[Problem of adaptation of patients with the syndrome of early childhood autism].

Sixty-seven children with early childhood autism received therapeutic and corrective treatment in a day-time clinic. In 37 cases socialization of children proved possible, and following treatment, they were transferred to specialized, logopedic, and general kindergartens and schools. The authors advocate the advisability of setting up day-time clinics in the framework of childhood psychiatric hospitals and of organization of separate groups for children with early childhood autism in the framework of specialized kindergartens.

[Prevalence and follow-up of psychiatric diseases in internal medicine departments].

While several surveys have shown that psychiatric disorders are common in non-psychiatric hospital departments, information on the course of psychiatric morbidity during the hospital stay is still lacking. Therefore, in two medical hospital departments in Austria we investigated the course of illness in 265 patients staying in the hospital for more than four weeks. Patients were interviewed using the Clinical Interview Schedule. At admission, prevalence of all psychiatric disorders was 46.0%. During the four weeks after admission, mentally well were discharged from hospital more frequently tha

Interdisciplinary team for the treatment of eating disorders.

Eating disorders are pathologies with a complex, multifactorial etiopathogenesis. Their treatment requires an interdisciplinary team. This paper discusses some characteristics and the most common difficulties encountered by such a team (multiple transfers, concealed alliances, role inversion, dissociation). Since their task that is carried out with patients in a critical situation and conflicting families, the team members are exposed to stressing conditions (illustrated by their dreams), and faced with possibilities of withdrawal and/or burn-out.

SPIN-IT and Quit It: A Nurse-Driven Protocol to Improve Inpatient Interventions for Tobacco Use Disorder [Formula: see text].

IntroductionTobacco smoking remains a leading cause of preventable disease and death in the U.S., with a high prevalence among individuals with mental health disorders (MHD). Despite regulatory efforts to increase tobacco use disorder (TUD) treatment in psychiatric inpatient units (an ideal setting), compliance of offering and using these interventions remains suboptimal.AimsThis project aimed to examine the effectiveness of a nurse-driven protocol, Smoking treatment Protocol for Inpatients via Nurse-driven Interventions & Teaching (SPIN-IT), on improving compliance with evidence-based TUD tre

"Just (Don't) do It?" Stakeholder Perspectives on Physical Activity Interventions in Adult Acute Mental Health Wards: A Qualitative Thematic Analysis.

Adult acute mental health wards operate under sustained pressure, characterised by high patient acuity, workforce shortages and a focus on risk management that can limit opportunities for therapeutic engagement. Although physical activity is increasingly recognised as beneficial for mental and physical health, there remains limited evidence to guide its implementation within acute inpatient settings. The purpose of this study was to generate practice-relevant insights to inform the design and implementation of feasible physical activity interventions in adult acute mental health wards. A quali

Perspectives and Experiences of People Receiving Care on a De-escalation Intervention to Reduce Restrictive Practices in Acute Mental Health Units.

Interventions aimed at reducing restrictive practices are also designed to enhance the service experience in acute mental health units. However, people with experience of coercive engagement with these services are seldom involved as active contributors in evaluative research on interventions to reduce restrictive practices. With the meaningful involvement of lived experience practitioners, this research was aimed at examining care recipients' service experiences and perspectives on nurses' therapeutic responses during the implementation of a de-escalation intervention in three adult inpatient

The cost of preventing stigma by hospitalizing soldiers in a general hospital instead of a psychiatric hospital.

Hospitalization costs are lower in psychiatric hospitals than in psychiatric departments of general hospitals. However, soldiers hospitalized in psychiatric hospitals are subject to the stigma associated with mental illness. The goal of this study was to examine the financial costs of preventing such stigma by hospitalizing soldiers in psychiatric departments of general hospitals, rather than less expensive psychiatric hospitals. Another goal was to find ways to reduce hospitalization costs, taking into consideration the consequences of the stigma for patients and their families. Costs, medica

Substance use and violence among psychiatric inpatients.

Nursing staff on psychiatric wards often attribute patient violence and aggression to substance use. This study examined incidents of alcohol and illicit drug use among acute psychiatric inpatients and associations between substance use and violence or other forms of aggression. A sample of 522 adult psychiatric inpatients was recruited from 84 acute psychiatric wards in England. Data were collected from nursing and medical records for the first 2 weeks of admission. Only a small proportion of the sample was reported to have used or been under the influence of alcohol (5%) or drugs (3%). There

Modifiable factors affecting inpatient violence in an acute child and adolescent psychiatric unit: A 16-year retrospective study.

Violent incidents in acute inpatient units for children and adolescents are a major and persistent problem. The demographic, clinical, and modifiable (environmental-organizational) risk factors that affect inpatient violence in an Acute Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Unit were investigated via a retrospective study. Data were collected from nursing and medical reports and the unit's census and included 100 days per year for 16 years. Incidents of violence and assault types were recorded, and variables such as the diagnostic category of assailants, total number of patients, and staffing facto

Mental handicap, psychosis and thyrotoxicosis: a demonstration of the usefulness of an integrated community and hospital service.

A case is described of a moderately mentally handicapped woman referred to the local community mental handicap team with a diagnosis of bipolar affective disorder--manic phase. There was a possible association between her manic state and hyperthyroidism. Assessment and management were complicated by the development of neuroleptic-induced catatonia. The desirability of access to a local general psychiatric unit is discussed.

Geriatric referrals to a psychiatric consultation-liaison service.

Geriatric patients constitute a significant proportion of referrals to a psychiatric consultation-liaison service, accounting for 29% of referrals in the present study. Organic mental disorders, the most common psychiatric diagnosis, were identified in 51% of geriatric referrals. The next most common psychiatric conditions were affective disorders and adjustment disorders, each of which were diagnosed in 17% of geriatric referrals. Transfers to in-patient psychiatry were unusual and the most common recommendations were for psychotropic medications, further medical investigations, and for psych

Use of restraint in a general hospital psychiatric unit in Japan.

Few analyses have been carried out in Japan concerning factors contributing to physical restraint of patients. We compared demographic data for 241 inpatients who were restrained during a 4-year period with data for 1093 inpatients who were not restrained in a general hospital psychiatric unit in Japan. Increased likelihood of restraint use was associated with older age, male gender, off-hours admission, involuntary hospitalization, transfer from other departments of the hospital, frequent hospitalization, absence of previous treatment, physical complications, history of suicide attempts, orga
