Advancing the network theory of mental disorders: A computational model of panic disorder.

The network theory of psychopathology posits that mental disorders are systems of mutually reinforcing symptoms. This framework has proven highly generative but does not specify precisely how any specific mental disorder operates as such a system. Cognitive behavioral theories of mental disorders provide considerable insight into how these systems may operate. However, the development of cognitive behavioral theories has itself been stagnant in recent years. In this article, we advance both theoretical frameworks by developing a network theory of panic disorder rooted in cognitive behavioral t

'Nonspecific' rather than 'nonassociative' pathways to phobias: a commentary on Poulton and Menzies.

This commentary attempts to clarify the nature of contemporary associative accounts of phobias, and to describe how they might contribute to the explanation of the diversity of phobic aetiologies. It is argued that conditioning-equivalent associations underpin all phobic conditions, and that the role of experimental psychopathology research is to determine how these associations are acquired. The commentary then proceeds to discuss some of the theoretical problems with the nonassociative account of phobias as it is currently described by Poulton and Menzies, and to suggest that some interpreta

Neither dichotomies nor dualisms; simply genesis.

Our starting point is an article by Uchoa Angela Branco published in 2009 in Integrative Psychological and Behavioral Sciences (vol. 43, pp. 350-355) and titled "Why Dichotomies can be Misleading while Dualities Fit the Analysis of Complex Phenomena". She criticizes the dualist uses of the distinction between subject and object, or between subjectivist and objectivist perspectives. However we subscribe to the criticism, we argue that some kind of distinction between objectual and subjectual realities is neccesary. Our argument is grounded on the classic constructivist Psychology, especially th

Artificial a theoretical model of triggered displaced aggression.

A tit-for-tat matching rule (Axelrod, 1984) describes much interpersonal behavior. Yet, in daily life a retaliatory aggressive response to a trivially mild provocation often inappropriately exceeds that expected from the matching rule. The concept of triggered displaced aggression can explain these exceptions to the matching principle. Building from the Cognitive Neoassociationistic model of aggressive behavior (Berkowitz, 1989, 1990, 1993), we developed a theoretical framework of social and personality factors that moderate and mediate the disjunctively escalated retaliation that can result f

Initiating Analysis.

Psychoanalysis is defined in this paper as a process that initiates in the analyst's mind with the framing of the patient's material in terms of transference and resistance. Once the analyst is able to do this, a first level of transformation of experience is effectuated that then must be consummated through interpretation to the patient of what is occurring in their mind as it is lived out in the experience with the analyst. For this author, Bion's model of container-contained complements Freud's transference and resistance model; it also offers an example to his thesis that only within a cle

Actual Challenges and Future Horizons of Cultural Psychology.

We comment on Aaro Toomela's article Toomela & Quo Vadis, (Integrative Psychological and Behavioral Science 59:75, (2025), in which the author proposes using Piotr Anokhin's model of self-regulating system as a general theoretical basis for the development of cultural psychology. In light of self-regulating systems theory living systems, and social objects appear capable of maintaining homeostasis through accommodation in the context of environmental changes thanks to the predictability of environmental changes for the system. As scientific knowledge advances, great ideas formulated in the pas

Falsification and experimental psychology: examples from face perception.

The present article examines the relationships between the falsification approach as outlined in Popper (1995) and the methodological basis of experimental psychology. In view of this, I will offer suggestions that may reduce somewhat the severity of the following two problems that were raised against Popper approach: The "Duhem problem", and "contradictory-findings disregard", i.e., the fact that scientists tend to ignore findings that disconfirm their theory. These suggestions are based on the development of the "temporary closed explanatory domain" (TCED) model, which describes how the rese

Toward a Differentiated Conceptualization of Extreme Experiences and Their Relevance To Integrative Mental Health Theory.

Extreme experiences lie at the edges of human existence-and precisely for that reason, they demand the attention of psychology and psychotherapy science. However, in this context, extremes are often interpreted as pathological deviations from an assumed norm. This article argues for a conceptual re-evaluation: extremes should not be understood primarily as symptomatic distortion or disorders, but as potentially meaningful states that are relevant to psychological development. Building on historical, theoretical, and empirical perspectives, an integrative framework model is proposed that analyz

Before the "boom": Readings and uses of Vygotsky in Argentina (1935-1974).

This article analyzes, from the standpoint of reception studies and transnational history, the different ways Lev S. Vygotsky's published work in Spanish, English, and Russian was read, discussed, and used in Argentina from 1935 to 1974. This "early" reception primarily involved 2 groups: writers affiliated with the Argentine Communist Party, and individuals without political affiliations who engaged in discussion with Communists. The article argues that Communism, as a cultural tradition and political organization, played a key role in the reception and diffusion of Vygotsky's work. The ideas

Why dichotomies can be misleading while dualities fit the analysis of complex phenomena.

Humans' tendency to classify and categorize is definitely overspread, but it can be misleading at all fields, including epistemology, ontology, theory, and analysis of scientific knowledge construction itself. Sanchez and Loredo (IPBS: Integrative Psychological & Behavioral Science 43:4, 2009-DOI 10.1007/s12124-009-9091-1) in their article on classification of contemporary constructivists fall exactly into such pitfall- even as their effort to make sense of many outstanding theorists is impressive and inriguing. A further analysis, however, points at the theoretical trap posed by such endeavor

Fears born and bred: toward a more inclusive theory of fear acquisition.

Alleged differences between associative and non-associative perspectives are sometimes more apparent than real. The non-associative model describes a pathway to fear that is complementary to associative pathways. It does not seek to usurp conditioning models as applied to evolutionary-neutral fear. We discuss vexing definitional issues surrounding what qualifies as a conditioning event and what characterises the non-associative pathway. Genetic findings are shown to be consistent with the non-associative model of fear. Following discussion of the relation between stress-diathesis models and th

Being oneself.

This paper discusses the difference between self-identification and the self/other differentiation. Self-identification relies on the congruence of self-generated movements and their expected consequences, i.e., on the temporal correlation between the set of signals (command signals, sensory reafferences) that are related to that movement. Only the origin of the movement (i.e., whether it originates from the self or not), not its destination or its goal, is relevant for self-identification. Self/other differentiation requires both that one can understand the actions others perform, and that on

Behaviour change techniques and theory use in healthcare professional-delivered infant feeding interventions to prevent childhood obesity: a systematic review.

The conceptual basis of early childhood feeding interventions for obesity prevention is poorly understood. The aim of this systematic review is to characterise these interventions' use of behaviour change techniques (BCTs) and psychological theory, focusing on interventions delivered by healthcare professionals for children ≤ 2 years. We searched seven electronic databases from inception to January 2019 and identified 12 trials. BCTs and theory use were identified using the Behaviour Change Technique Taxonomy v1 and the Theory Coding Scheme respectively. Interventions used 19 BCTs, most common

"All You Need is Holt"-is the socio-cultural phenomenon a problem for a neorealist ecological psychology?

The aim of this paper is to discuss Charles's (2011) attempt to turn E.B. Holt's theoretical approach into the only possible bridge to connect Gibsonian ecological psychology with social psychology. Criticism of Charles's claims is carried out at four different conceptual levels: historiographical, logico-epistemological, methodological, and theoretical. From this critical perspective, Charles's resort to Holt's ideas is viewed as an effort to legitimate Charles's own line of work. Moreover, far from being this the only possible approach to the subject, many other rich alternatives to the appl

On nonassociative fear emergence.

Poulton and Menzies have articulated a nonassociative alternative to traditional conditioning theories of phobia emergence. Prompted by their essay, I address several issues including controversies about what counts as a conditioning event, difficulties establishing whether a fear functioned as an adaptation throughout evolutionary history, hazards of attempting to recover conditioning events in the histories of patients, and problems with the contingency view of associative learning.

Experiences of activity and causality in schizophrenia: when predictive deficits lead to a retrospective over-binding.

In this paper I discuss an intriguing and relatively little studied symptomatic expression of schizophrenia known as experiences of activity in which patients form the delusion that they can control some external events by the sole means of their mind. I argue that experiences of activity result from patients being prone to aberrantly infer causal relations between unrelated events in a retrospective way owing to widespread predictive deficits. Moreover, I suggest that such deficits may, in addition, lead to an aberrant intentional binding effect i.e., the subjective compression of the tempora

Rewind, Replay, Rebound - Reflections on Toomela's Call for a Unified Theory of the Psyche Revisiting Vygotsky, Anokhin, and Luria.

Toomela (2025) have provided a useful constructive critique of why Cultural Psychology has not yet succeeded in becoming a "general human psychology". This commentary includes a summary of the points Aaro Toomela states in his article and moves further into the discussion and balance between understanding Cultural Psychology as a system, in terms of Luria, Vygotsky and Anokin, as Toomela suggests, and suggesting importance of "bricoleurs" in terms of Smedslund (2012) in flexible and improvising manners. The main content of Aaro Toomela´s article includes (1) clear definitions on culture and ps

Thinking as Relational Process and Pattern in Semiotic Cultural Psychology.

This study challenges traditional psychological notions of thinking as a static cognitive trait. Instead, we construe enduring thinking patterns to emerge persistently in a semiotic-relational process across three intertwined cultural-psychological lenses: worldviews (macro-level), mindsets (meso-level), and thinking styles (micro-level). The overarching field of Semiotic Cultural Psychology theory (SCPT) has been developed to focus on the embodied micro-mechanisms that bridge the intra- and interpsychological levels of reality through semiotic dynamics. Thinking as a semiotic relational proce
