Relations of Shared and Unique Components of Personality and Psychosocial Functioning to Depressive Symptoms.

Consistent with theories of depression, several personality (e.g., high neuroticism, low extraversion) and psychosocial (e.g., interpersonal problems, cognitive content) variables predict depressive symptoms substantively. In this extended replication, we clarified whether 13 theoretically relevant personality and psychosocial variables were unique versus overlapping predictors of symptoms among 351 adult outpatients with recurrent major depressive disorder who received acute-phase cognitive therapy (CT). Using factor analysis and regression methods, we partitioned the measures' variance into

Psychosocial functioning in Dutch foster children: The relationship with child, family, and placement characteristics.

Foster care is the preferred alternative for out-of-home care, but not necessarily beneficial for foster children's psychosocial functioning. This dilemma leaves researchers with a challenge to find out more about the factors related to foster children's social and emotional functioning. In a sample of 446 Dutch foster children we examined the extent to which three clusters of characteristics, those akin to the foster child, the foster family, or foster placement, were related to foster children's functioning at the time of research. Multivariate three-step hierarchical regression analyses wer

Maternal relationship security as a moderator of home visiting impacts on maternal psychosocial functioning.

There is variability in home visiting program impacts on the outcomes achieved by high risk families. An understanding of how effects vary among families is important for refining service targeting and content. The current study assessed whether and how maternal attributes, including relationship security, moderate short- and long-term home visiting impacts on maternal psychosocial functioning. In this multisite RCT of home visiting in a population-based, ethnically-diverse sample of families at risk for maltreatment of their newborns (n = 643), families were randomly assigned to home visited

Gender differences in risk factors and psychosocial functioning in children with psychogenic nonepileptic seizures.

OBJECTIVE: Female predominance is evident in childhood-onset psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES). Understanding gender-specific vulnerability to PNES may provide a unique insight into its cause and management. We aimed to investigate gender differences in demographic characteristics, triggering factors and psychosocial functioning in children and youth with PNES. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients who were evaluated in the PNES clinic at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta from July 2019 to March 2020 and completed questionnaires to assess adverse life events, psychosocial functi

Psychosocial functioning of the patient with spinal cord and whiplash injury: A case report.

Whiplash is a soft tissue injury of the cervical spine that is generally caused by trauma from a motor vehicle accident or gunshot. It is associated with a wide range of clinical symptoms, including neck pain and stiffness, pain and restricted movement in the upper arms. We report the manifestations of this trauma within the beliefs and psychological functioning based on a comprehensive psychological assessment that include a review of hospital records, clinical examinations, a structured clinical interview, an inventory of psychosocial function, and a post-traumatic maladaptive belief scale.

Persistent negative symptoms in recent-onset psychosis: Relationship to treatment response and psychosocial functioning.

Negative symptoms are associated with poor clinical and psychosocial outcome in schizophrenia. Their prevalence and identification in first-episode patients remains controversial. In a large cohort of patients in the early stage of schizophrenia, schizophreniform or schizoaffective disorder, we investigated, over the different phases of the OPTiMiSE trial (baseline, 4, 10 and 22 weeks of treatment), the prevalence of negative symptoms of moderate severity, unconfounded by depression and extrapyramidal symptoms at baseline. Moreover, we assessed symptomatic remission, attrition rate and psychos

Multiple trauma exposure and psychosocial functioning in Singaporean children in out-of-home care.

OBJECTIVE: Children in out-of-home care are often exposed to chronic, interpersonal traumas such as abuse and domestic violence. Exposure to more than 1 interpersonal trauma is associated with functional impairments, mental health symptoms, and risk behaviors. Despite the importance of studying trauma in this vulnerable population, very few studies have investigated trauma exposure among children and youth in out-of-home care in Asia. This is the first study to examine the effects of multiple interpersonal trauma exposure in a large sample of children in out-of-home care in Singapore. METHOD:

Neighborhood socioeconomic conditions are associated with psychosocial functioning in older black and white adults.

We examined neighborhood socioeconomic status (NSES) in relation to depressive symptoms, perceived stress, and hostility in 5770 community-dwelling older black and white adults (mean age=73 years; 62% female) from 3 contiguous neighborhoods covering 82 census block groups in Chicago, IL. NSES was an average of z-scores of four Census 2000 block-group variables: % public assistance, % households earning <$25,000 annually, % with >college degree, and % owner-occupied dwellings valued >$200,000. NSES was inversely related to hostility (beta=-0.305), stress (beta=-0.333), and depressive symptoms (
