION: Orthostatic hypotension (OH) occurs among several populations; elevated temperatures increase an individual's susceptibility, whereas the effect of sleep loss (SL) remains inconclusive. The purpose was: 1) to evaluate the effects of 10 d of heat acclimation (HA) and 28 h of SL on OH; and 2) to determine the best measurements to assess OH in clinical and field settings.
METHODS: There were 11 men (mean +/- SD; age, 20 +/- 1 yr; mass, 81.7 +/- 12.2 kg) who underwent a repeated measures research design. Before and after 90 min of HA, with the 11th day performed in conjunction with

BACKGROUND: Many activities of daily living require significant amounts of muscular strength. Time lines for current strength training guidelines preclude many myocardial infarction patients from receiving strength training as part of their cardiac rehabilitation program. This study was designed to examine the effectiveness and safety of low-to-moderate level strength training in patients early after myocardial infarction.
METHODS: Fifty-seven low-risk men ( < 61 years of age, 6-16 weeks post-infarction) were randomly assigned to a control group or one of three treatment groups. All groups tr

The purpose of this study was to compare different high-intensity interval training (HIIT) protocols with different lengths of work and rest times for a single session (all three had identical work-to-rest ratios and exercise intensities) for cardiac auto-regulation using a wearable device. With a randomized counter-balanced crossover, 13 physically active young male adults (age: 19.4 years, BMI: 21.9 kg/m2) were included. The HIIT included a warm-up of at least 5 min and three protocols of 10 s/50 s (20 sets), 20 s/100 s (10 sets), and 40 s/200 s (5 sets), with intensities ranging from 115 to

OBJECTIVE: To quantify the intensity and investigate cardiovascular and glycemic responses during different capoeira sessions/classes.
METHODS: Twelve participants underwent two capoeira sessions in different rhythms (Benguela and São Bento), and Control session, all conducted in a randomized order (50-min each). Blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR), and heart rate variability (HRV) were measured in the pre-intervention period (15-min) and during a 90-min laboratory recover. During the session HR and HRV were continuously recorded. In the extra laboratorial recovery (16-h) BP, HR, HRV and blo

BACKGROUND: Hip fracture is common in older adults, and can cause severe post-fracture pain. Fascia iliaca nerve block has consequently been used for preoperative analgesia.
METHODS: We performed a randomized, controlled, double-blind clinical trial and recruited older patients with hip fractures. These patients were randomized into two groups and received ultrasound-guided fascia iliaca compartment block using either the supra-inguinal approach (group F) or the classical approach (group C). Heart rate, blood pressure, and resting and exercising visual analog scales were recorded before the p

Cardiovascular health is typically monitored by measuring blood pressure. Here we describe a wireless on-skin system consisting of synchronized sensors for chest electrocardiography and peripheral multispectral photoplethysmography for the continuous monitoring of metrics related to vascular resistance, cardiac output and blood-pressure regulation. We used data from the sensors to train a support-vector-machine model for the classification of haemodynamic states (resulting from exposure to heat or cold, physical exercise, breath holding, performing the Valsalva manoeuvre or from vasopressor ad

The microgravity environment of spaceflight produces rapid cardiovascular changes which are adaptive and appropriate in that setting, but are associated with significant deconditioning and orthostatic hypotension on return to Earth's gravity. The rapidity with which these space flight induced changes appear and disappear provides an ideal model for studying the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms of deconditioning and orthostatic hypotension, regardless of etiology. Since significant deconditioning is seen after flights of very short duration, muscle atrophy due to inactivity plays, at mo

Cardiac disease and depression affect a significant number of individuals every year, and developing effective treatment for depression in cardiac disease could have a substantial impact on public health. Several studies have shown that depression increases cardiac morbidity and mortality and total costs of care and is associated with a poor psychosocial outcome. Psychopharmacological treatment trials have shown that tricyclic antidepressants have antiarrhythmic effects, prolong cardiac conduction, and cause orthostatic hypotension, but do not impair left ventricular function, even in patients

Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is a debilitating autonomic disorder characterized by excessive orthostatic tachycardia and significant functional impairment. Conventional therapies, including beta-blockers, often provide incomplete relief or are poorly tolerated. Ivabradine, a selective If channel inhibitor, reduces heart rate without affecting blood pressure or myocardial contractility, making it a promising option, particularly in post-COVID-19 POTS. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the efficacy and safety of ivabradine in patients with POTS. PubMed, Embas

Ultramarathon participation is growing in popularity and exposes runners to unique stressors including extreme temperatures, high altitude, and exceedingly long exercise duration. However, the acute effects of ultramarathon participation on the cardiovascular system are not well understood. To determine the acute effects of trail ultramarathon participation on central artery stiffness and hemodynamics, 41 participants (9 F, 32 M) participating in the 2023 Western States Endurance Run underwent measures of carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cf-PWV) and pulse wave analysis pre- and <1 h post-r

State Ceremonial and Public Duties (SCPD) expose soldiers to extreme physiological stressors, predisposing to syncope. Despite a high incidence of syncope in military personnel, physiological responses during SCPD are unknown. Data were collected across three ceremonial parades (n = 41; 3 female, age = 24 ± 1 years, duration = 2.5 h). Parades had alternating phases of motionless standing and marching. Pre-parades, baseline cardiovascular parameters (systolic arterial pressure [SAP] and heart rate [HR]), anthropometric measures, urinary sodium, anxiety and parade perspectives were collected. Sa

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a challenge for our society due to the post-acute sequelae of the disease. Persistent symptoms and long-term multiorgan complications, known as post-acute COVID-19 syndrome, can occur beyond 4 weeks from the onset of the COVID-19 infection. Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is considered a variety of dysautonomia, which is characterized by chronic symptoms that occur with standing and a sustained increase in heart rate, without orthostatic hypotension. POTS can lead to debilitating symptoms, significant disability, and impaired quality of life. I

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) often involves autonomic dysfunction, most notably impaired baroreflex sensitivity (BRS), which disrupts cardiovascular homeostasis and contributes to orthostatic hypotension (OH). Pharmacological and invasive treatments, including deep brain stimulation, have yielded inconsistent benefits and carry procedural risks, highlighting the need for safer, more accessible alternatives. In this systematic review, we evaluated non-invasive interventions-spanning somatosensory stimulation, exercise modalities, thermal therapies, and positional strategies-aimed at imp

In this paper the cardiac actions of adenosine, as well as its therapeutic and diagnostic applications are reviewed. Adenosine has been demonstrated to be useful in the assessment of coronary artery disease in conjunction with perfusion SPECT scintigraphy, PET imaging and two-dimensional echocardiography. The reported sensitivities and specificities of adenosine in these settings are high and similar to those of imaging after exercise or dipyridamole induced coronary hyperemia. Minor side effects are commonly associated with adenosine infusion, however they are transient, generally well tolera

The development of orthostatic hypotension and instability immediately after return from spaceflight has been a significant operational problem to astronauts for more than four decades. Significant reductions in stroke volume and peripheral vascular resistance contribute to ineffective maintenance of systemic arterial blood pressure during standing after spaceflight despite compensatory elevations in heart rate. The primary mechanism underlying reduced stroke volume appears to be a reduction in preload associated with reduced circulating blood volume, although cardiac atrophy might also contri
