Self-Reported Motor and Nonmotor Symptoms, Prodromal Parkinson's Disease Probability, and Incident Parkinson's Disease in US Farmers.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have assessed motor and nonmotor symptoms and the prodromal probability of Parkinson's disease (PD) among farming populations. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to assess self-reported nonmotor and motor symptoms and the prodromal PD probability in relation to incident PD among US farmers. METHODS: The study included 16,059 farmers (aged 65.6 ± 10.8 years) from the Agricultural Health Study, with a median of 6.2 years of follow-up. We assessed associations using multivariable logistic regression and presented odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). RESULTS: At basel

Clinical characteristic of prodromal symptoms between bipolar I and II disorder among Chinese patients: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to identify the clinical characteristic of prodromal symptoms in Chinese patients with bipolar disorder (BD), prior to the first affective episode. It further aimed to characterize the prodromal traits between bipolar disorder type I (BD-I) and type II (BD-II). METHODS: 120 individuals with BD-I (n = 92) and BD- II (n = 28) were recruited to the study. Semi-structured interviews were then administered to evaluate prodromal symptoms in patients, within 3 years of BD onset, by using the Bipolar Prodrome Symptom Scale-Retrospective (BPSS-R). RESULTS: In the prodroma

[REM sleep behavior disorder as a prodromal stage of α-synucleinopathies: symptoms, epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis and therapy].

Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is defined as a parasomnia characterized by loss of REM sleep-associated atonia and the presence of motor activity during dreaming typically presenting with an aggressive dream content. Epidemiological data on the prevalence of RBD are insufficient but it can be idiopathic or symptomatic. A video-audio polysomnography is essential for diagnosis. Clonazepam and melatonin are available as pharmaceutical treatment. Recent studies demonstrated that individuals suffering from idiopathic RBD carry a high specific risk (up to 80 %) for developing

Translation, validation, predictive analysis of the Italian version of the McSweeney Acute and Prodromal Myocardial Infarction Symptom Survey and symptom cluster characterization in women.

BACKGROUND: Nurses are the touch point for different aspects of patient care, particularly in identifying early prodromal symptoms of acute myocardial infarction in women. Although there is increasing awareness of women-specific symptoms like fatigue, anxiety, and sleep disturbances, acute myocardial infarction is frequently underdiagnosed or recognized too late in women. Instruments such as the McSweeney Acute and Prodromal Myocardial Infarction Symptom Survey have demonstrated effectiveness in identifying these prodromal symptoms. However, no validated Italian tool exists to assess prodromal

Disseminated varicella-zoster virus infection with gastrointestinal prodromal symptoms during daratumumab therapy for relapsed and refractory multiple myeloma.

Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) reactivation is a recognized complication in patients with multiple myeloma, particularly during treatment-associated immunosuppression. Although disseminated VZV infection is uncommon, delayed diagnosis may result in life-threatening disease. We report a Japanese woman in her 70s with relapsed and refractory multiple myeloma who developed anorexia, vomiting, and fever before the appearance of disseminated vesicular eruptions during daratumumab-based therapy. Laboratory findings showed cytopenia, marked liver dysfunction, and hypogammaglobulinemia. Disseminated VZV

Depressive symptoms in prodromal Huntington's Disease correlate with Stroop-interference related functional connectivity in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex.

Huntington's Disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative disorder caused by a cytosine-adenine-guanine (CAG) triplet repeat-expansion in the Huntingtin (HTT) gene. Diagnosis of HD is classically defined by the presence of motor symptoms; however, cognitive and depressive symptoms frequently precede motor manifestations, and may occur early in the prodromal phase. There are sparse data so far on functional brain correlates of depressive symptoms in prodromal HD. A Stroop color-naming test was administered to 32 subjects in the prodromal phase of HD and 52 expansion-negative controls while performing fu

Identification of Neuropsychiatric Symptoms in Preclinical and Prodromal Stages in Dementias: Development of a Screening Test for Mild Behavioral Impairment.

UNLABELLED: The study investigates the roles of bacterial virulence factors in the development of mycotic aneurysms and explores the potential of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as a therapeutic intervention. Mycotic aneurysms are different from degenerative ones in that they result from bacterial infections, and eradication or control of their virulence factors is influenced by bacteria. An early diagnosis with prompt treatment is needed in order to save lives since this type of aneurysm carries a high mortality rate associated with it. Imaging techniques include computed tomography (CT), positr

Sequencing of symptom emergence in anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, and purging disorder and relations of prodromal symptoms to future onset of these disorders.

The objective of this study was to characterize the temporal sequencing of symptom emergence for anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), binge eating disorder (BED), and purging disorder (PD), as well as to test whether prodromal symptoms increase risk for future onset of each type of eating disorder and compare the predictive effects to those of established risk factors. Data from four prevention trials that targeted high-risk young women with body image concerns (N = 1,952; Mage = 19.7, SD = 5.7) and collected annual diagnostic interview data over 3-year follow-up were combined to addre

A case presenting with a major depressive episode with palilalia and difficulty opening eyes as prodromal symptoms of progressive supranuclear palsy.

BACKGROUND: Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a neurodegenerative disease and patients with PSP frequently experience depression. However, there have been few reports of patients with major depressive disorder as an antecedent diagnosis of PSP. Here, we report a case who presented with a major depressive episode with palilalia and difficulty in opening his eyes as prodromal symptoms of PSP. CASE PRESENTATION: A Japanese man developed his first major depressive episode at the age of 75 years. At 76 years old, the patient developed palilalia and difficulty in opening his eyes, which worse

Somatic Symptom Disorder as a Prodrome of Alzheimer Disease and Successful Treatment of Pain and Agitation With Electroconvulsive Therapy: A Case Report.

Neuropsychiatric symptoms in dementia can be heterogeneous and hard to treat, though electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is becoming more widely accepted as a viable treatment option. Here, we describe a patient with Alzheimer disease (AD) who developed Somatic Symptom Disorder as a prodrome to cognitive and functional decline, though atypical, primary affective disorder in AD was also on the differential. This patient further developed debilitating anxiety and agitation that was refractory to multiple behavioral and pharmacological interventions. ECT was able to treat the patient's neuropsychiatr

The role of contributing factors, triggers, and prodromal symptoms in the etiological classification of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest; A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Current Utstein etiological classifications for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) are heterogenous and inaccurate when compared with robust sources. This heterogeneity may influence reporting incidence and outcomes and patient enrollment in observational studies and clinical trials. Circumstance-related factors may contribute to cardiac arrest; however, the role of these factors in improving the etiological classification of OHCA is unknown. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review was proposed to explore current evidence to identify the role of contributing factors, triggers, and prodr
